4.2 Piping Heat Loss Calculation

A. Internal heat ressistant, R1
Internal volumetric flow rate Q = 30.0 m3/h
Internal velocity v = 1.01 m/s
Internal Reynold number NRe = 3,334
Internal Reynold number criteria = Turbulence
Internal Prandtl number NPr = 337.9

For internal flow, Nusselt number are calculated by using following equation by
Gneliensky (1976) :

𝑁𝑢=(𝑓/8)(𝑅𝑒−1000)𝑃𝑟/(1+12.7(𝑓/8)^(0.5 ) ( 〖𝑃𝑟〗 ^(2/3)−1))

Internal Nusselt number NNu = 93.9

Project No. : SSG-RA-G5-2024 Date : 15-Mar-2024

Then, heat transfer coefficient calculated using :

ℎ=(𝑁𝑢 𝑘_𝑖)/ 〖𝐼𝐷〗 _𝑖

Internal heat transfer coefficient hi = 197.0 W/m2 degC

Thus we get Internal heat ressistance by convection :

R

Internal heat ressisstant R_1 = 2.4E-04 0
C/W

B. Pipe wall conduction heat ressistant, R2

Pipe inside diameter ID = 102.3 mm
Pipe outside diameter OD = 114.3 mm
Inner pipe thermal conductivity k pipe = 45.0 W/(m 0C)

For conduction ressistance in pipe wall side :

R=(ln⁡(𝐷_𝑜𝑢𝑡⁄
𝐷_𝑖𝑛 ))/2π𝐿𝑘
Inner pipe wall conduction ressistant R_2 = 6.1E-06 0
C/W

C. Insulation conduction heat ressistant, R3

Pipe outside diameter OD = 114.3 mm
Pipe outside diameter with insulation OD_ins = 214.3 mm
Insulation thermal conductivity k_is = 0.034 W/(m 0C)
Insulation conduction ressistant R_3 = 4.5E-02 0
C/W

D. Insulation cladding conduction heat ressistant, R4

Pipe outside diameter with insulation OD_ins = 214.3 mm
Pipe outside diameter with cladding OD_clad = 216.3 mm
Insulation cladding thermal conductivity k_clad = 14.9000 W/(m 0C)
Insulation cladding conduction ressistant R_4 = 1.5E-06 0
C/W

E. Environment side heat ressistant, R7

Environment air velocity u = 5.0 m/s
Environment side Reynold number NRe_5 = 69,267.5
Environment side Reynold number criteria = Turbulence
Environment side Prandtl number NPr_5 = 0.7
Environment side Rayleigh number NRa_5 = 25,441,182

Environment side are directly exposed to ambient air, and Nusslet number are
calculated by combining both forced and free convection. For forced convection,
Nusselt number are (Churchill & Bernstein correlation) :

Nusselt number are (Churchill & Bernstein correlation) :

and for free convection (Churchill & Chu correlation) :

𝑁_𝑁𝑢={0.6+ 〖 0.387𝑁𝑅𝑎 〗 ^(1⁄6)/[1+

(0.559/𝑁𝑃𝑟)^(9⁄16) ]^(8⁄27) }^2

Forced convection Nusselt number NNu_f = 171

Free convection Nusselt number NNu_n = 37
Combined Nusselt number NNu_7 = 171

Environment side heat transfer coefficient h_o = 20 W/m2 degC

Environment side heat ressisstant R_5 = 1.1E-03 0
C/W

F. Overall heat transfer coefficient

Now, the heat resistant above are summed up to determine overall heat transfer
coefficient. For pipe region, heat flows from internal pipe to outer side pipe or vice
versa based on temperature different. Thus , R1 through R5 are sum up, then overall
heat transfer coefficient are calculated :

𝑅_𝑇𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙=∑▒ 〖𝑅 _1+ 𝑅_2+ 𝑅_3+ 𝑅_4 〗 + 𝑅_5

〖𝑈𝐴〗 _𝑇𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙=1/𝑅_T
otal
Total heat ressistant R_tot = 0.0466 0
C/W
Overall heat transfer coefficient UA_tot = 21 W/0C

5.2 Heat Loss and Outlet Temperature

The calculation are start by applying basic energy balance and derive the equation
that occurs on system. Calculation are simplified to steady-state by set to zero
accumulation term.

" " 𝑑𝑇/𝑑𝑡= (𝐹 𝐶𝑝 (𝑇_𝑖𝑛 − 〖 𝑇〗 _𝑜𝑢𝑡 )−𝑈𝐴∆𝑇)/(ρ 𝑉 𝐶𝑝)

Set dT/dt to zero, and rearranging gives :

𝑇_𝑜𝑢𝑡= 𝑇_𝑖𝑛− (𝑈𝐴(𝑇_𝑖𝑛 −
