A breast abscess is a painful collection of pus that forms in
the breast. A swollen lump develops under the skin and is primarily
caused by a bacterial infection. One in ten women (in the age group 18
– 50 years) is affected by breast abscess. It has also been found that
around 3% of women with mastitis who are/were being treated with
antibiotics, develop breast abscesses. It causes breast pain and
swelling

Keep the breasts clean by washing them daily with mild
soap and water. Wipe off dried secretions and gently
dry the breast thoroughly with clean towel.
After breast feed, wipe the nipples and areolae with
sterilised cotton dipped in boiled, cooled water.
At the end of a feed, allow breasts to dry naturally in the
air.
Apply lanolin cream daily to the nipples and areolae to
prevent them for cracking.
Apply a warm, moist compress to the affected area
several times a day.
