1.13.1 According to the ASME VIII Code, a lethal substance is a “poisonous gas or liquid of such
a nature that a very small amount of the gas or the vapor of the liquid mixed or unmixed
with air is dangerous to life when inhaled”.
1.13.2 As per ASME VIII, it is up to the user to define if the vessel is in lethal service. The EPC
contractor shall identify in the client specifications which are the criteria for lethal service.
This shall be the task of the equipment engineer who shall perform a careful review as
“Lethal Service” has a big impact on equipment cost and manufacturing: only butt welds
are allowed, they shall be 100% X-rayed, 100% MPI on internal and external welds as well
as location of temporary construction welds, PWHT (Post weld heat treatment) must be
done for carbon steel and low alloy, etc. In addition, some client specifications demand
integral nozzles for vessels in lethal service. Classification as lethal service should be
avoided wherever possible as it has a significant impact on equipment cost for little or no
gain: pressure vessels are a negligible source of leak compared to piping flanges. In
addition, the Plant is provided with systems to protect the operator against leaks.
1.13.3 For toxic gases, these systems include a fixed detection and alarm system, portable gas
detectors, and escape masks. Doing 100% X-ray of welds is costly and does not
necessarily detect defects as X-rays are subject to interpretation while, in any case, the
vessel is subject to a hydrostatic test.
1.14 Miscellaneous
1.14.1 All parts fabricated shall be smooth, true, clean and free from burrs, grease and
dents.
1.14.2 Openings for passage of workman must have exposed edges rounded.
i) All stainless steel parts shall be pickled and passivated. Pickling and Passivation shall be as
per ASTM 380.
ii) All parts shall be fabricated in accordance with good shop practice and in uniformity so that all
corresponding parts will be inter-changeable.
2.1 General
2.1.1 Design conditions for all equipment shall be in accordance with the data
sheets/specifications and applicable codes and standards.
2.1.2 Design pressure is normally specified at the top of vertical vessel or at the highest point
of horizontal vessel. The design pressure at any lower point shall be determined by
adding the maximum operating liquid head and any pressure gradient within the vessel.

solution is preferred. Where immersion is impractical, pickling may be accomplished
by wetting the surface by
i) Swabbing or spraying
ii) Partial filling the item with pickling solution and rotating or rocking so that the entire
surfaces receive the required chemical treatment.
The maximum period for which the pickling solution shall be allowed to remain on the surface is 30

for further drainage.
3.5.5 Provide for the preservation of equipment after testing and acceptance at the manufacturer.
Conservation should protect the equipment from corrosion during transportation and for
storage in an open area, under a canopy for 24 months from the date of delivery.

* Dimensions for reference.
2.1. The number of supports located along the device should be set during the design depending on the
length and weight of the device, while one support should be fixed, the rest movable. This should be
indicated in the technical draft.
2.2. Sliding of the mobile support from the temperature extensions of the device must be carried out on the
backing sheet, which is completed with the mobile support or on the metal structure.
2.3. The stability of the body of the device in the locations of the supports should be checked by calculation
2.4. Support SHEETS are allowed to be made with an angle of coverage of 180°, if this is due to the
calculation of stability. The weight of the reference sheet in this case must be recalculated.
2.5. The support sheet must be welded to the device with an intermittent roller seam along the perimeter.
The size of the weld leg should be assumed to be equal to the smaller thickness of the body-support sheet
joint.
It is allowed to weld the support to the device without a support sheet with homogeneous materials of the
2.8. Welding of the support ribs to the device and to the support sheet must be performed by a one-sided
solid seam.
2.9. Welding of the support must be performed with a solid one-sided seam. It is allowed to use other types
of weldment joints with the size of the leg not less than specified in the standards.
2.10. It is allowed to make large-sized parts of the support welded from parts under the condition of
complete penetration. The sliding surfaces and the mating surfaces must be cleaned flush.
2.11. For type 1 supports, a welded version of the base plate is allowed instead of a bend, and the thickness
of the rib must be equal to the thickness of the base plate.
2.12. Supports for vessels and devices with a diameter of up to 3200 mm inclusive must be welded to the
body of the device at the manufacturer.
Supports for vessels and devices with a diameter of more than 3200 mm are allowed to be welded during
installation, the support sheets must be welded to the device at the manufacturer.
2.13. For transportation of supports separately from the device in the central edge of the support it is
necessary to provide an opening for slinging (see drawing. 8).
Drawing. 8
2.14. In case of delivery of supports separately from the device at the manufacturer, the control assembly of
the device with a support with an assembly marking must be carried out, which ensures that the support is
welded to the device on the installation site without fitting.
Marking is carried out by applying the contour of the adjacent extreme edges of the support with a specific
marking of one edge and the body of the device to the body of the device with indelible paint.
2.15. The flatness tolerance of the backing sheet and the base plate for the type 1 support is not more than
2 mm over the entire length, for the type 2 and 3 supports not more than 2.5 mm over the length of 1000
mm, but not more than 8 mm over the entire length.
2.16. The tolerance of the alignment of the holes in the base plate relative to the axes of the holes in the
backing sheet is not more than 2 mm.
2.17. It is allowed to make a support with radii exceeding the maximum radii specified in the tables, but
within the permissible loads on the support.
2.19. The selection of the threaded bushing for the adjusting screw should be carried out by the developer
of the technical project, depending on the permissible load (see Table. 9) indicating the size of the thread in
the drawing of the general view of the device.
2.20. Before the concrete gravy, the threaded part of the adjusting screws is lubricated with graphite or
grease.
2.21. When pouring, the concrete must not reach the sliding surface of the support on the backing sheet.
2.22. After alignment of vessels and devices on the foundation and solidification of the concrete gravy, the
adjusting screws, as well as the M16 bolts that serve to attach the backing sheet to the movable support
during the installation of the device on the foundation, must be removed.
The threaded holes are clogged with anticorrosive putty.
2.23. For devices installed on a metal structure (frame) if the installation and alignment of the horizontal
position relative to the frame is made at the manufacturer, the threaded bushings for the adjustment screws
and bolts M16 are not installed.
2.24. Adjusting screws, support plates, lock nuts are inventory tools of installation organizations and
manufacturers are not supplied.
2.25. At the request of installation organizations, enlarged holes or grooves (for a movable support) must be
provided in the supports for the foundation bolts, on which the washers are installed (item 6).
2.26.Welding of the washers for the foundation bolts on a fixed support should be carried out during
installation after the device is installed on the foundation.
The washer is not welded on the movable support.
2.27. For a fixed support in the base plate, it is allowed to make grooves instead of holes for the foundation
bolts as in a movable support.
2.28. The foundation bolts in the movable support must be positioned so as to ensure the free movement of
the device from temperature expansions.
2.29. The nuts and lock nuts of the foundation bolts must not be tightened. There should be a gap of 1 - 2
mm between the nut and the washer.
2.30. It is allowed to use square washers with a square side of 60 mm instead of round washers for
foundation bolts.
2.31. When delivering vessels and devices with supports installed on the foundation, the movable support is
completed with a backing sheet, bolts M16.
2.32.The backing sheet must be stationary relative to the foundation.
2.33. When installing vessels and devices on a metal structure (frame), the backing sheet must be provided
on the metal structure.
2.34. If the installation and alignment of the horizontal position of vessels and devices relative to the metal
structure (frame) is carried out at the manufacturer, then the threaded bushings for the adjustment screws
and bolts M16 are not installed.
2.35. The actual weight of the supports may differ from that specified in the standard within ±5 %.
