What is BIM?

BIM is a work method that is defined in the context of collaborative culture and integrated practice, and represents
a profound transformation that affects all the design, construction and asset management processes that we have
known so far.

This new work method integrates all the agents involved in the building process, architects, engineers, etc.,

What is the history of BIM?

The concept of Building Information Modeling (BIM) originated in the 1970s, when computer-aided design (CAD)
systems began to be used for architecture and engineering. However, the initial focus was more focused on visual
representation than on data management and interoperability between different disciplines.

As technology advanced, especially in the 1990s and 2000s, new tools and standards emerged that enabled
deeper integration of information into digital building models. This led to the development of the modern concept
of BIM, which focuses on the creation of intelligent 3D models that contain detailed information on all aspects of a
construction project, from geometry to costs, energy performance and facilities management.

The term "Building Information Modeling" began to gain popularity in the late 2000s, and has since gained wide
acceptance in the construction industry. Today, BIM is widely used around the world and is considered an essential
tool for improving efficiency, collaboration and quality in the design, construction and management of buildings
and infrastructure.

▪ What are the differences between CAD and BIM technology?

CAD drawings represent individual components and do not necessarily contain detailed information about their
relationship to other objects or elements of the project, and BIM technology is based on the idea of creating an
intelligent virtual model that contains complete information about all aspects of a project.

1. Focus

CAD focuses on the design and representation of 2D and 3D objects. BIM is a broader approach that encompasses
the creation of an intelligent virtual model that contains complete information about all aspects of a construction
project.

2. Modeling

With CAD, one focuses on creating drawings. With BIM, it is possible to focus on creating a construction model,
from which drawings can be generated.

3. Collaboration

CAD does not allow multiple members to work on a file at the same time. The BIM methodology encourages and
makes necessary the collaboration and involvement of all members of the project.

▪ What are the benefits and challenges in the use of BIM software?
BIM (Building Information Modeling) software has many benefits, such as:

Efficiency

Design and construction teams can work more efficiently. BIM also helps minimize construction errors and save
financial resources.

decision making
Teams can make informed decisions backed by accurate data. BIM also allows you to collect data on the
performance and condition of building equipment.

Sustainability

BIM contributes to energy efficiency and waste reduction.

BIM also has some challenges, such as:

Lack of ability to share data with subcontractors who do not have or do not want to adopt the technology.

Lack of early involvement of subcontractors with the main contractor.

"Commercial" selection is apparently carried out later and later in projects.

BIM technology provides greater control and precision to project members, but it can also create challenges.

▪ What is the most common BIM software available today?

Revit (Autodesk) is one of the most used BIM programs in the architecture and construction sector. Its widespread
use has driven the development of a very powerful support service, both from the software house itself, Autodesk,
and from a community.

Revit has firmly established itself in the market thanks to its ability to model with pre-designed parametric objects.
It is widely used in architectural design, engineering and construction of buildings and infrastructure elements.

Other popular BIM tools include: Archicad, Allplan.

▪ What is Revit and its Parametric Modeling Relationships?

Revit is building information modeling (BIM) software that allows users and work teams
to conceive buildings and their components through two- and three-dimensional
representation.

Parametric modeling is a method that describes the entire design process, rather than
focusing only on individual results. Revit LT provides coordination and change
management across the relationships between all elements of a project. These
relationships are created automatically by the software, or by the user with their work.

Parametric design makes it easy to make changes and adjustments to the design at any
point in the life cycle.

▪ How Revit manage Elements and Elements Behaviour?

In Revit, the behavior of elements is determined by their context in the building. The
context is determined by how the component is drawn and by the constraining
relationships established with other components.
Revit also integrates external reference management into its interface. Before starting an
architectural project, it is necessary to have prepared a collection of references of
different nature that serve as support to manage the initial configuration.

▪ How Revit´s User Interface is organized?

The Revit interface is made up of the following elements:

1 – Tool or ribbon tabs:

It is where all the modeling and program management tools are grouped, which are organized by tabs. The external
plug-ins that we incorporate are also organized by tabs. There is the possibility to determine the visibility of certain
tabs.

2 – Instance Properties Window:

It is where we are informed of all the instance parameters, whether of the view or the selected element. The
parameters are ordered according to different headings proposed by the program.

3 – Family and type selector:

Organized within the properties windows, this window shows us the different families and types loaded in the
project, whether of the views or the model elements. Any element selected in the graphic area will be identified by
the family and type to which it belongs.

4 – Category selector:

Also arranged within the properties window, this window informs us of the category of the elements selected in the
view. If there are none, the category displayed is that of the view.

5 – Graphic area:

The graphic area is the window where we view all the elements of the model as well as the planning tables. In a
work session you can have as many windows open as you want.
