Concepts of family
The family is the oldest institution in society. Also, it is the basic and most important unit in many
ways. The family is seen as the foundation fo society and the basis for all human relationships. Entire
civilizations have survived or disappeared on whether the family life was strong or weak. All of us
belong to a family whether we believe that pour father and mother, grandfather, grandmother,
brothers, sisters, uncles and aunts or friends. These people are our family.
Functions of the family
We have read earlier that the family is an institution which plays an important part in our life and our
society in general. It is our top-ranking social institution. It is, of all our social necessities, the most
vital.
If the family were to be swept away the world would be s place of regimentation, chaos, and solution.
Why? Because the family fulfills at least 3 vital functions. It provides sustenance and trains its
members in the act of surviving. The earliest group association teaching the art of social living.
The place where our culture is passed on from generation to generation.

That is only a small part of service given by a family to individual members. There are other
functions. For example, the family is closely related to social change. Ideas must develop there before
the community adopts them.

In this section, we shall be looking at some selected functions of the family. It must be emphasized
that all the functions included here are not common to or undertaken by all families.

Characteristics of effective parenting

Children learn what they live. The roles performed by the parent of the family are important, as are
those which they expect children to perform. The behaviour which parents how their children stay
with them for life of the children themselves who either behave the same way or make a conscience
decision to behave differently. It is important therefore, for parents to have the necessary skills to be a
good example for there children.

To be effective parents need to be able to fulfill all 4 functions f the family as a result meet the needs
of the family. However, providing for financial needs may prove difficulty for some parents at time,
e.g. during a recession or times of unemployment. The other functions are often seen as less important
although adults may have the time, they often do not have the skills or the ability to provide for the
emotional and psychological needs of family member; others do not see this important and considered
their job to be that of providing only for the most basic needs food, clothing, and shelter.
