Comment la littérature et l'art peut refléter et critiquer la société

contemporaine

how can art and litterature reflect and criticize the

contemporary society ?

In the today society we've got a lot of disparity (inégalités)

between differents social classes or gender inequality
in connection with recent events , people are disagree
with the government , they convey the idea that leaders
around the world are not effective in their roles we can
see this with the strike abot the retirement , in short
there is some point in the society that need to be
highlighted .
And one of the most popular and safe way to denounce
things is to write about it . Take a statement and merge it
into a story , with an aim of overstate (exagerer) to make
it obvious in term of litterature La littérature engagée

it is in this idea i chose my documents , works that carry

a message .

First example is the handmaid's tale , a book writtten by

Margaret Atwood in 1985 . its a dystopian novel which
takes place in the republic of gilead in USA under a
totalitarian regime . The book introduce to us the
character of Offred , a handmaid who is in charge of
giving birth for steril couple . We've got here a book which
explores themes of reproduction, female identity, power,
religion and resistance. It has become a classic of
feminist literature . Because at the times of writting this
book there was a general idea about the place of the
womens , always considered inferior to the male gender ,
a curent fight that a lot of woman lead.

To connect with the second document , “the death od the

autor” , the death of the autor is a 1967 essay by the
french litterary critic and theorist Roland Barthes .
To summarize the saying of the autor , there is a theory
about the fact that the autor i snot the only holder of the
meaning of his works . The interpretation of the works
depend on the historical and social context . They are the
reflect of the society in which they were written . They
convey the idea and the values of the peaple of that time
so the interpretation of the works , any litterature that it
ca be , evolves over time , reflecting the changes of the
societey and the outlook of the readers . The death of the
autor question the idea of a set meanings of the works
and highlight the asset role of the reader on the creation
of the signification . According to Roland Barthes , it is
the reader who gives meaning to the work more than the
author.

For example if we take a look at the sculpture of Damien

Hirst named The Physical Impossibility of Death in the
Mind of Someone Living the meanings of the works is not
that obvious as I said before , we must push our reflexion
a litle beyond . The official description of this art is « a
preserved tiger shark of 4,3 mèters submerged in
formaldehyde in a glass-panel display case. » according to
Damien Hirst the work is an exploration of themes of life,
death, mortality and impermanence . He is thinking that
his art should provoke reflections on life, death and the
human condition, and that his use of dead animals is a
way of reminding people that life is fragile and fleeting.
Nevretheless , this works sparked much debate and
criticism . Some peaple consider its like a genius work ,
some peaple are thinking that its mere (simple)
provocation , for the general opinion , it is a controversial
works which is introduce as a criticism of the
contemporary art market and the consumers society by
the fact that the tiger shark , this dangerous predator is
depict like an object , reducing his power .

The meanings can be countless (innombrable) and it

depends on the audience and the social context , maybe
in qome years or decade the mind of the people will
change and the fixed idea that this works is convey will
change a lot .

An important factor is also how the message is convey to

the audience . An art that touche young and old alike is
the music . For the last document ive chose the lyrics of
bob dylan's musics named “Blowin’ in the Wind”
this song is considered one of the anthem of the struggle
for civil right in USA , a protest song against
contemporary society . In the lyrics we can find retorical
question such as “how many roads must a man walk down
before call him a man ? “ or “ How many ears msut one
man have before can hear peaple cry ? “ which raise
question about injustice violence and racial dicrimination
lyrics also express a criticism of war , poverty and social
injustice . Its a call from dylan for a change in the society
by asking simple but deep questions that highlight the
contradiction and absurdity of the contemporary society
music is a way to express and talk to everyone beyond the
country .
CONCLUSION
In conclusion, art and literature have the power to reflect
and criticize contemporary society in a unique way.
Artists and writers can use their creativity to explore
complex social themes and offer a critical perspective on
the problems of our time. In addition, art and literature
can create empathy, stimulate debate and inspire positive
action in our society.
However, in order for art and literature to continue to play
an important role in criticism and reflection on
contemporary society, it is essential to support and
protect them from political and economic pressures. We
must continue to encourage artists and writers to use
their voices to drive social change, and we must commit
to making those voices heard to create a more just and
equitable society for all.

Œuvre intégrale : "The Handmaid's Tale" de Margaret Atwood
