ACTIVITIES AND GOING OUT

1. Do you go out a lot?

These days, I don’t go out as much as I used to, but I still like to go out to bars or
Page |
nightclubs every now and then. And I always jump at the chance to hang out with my
23 friends at a coffee shop or in the park, shooting the breeze and just chilling.

2. What activities do you like to do during a day out?

Answer 1
My ideal day out would definitely include a hefty meal at one of my favourite
restaurants, with a group of my close friends. I also love going the cinema and catching
up on the latest blockbuster releases.

Answer 2
Well, my favourite way to spend a day out surely would be to go the beach and spend
the entire day swimming in the sea, soaking up the sunshine because sunshine
makes me happy and just watching the world go by.

3. Do you like spending your day out alone or with others?

As an introvert, I’m always very comfortable spending time alone, and find it easy
to have fun by myself. Having said this, I would actually prefer to spend a day out
with other people. Usually the best experiences are ones that are shared.

4. What outdoor activity would you like to do in the future?

Answer 1
I’d like to do more rock climbing. I’ve done it a bit in the past and it’s right up my
street but unfortunately now I live a long way from any mountains so it’s difficult to find
time to travel. However, I would never pass up any potential opportunity to climb
again in the near future.

Answer 2
Well, there is a long list of activities which I plan to do in future if I get a chance.
However, on the top of that list would be going jogging in the park. I
believe jogging will bring tremendous benefits such as refreshing your mind, calm
your soul and effectively relieve your stress especially when you are under
pressure from the fast-paced living. The fresh and quiet atmosphere in the park totally
enables me to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

BORROWING/ LENDING
1. How do you feel when people don’t return things they borrowed from you?

Answer 1
Page |
I am a person who always keeps my promise. So, if somebody lends me something, I
25
would definitely return it to them without a doubt. Therefore, I feel frustrated when
somebody doesn’t stick to their word. It could be a reflection on their personality
and affect our relationship.

Answer 2
Well, it’s subjective to what the item is. If it’s something simple and meaningless like
stationery, I would not be too upset if it wasn’t returned. On the other hand, from
personal experiences, if it’s something substantial like a large sum of money, then
friendship would be absolutely on the line.

2. Do you like to lend things to others?

I am a very generous person by nature and I do not like to see others struggle,
therefore, I would always reach out to help. Of course, there would be exceptions to
what I would lend such as my boyfriend, my diary or my super expensive camera.

3. Have you ever borrowed something from others?

Yes, on a daily basic. Some items I commonly borrow are accessories and clothing
amongst friends. You know exactly how girls are, we don’t like to wear the same thing
more than once so it does come in handy.

4. Have you borrowed books from others?

Yes, certainly. In order to reduce costs, my circle of friends tend to exchange books
with each other, instead of each of us purchasing the same ones. That way we can save
loads of money and enjoy reading more great foreign books such as Harry Potter or
some biographies of Steve Jobs or Michelle Obama.

Vocabulary highlights:
1. Without (a) doubt = used to emphasize your opinion: không còn nghi ngờ gì nữa

Example: She is without (a) doubt the best student I have ever taught.

thất vọng

3. Stick to sth (phrasal verb) /stɪk/: If you stick to a law, rule, or promise, you obey Page |
it or do what it states: giữ (lời hứa), tuân thủ (luật) 26

feelings, rather than based on facts: phụ thuộc vào cái gì…

Example: Whether something is objectionable is a subjective question.

Describe a person who has interesting ideas or opinions.

Page | You should say:

133 who this person is
how you know this person

what ideas/opinions he/she has

and explain why you think these ideas are interesting

Sample answer

( Introduction 1)
One of life’s most genuine joys is to be surrounded by talented people with loads of
amazing ideas and intriguing perspectives in life because you will learn an
abundance of meaningful/ amazing things from them. That’s why I always feel so
grateful/blessed to have a fruitful relationship with my beloved teacher - James, a
67-year-old Irish man, with a heart of gold.

( Introduction 2)
Well, I am so thankful to have so many fruitful relationships and be surrounded by a
lot of people with loads of creative ideas and engrossing / captivating/ stimulating
viewpoints/ perspectives in life. Among those, my beloved teacher James Doyle is the
most outstanding one, who I would like to talk about now.

(Body)
He was actually my colleague at AIC (American International College) about 9 years ago
and later on become my English teacher. My very first impression about him was so
funny and whenever mentioning this, my memories come flooding back. He looked
like Professor Dumbledore in Harry Potter, with a pointed face, fair complexion and
frowning eyebrows. Honestly, I was kinda scared to strike up a conversation with
him. Surprisingly, he asked me some questions about class rules and turned out to
be a very nice (= to be a truly) gentleman. We instantly got on like a house on fire
and built up a great friendship. To me, James is like my grandfather because he is
someone who I can always turn to for valuable advice.
BAND 8.0 SAMPLE ANSWERS IELTS SPEAKING

Being with James, you would never get bored because he is full of optimism and
tremendous energy. He used to be a psychologist so he’s a great listener. You can
ask him anything in life and he will give you detailed information about it with innovative
thoughts.
Page |
From him, I have a better grasp of / I gain a better understanding ideas about inner
134
peace, genuine happiness as well as self-esteem. He always motivates me to practice
counting daily blessings as one of the way to show gratitude towards life. He said
that it’s one of the optimal / viable/ best methods to achieve inner peace because
grateful people are all aware of all life challenges and adversities but choose not to
focus on it. I mean, we all have those days, so whenever I feel down in the dumps, I
apply this theory and it works miraculously. Also, he explained to me why some people
can never feel satisfied or happy. To put it simply, because they always think that only
when they have big houses, fancy cars or perfect partners, will they feel happy. Actually,
it’s so wrong because only when you start to honor yourself, nurture your body with
an open mind and loving heart and always live life to the full, will you achieve
genuine happiness. Undeniably, James is a glass-half full person, which really
inspires me to have a positive outlook towards life.

What I absolutely love about James is that he’s so humorous, chatty and
knowledgeable. He can waffle on about any topics - food, music or even politics. His
sharp and sarcastic comments about Donald Trump whenever we talk are absolutely
hilarious. Oh, he’s also brilliant at languages. Thanks to him, my English has been
improved incredibly (= unbelievably improved). I now can remember tons of useful
idioms like: Birds with the same feathers, flock together. Or “Youth is wasted on
the young” by William Shakespeare.

(Conclusion)
It’s so wonderful to be with such kind of bubbly person like James. I think the world
needs more people like him.
