A SUCESSFUL LIFE BEYOND NUMBERS

Nowadays, how a student can do well in school has always been the basis of success.
Whenever students receive low grades, they are labeled as people who do not have a future in
life or people who do not care about their future, while students who received top marks are
often praised for their academic performance in school. Why are people defined by numbers?
Can everything in life be measured by numbers? Good grades are indeed important, but they
cannot show all the fantastic qualities a person has. There are far more matters that a person
could excel in other than academically. Some are blessed with a wide range of knowledge,
while some excel in various ways since there are more ranges of talents, abilities, and
capabilities a person can possess. Everyone is intelligent and capable in their own ways.

Most parents and instructors focus on making sure that their child or student can obtain
good grades in school. However, as stated in “A Medal Does Not Define You” by Hanna Victoria
Wabe, certificates and medals do not really matter in the vast majority of life. A student’s
scores will tell them how well they did on that exam, but they will not define them as a person.
Tests cannot tell what aspect or part a student once find difficult, but they could improve on it.
Examinations cannot describe how a person has been able to brighten up someone’s day. Tests
cannot tell them how amazing they indeed are. There is no way to test all of the beautiful
things that make a person great. The results in education do not define who someone is today
or in the future. Futures are created by the person’s determination, character, attitude, hard
work, and perseverance.

Moreover, a person’s potential and capabilities are not limited to being academically
competent. According to Howard Gardner’s Multiple Intelligence Theory, some people have
logical-mathematical intelligence, verbal-linguistic intelligence, spatial-visual intelligence, bodily-
kinesthetic intelligence, musical intelligence, naturalist intelligence, interpersonal intelligence,
and intrapersonal intelligence. The aforementioned are the different types of intelligence a
person may possess. If these different types of intelligence are acknowledged and are hone, it
would help the students build up their strengths and address their weaknesses. In improving
these diverse capabilities, students are not limited to being intellectually significant, but they
could use their intelligence to help them succeed in the future. An artist can be wrong at Math,
an engineer can be the worst in English, and doctors sometimes do not excel artistically, but
that does not mean they are not good at their professions. Everyone is blessed with varying
talents, abilities, and capabilities which differ from one another. All of these are important in
their own way.

In “A Medal Does Not Define You”, it highlighted that what is valuable is not the medals,
certificates, or grades that one received because these are all temporary. What is important are
the experiences, the good relationships formed, and the person’s happiness. What is essential is
to have a life that one is proud of. According to a 2019 report, it was stated that youth from
high-performing schools were often or constantly feeling stressed that affected their health and
well-being. What are high ranks, tons of certificates, dozens of trophies, if there is no
happiness? What is the purpose of all of these successes if the person is just going to live a
miserable life? Material things and achievements may contribute to happiness, but some may
not feel fulfilled or even feel empty in the process of achieving these. In the grand scheme of
life, performance in school would not matter so much, maybe in the application form, but as
time passes by, it would not matter. What matters is how a person can adapt to the work field
and apply what they have learned in the real world. Not all people can show what they know
through tests that standardize their grades, but they can comply when asked to create
something out of it. Everyone has different capabilities and talents because these are what
make each person different and unique, and this should be acknowledged more.

In life, the actual value of a person is not measured in numbers. IQ cannot measure
wisdom and the quality of life. One should eliminate numbers from their life because what is
truly important lies beyond numbers. Acknowledging that each person possesses multiple
intelligence has not yet been normalized, which is why this should be advocated more for the
mental health of the students and their overall well-being. A high GPA does not equate to a
happy and fulfilling life. This stigma of believing that only those who excel in class are the ones
who will be successful should stop because people are more than their grades. They are more
than the numbers written on their report card. Achievement is not everything in life because
real lessons come from experience, failures, the struggles. As long as one is living the life they
are happy and proud of, they are successful in life.
