Lawn Bowls
In common with sports like golf, shooting, archery, etc, lawn bowling is a
ABSTRACTION target sport. Lawn bowling games take the form of singles, pairs, triples,
or fours according to the number of bowlers in each team. A game is
played on a rink, which is a demarcated strip of a bowling green. An end
begins when the first player lays a mat and delivers an unbiased jack,
which is the focal point for a head.

As there are different types of lawn bowling, the short mat bowling made
lawn bowling very famous. Short mat bowls can be played in hotels,
schools and colleges, social clubs, and even in village hills because of
their versatility. Short mat bowls are famous in such areas because there is
a space restriction and this sport is perfect for such a situation.

Equipment

● The Bowls or Balls

Lawn Bowling is played in sets and there are four balls in each set. Each
set is not only unique but also has its own special symbol which is etched
in the center circle on both sides. In lawn bowling, the game is played
with four balls. We can either call it as balls or bowls.

● In Lawn Bowling, the bowls are biased and these are not perfectly
round bowls. So, when a player rolls the bowl, it moves in a path
that is curved in nature. It means it curves when we roll the ball.
So this forces the player to roll his bowl in an outward direction
with an angle to reach the target.

● Lawn Bowling is much like alley bowling where the players or the
bowlers roll the ball towards a target or a goal. In lawn bowling,
the target is a small white ball, whose size is like a billiard ball
and is known as ‘jack’. The points are awarded to the player who
can locate his ball as near as the jack. This is the main aim of the
game as to roll the bowl and get as close to the jack as possible.

Types of Delivery

1. Draw − In this type of delivery, the ball is rolled to a specific

location or position by trying to avoid any disturbance to the balls
already in the head.

2. Forehand Draw − This is normally executed by the right-handed
bowler. This delivery is called as finger peg delivery which is
initially aimed to the right of the jack and when it rolls it curves
towards its left. This shot is very tricky and widely used in the
game.

3. Backhand Draw − This type of delivery is simply the opposite of
forehand delivery. It is widely executed by the left-handers. Its
other name is thumb peg delivery. The same bowler can also bowl
it from their right hand. Here the ball, after being rolled is curved
towards the right direction, while aiming toward the left of the
jack.

Basic Tactical Concepts

● Establishing the Head

Tactics is an element of all sports and games. The use of tactical skill in
the course of play is neither unfair nor poor sportsmanship. It mainly
involves the exercise of common sense and the avoidance of poor
decisions.

● Team Tactics

When a club or players themselves form a team, it should be the most

competitive team possible. This involves the teaming of players who not
only will demand 100% of themselves, but also will help each other to
produce a 100% effort.

● Game Planning Basics

Lawn bowling is a coactive sport where teams play games by taking turns,
rather than an interactive sport like hockey where all members of
opposing teams are continuously engaged.

Fitness Components

You need to have good:

● Mental Skills - In lawn bowls the key to improving your game is

to train your mind and emotions equally as well as you train your
physical body. This is mental toughness and means changing the
way you think and react to your outer and inner senses as follows •
Externally: controlling your external senses such as what you see,
hear, feel, taste, and smell,
Internally: controlling your inner imagination from forming
mental images or concepts of what is not present to the senses
such as visualizing what’s not occurring, misinterpreting what is
being said, internal feelings such as shock and fear, inner feelings
of hunger, smell and taste.

● Coordination - This means having mental and physical

coordination with muscular atonement and strength to perform the
required amount of delivery shots throughout the event.

● Balance - What lawn bowlers need, increasingly as they get older,

is improved balance. Most delivery motions involve stepping
forward with the advancing foot and a brief balancing on the
anchor foot. Brief as this is, a partial loss of balance by your entire
the body will cause deviations from the desired line and weight for
your shot.

How to Play Lawn Bowls?

To learn the basics, here’s a short clip about the basics of Lawn Bowls. A
YouTube Video from Lawn Bowls Auckland.

Procedures:

● The first thing is to hold the ball strongly in your hands.

● Make sure you feel the bowl and have an idea of which side the
bowl is biased.
● Remember the goal is to get the bowl as close as possible to the
jack.
● You also need to position your middle finger on the edge of the
bowl for gripping purposes.
● The standing position you adopt also plays a crucial role. Make a
point of standing in a perfect position while your shoulders should
be square.
9

Rolling the Bowl

● As you throw the bowl, make a point of stepping close to the

throw line. Then bend your legs and roll the ball. If you need
additional stability, you can lean your free arm against your leg.
● It’s important to pay close attention to what you’re doing since
every part of the body gets involved.
● However, the idea is to get maximum stability so that scoring will
also be easy.
● To keep the bowl stable on each side, use your index finger and
thumb.

Direction: The teacher will group the students into two. Then the
teacher will give each group three balls. The goal of the students is to
aim closer to the “jack”. The group with balls closer to the jack will
win the game.
I. Follow the steps or procedures on how to play Lawn Balls and
apply the tactical skills and fitness components while playing the
game.
APPLICATION

Direction: The students will jot down one tactical skill they want to
improve in a game they play on a sheet of paper: 2 to 3 students will share
their goals with the class at the next meeting, briefly explaining why they
chose those skills.
ASSIGNMENT
10

Direction: The teacher will call for one student to read a quotation from
John F. Kennedy
