Description of drill:
Structural Damage: Following points discussed.
Structural Failure may occur due to:
1.The ship has been in collision.
2.The ship has grounded.
3.Inherent or Latent Flaw in the construction of vessel
4. The ship has suffered any other similar event.

Where pollution or risk of pollution is deemed to exist then the ‘SOPEP’ or ‘USCG
NON-TANK VRP’ will be initiated by the vessel.

Reference has to be made to the following documents and plans:

1) Damage Stability Booklet
2) Damage Stability Plan
3) Ship Emergency Response Service ( SERS) reporting documents
4) Trim and Stability Booklet
5) Sounding Tables

Materials Required and their Location

1.On Bridge:
•Aldis lamp.
•Portable radio transceivers.
•Hand lead line.
2.In hospital
•Stretchers.
3.Steering gear
•Emergency use timber
5.Ship’s office
•Sounding tape

Command Team would:

1.Muster point - on bridge

2.Refer to contingency plans for above for initial actions.
3.Display NUC/aground lights and shapes.
4.Transmit distress/urgency alert and distress/urgency message depending upon severity
of water ingress, space flooded (in case engine room is flooded and bilge pumps cannot
cope up with rate of water ingress, transmit distress message).
5.Send SERS report and prepare information for second report.
6.Initiate SOPEP / USCG non-tank vessel plan and transmit ‘initial notification’ to
nearest coastal state and the management. Inform dpa. (note that initial notification must
be sent for actual or probable discharge of oil).
7.Send ‘supplementary report’ to the company as soon as details are available and a
proper assessment has been done.
8.Maintain log of events.
Emergency Team would:

1.Muster in out side EHQ in full working gear with immersion suit & lifejacket.
2.Check if any high level alarms have been activated. Take soundings of all cargo hold
bilges, WBT’s and void spaces.
3.Assess the severity of flooding and rate.
4.Submit SERS casualty report to command team.
5.Commence pumping out flooded hold, water ballast tank or void space.
6.Prepare damage control timber for stopping/reducing the water ingress as per the
situation.
7.Consider heeling the vessel to one side to reduce water ingress. (caution: be aware of
initial gm and free surface effects due to flooding)
8.Report all activities to the command team.

Back Up team would:

1.Muster out side EHQ in full working gear with immersion suit & lifejacket.
2.Prepare both lifeboats for possibility of abandoning ship.
3.Assist emergency team in damage/flooding control.
4.Check over side regularly for any sign of oil pollution and report the same to command
team.

Engine Room Team would:

1.Muster in out side EHQ in full working gear with immersion suit & lifejacket.
2.Check if any high level alarm has been activated.
3.Take soundings of all tanks, bilges, voids and cofferdams within engine room.
4.If engine room is flooding, assess the severity and rate of flooding.
5.Commence pumping out bilges if they are getting flooded.
6.In case rate of flooding exceeds pumping out rate and if water level has risen to
generator platform, stop generators and start emergency generator. Evacuate engine
room.
7.Report all actions / activity to command team.

2. Duration of drill (Time) :20 Mins

3. Shortfalls: Nil

4. Reviews Lessons Learned: All crew emphasized on quick response which is required
in this emergency in their respective teams.
