END-SEMESTER EXAMINATION, 2021

SESSION: 2021 (SPRING)
PROGRAMME: B. TECH.
Dept. Code: CH Course Code: 3310 Course Name: Process Dynamics & Control
FULL MARKS: 50 Duration of Examination: 02.00 hours

This question paper contains 01 page

All questions are compulsory
Figures at the right hand margin indicate marks.
All parts of the question should be answered at one place.
Linear, Log-log and Semi-log graph papers may be supplied.
Q.No. Questions Marks
1. Write short note on the followings. 3x8
(i) Non-interacting and inherently second order systems = 24
(ii) Tuning of controller
(iii) Inherently second order system
(iv) Pneumatic control valve
(v) Corner frequency, cross over frequency and response frequency
(vi) Ratio controller
(vii) Feed forward control system
(viii) Stable and unstable system

2. In a two tank mixing process (interacting type), the inlet concentration varies from 0 kg
salt/m3 to 1 kg salt/m3 according to a step change being the inlet flow rate constant at 3
m3/min. The holdup volume of each tank is 6 m3. At what time does the salt concentration in
the second tank reach 0.6 kg salt/m3? 06

3. A first order process with time constant of 2 min is controlled by a three-mode controller with
both integral time and derivative time set to 1min.
(i) Calculate damping factor of the closed system for proportional gain values 2 and 10.
(ii) Do damping factor and natural period of oscillation approach limiting values as
proportional gain increases, and if so, what are these values?
(iii) Determine the offset for a unit-step change in load if proportional gain is 2.
(iv) Sketch the response curve for a unit step change in load when proportional gain is 2.
(v) Determine the maximum value of output and the time at which it occurs. 12

4. Sketch the root loci for the system shown in the following figure. The gain K is assumed to be
positive. Comment on the overdamped behaviour of the system for small and very large
values of K and for medium values of K it is underdamped. What are these limiting values of
K. 08
