2 Do you think you have a good quality of life?
Why/why not?
3 What exercise do you like to do? How often do
you do it?
4 What do you think makes a happy life?

3 Read the text quickly. What ten factors does it

mention that can contribute to a good quality of
life? Do you agree with each one. Give reasons
for your answers.

Living the good life

A recent study has shown that people in the UK
have a worse quality of life than those in many
other European countries. The research showed
that companies in the UK generally have longer
working hours, leading to increased stress and
anxiety for employees, less holidays and time
off work, and lower wages than in many other
western countries.
Researchers compared information on 17 factors
in the international study, including social
pressure, cost of living, the sense of
community within towns and cities and life
expectancy. The weather, how much exercise
people do, and the availability of leisure
facilities were also considered.
Results showed that France and Spain came top
of the quality of life list. The main contributing
factors people mentioned when questioned in
these happy countries were a good climate with
plenty of sunshine, the many green outdoor
spaces they can spend leisure time in, and better
working hours which mean they can spend a lot
of time with family and friends.
