NSTP and Gender and Development (GAD)

Seminar on “Drug Education, Prevention and Control Programs

and R.A. 11313: Safe Spaces Act”
Reaction Paper by: Dhenise Ices A. Dela Cruz BSCS-1

The seminar was very impressive because it deepened my understanding and

taught me how to handle situations where the world is not favorable to our well-being.
These highlighted the two key topic which is the "Drug Education, Prevention and
Control Programs" and "R.A. 11313: Safe Spaces Act" in NSTP and Gender and
Development (GAD). It is all about community awareness and drug-related concerns,
which greatly influences us as students to become advocates for safe spaces, drug
education, and prevention.

The first part of the seminar was a discussion on “Drug Education, Prevention
and Control Programs” facilitated by PMES Michael D. Pontoy and PSSg Stevic R.
Almanon from the Provincial Community Affairs and Development office. This made me
realize how dangerous drugs can be to societies as well as individuals’ lives. According
to them, education, prevention, and community involvement in drug-related issues are
key factors in managing them effectively. They insisted on the point that drug problems
require an approach that considers all aspects of human life; body, soul and spirit.
Another impact point is when the speakers communicated that drug preventive measure
are not only about saying no to drugs but also entails creating an environment where
individuals feel valued have support access opportunities. I therefore understood that
stopping drug addiction required more than just individual effort but collective
responsibility within a community too. I believe that drug abuse has terrible outcomes on
people’s health as well-being. One should avoid drugs at all cost while making good
choices in life. It is inclusive of maintaining sobriety when it comes to drugs which
requires being educated about their consequences. Finally, for instance, drug abuse
can be prevented through education, and those who are affected with the problem of
addiction to it may benefit from community intervention programs developed to help
them recover from this continuation.

The seminar also discussed on the Safe Spaces Act provision of the law aimed
at establishing public spaces that will be free from all forms of harassment and will
accord everyone including women, and LGBTQ+ community members with equal
treatment. In strengthening diversity and inclusivity this act was important and it was
highlighted by Atty., Annyka Frances Beatriz C. Dela Cruz, a speaker during the
seminar. As a student, I feel that knowledge is a powerful tool that can promote
understanding and create acceptance for diverse individuals. It’s not only people in
authority but every other person as well who are covered by this law which is currently
operational safeguarding every individual against cyberbullying and sexual harassment
whether it happens face to face or online. Moreover, I learned how different types of
misconduct can happen both offline and on the internet such as acts that could amount
to harassment. In addition, this law was necessary in protecting others’ rights and
working together to form a society where each person feels valued through advocacy
work and awareness creation.

In conclusion, the seminar was a transforming experience and has given me

valuable information that I can use to make better decisions in the future. It had also
inspired me to work towards changing the society for good especially in relation to drug
education as well as prevention and making safe environments for everyone. Attending
it has been a great privilege and I am hopeful of using the knowledge acquired here to
bring about positive change in our community.
