Gender cuts across multiple dimensions, conditions, and issues of social relations among and between people in society. This sociological perspective affects multiple
aspects of who we are, what we become as well as choices and decisions we make. This course emphasizes the study and analysis of gender as social construct which
covers both social and political contexts. This includes how key institutions such as family, state, school, workplace and media shaped our lives. It will discuss the
COURSE DESCRIPTION sociological perspectives of sex, sexuality, and gender, and how these categories are constituted by beliefs and influential role of social institutions to different facets of
societal life. Further, the course examines intersections of gender with class, race, ethnicity, and more institutionalized set of social practices which differentiates men and
women, thus, understanding the apparent difference and inequality between them. It will survey sociological studies governing their value or significance to understand
and transform gendered norms.
At the end of the course, the students will be able to
1. Identify and analyze how gender is constructed as a “social fact”
