LESSON PLAN IN Global Peace and Security

Grade 11

Learning Objectives:

 Students will define global peace and security.


 Students will identify the key threats to global peace and security.
 Students will analyze the role of international organizations in promoting peace and security.
 Students will propose solutions to address global security threats.

Materials:

 Whiteboard or projector
 Markers or pens
 Handout with key terms (peace, security, conflict, war, terrorism, international organizations)
 Worksheet on threats to global peace and security (see below)
 Access to the internet (optional)

Lesson Procedure:

Hour 1: Defining Peace and Security and Identifying Threats

1. Introduction (10 minutes):


o Begin by brainstorming with students what peace and security mean to them.
o Introduce the concept of global peace and security, emphasizing the
interconnectedness of the world.
2. Defining Key Terms (10 minutes):
o key terms (peace, security, conflict, war, terrorism, international organizations).
o Discuss the definitions of each term, ensuring students understand the difference
between peace and security.
3. Identifying Threats (20 minutes):
o Divide the class into small groups.
o Show a listing category of threats to global peace and security (e.g., war, terrorism,
poverty, climate change, cyber threats).
Categories:
War and Conflict (e.g., territorial disputes, civil wars, ethnic violence)
Terrorism (e.g., violent extremism, cyberterrorism)
Poverty and Inequality (e.g., resource scarcity, lack of access to education)
Climate Change (e.g., natural disasters, mass displacement)
Cyber Threats (e.g., hacking, cyberwarfare)
Other (list any additional threats students identify)

oInstruct each group to discuss specific examples within each category.


oEncourage students to consider how these threats are interconnected.
4. Class Discussion (15 minutes):
o Reunite the class and have each group share their findings.
o Facilitate a discussion about the most pressing threats and their potential
consequences.

Hour 2: The Role of International Organizations and Student Solutions

1. Review:
o Briefly review the discussion earlier on threats to global peace and security.
2. International Organizations:
o Introduce the concept of international organizations (IOs) and their role in promoting
peace and security.
o Provide examples of IOs such as the United Nations (UN), NATO, and the African
Union (AU).
o You can use the internet to show brief videos about the work of these organizations
(optional).
o
3. Student Solutions:
o Divide the class into small groups again.
o Challenge students to brainstorm solutions for addressing the most pressing threats
identified in (hour 1)
o Encourage them to consider the role of individuals, governments, and IOs in
implementing these solutions.
4. Class Presentations:

 Have each group present their proposed solutions to the class.

 Allow students to present their solutions in creative ways, such as drawings, short videos, or
role-playing scenarios.

Reflection:

1. Imagine you are a world leader. What specific actions would you take to address the
threat you identified earlier? Be creative and consider both national and international
solutions.
