AND SELF-ESTEEM

- Define as the shared patterns of
thoughts, beliefs, behavior, and
habits in both material and symbolic
realms.

•SELF-ESTEEM
- Is how much you appreciate and like
yourself.
- Is used to describe a person’s overall
sense of self worth or personal value
THE IMPACT OF CULTURE ON BODY IMAGE AND
SELF-ESTEEM

• Standards of beauty and appearance are the product of a

diverse mix of cultural and historical influences.
• Norms of beauty and appearance are tied to ideals of
appearance and hard work.
• It is widely recognized by social scientist that culture
influences us in forming our body image.

De Mello (2014) explains that our bodies

are not only biological but also cultural, we
shape and manipulate our bodies.
THE IMPORTANCE OF BEAUTY

•INNER BEAUTY
- Refers to the inner qualities of a
person

•EXTERNAL BEAUTY
- Physical characteristic of the person

In Demello’s (2014) “the importance

of beauty” likely delves beauty
impacts individuals and society.
THE IMPORTANCE OF BEAUTY
• The importance of BEAUTY is derived in the premise that it is
the face that we become aware of when we encounter
people.
• Both men and women, although women appear to be more
conscious of their beauty, taking extra effort, time and money
to enhance their appearance just to meet the beauty
standards that modern society seem to promote.
Conclusion
• BEAUTY or BEING BEAUTIFUL is a
concept that we automatically
attached to the body. The society’s
standards of beauty sometimes
contribute to the development of a
person’s unhealthy body image or
incapacitating beliefs.
