Chemical bonding
• formed because of the force of
attraction between atoms or group of
atoms
• elements form bond with other
elements to attain stability
Types of chemical bond
• Ionic Bond
• Covalent
• Metallic Bond
Ionic bond
• formed by transfer of electrons
• exist between positively charged
metal and negatively charged non-
metal
• leads to formation of ions:
cations (+) = lose electron
anions (-) = gain electron
Covalent Bonding
• Formed between non-metal elements
• Formed through sharing of electrons
• Can be polar or non-polar
Examples:
Polar and Non-Polar
Covalent Bond
Non-Polar Covalent Bond
• often occurs between atoms that are
the same
• electronegativity difference between
bonded atoms is small (0-0.40)
• electrons are shared equally between
atoms
Example of non-polar covalent bond
Polar Covalent Bond
• always occurs between different atoms
• electronegativity difference between
bonded atoms is moderate (0.41-1.70)
• electrons are not shared equally
between atoms
Example of polar covalent bond
Electronegativity
• Measures the tendency of an atom to
attract electrons
• Helps predict the type of bond (if it is
ionic, polar or non-polar covalent)
1.71 and above

0.41 – 1.70

0 – 0.40
Types of Covalent Bond
Based on
Number of Bonds Formed
Single Bond
• Formed when only
one pair of the
electron is shared
between the two
participating atoms.
Double Bond
• Formed when two
pairs of electrons are
shared between the
two participating
atoms.
Triple Bond
• Formed when three
pairs of electrons
are shared between
the two participating
atoms.
