MODULE 6: SCHOOL CULTURE


INTRODUCTION
Now that you are a good grasp of the various ecologies that concern the learners, the teachers,
the school, and the community, let us explore more deeply the basic concepts related to school
culture. In this module, you are going to learn school culture develops, why it is important, and
what features constitute it. At the end of the module, you are asked to connect school culture
within the ecology of teachers and school, as well as the ecology of learners.

TOPICS
Practices in different school cultures and principals’ improvement work

TIME FRAME
Face-to-face classroom interaction intended for introducing this module : 0.5hr
Self-guided study and other learning tasks : 2.5hrs

INTENDED LEARNING OUTCOMES. At the end of this module, you’re expected to:
1. Define school culture;
2. Explain where culture comes from and why it is important;
3. Describe the key features of school culture;
4. Explain how school culture can be shaped by leadership of school principals;
5. Critique a research article on school culture; and
6. Generate a hypothesis based on a research article (specifically based on its theoretical
framework or its findings).

LEARNING ACTIVITY: SELF-GUIDED STUDY AND RESEARCH ARTICLE CRITIQUE

Read the following research article, summarize it, and write your critiques. Do this in long-size
bond papers or with the aid of a word processor (e.g., Microsoft Word, in case you have a
personal computer or laptop; to be printed in long-size bond papers). Be guided with the rubric
found in the Appendices section.

Follow the guide questions below in doing your research article critique paper:

What is the background of the study? Why did the authors do the study?
What is the theoretical framework used? State its key assumptions.
What is the problem being studied?
What methods (activities) did the authors use (do) to answer the research problem?
What are the main findings?
How did the authors explain their findings?
What did you learn from the findings of the authors?
If you are to make sense of their findings, would you have a different explanation? If yes,
please write it down.
Cite one or two contexts where the findings of the researchers may be applicable.
What other problems or questions are not answered by the authors of the research
article?
State your other impressions of the research article.
