topic
A breast abscess is a painful collection of pus that forms in
the breast. A swollen lump develops under the skin and is primarily
caused by a bacterial infection. One in ten women (in the age group 18
– 50 years) is affected by breast abscess. It has also been found that
around 3% of women with mastitis who are/were being treated with
antibiotics, develop breast abscesses. It causes breast pain and
swelling

1. Central or subareolar infection-

- This infection occurs when the milk ducts become infected

or inflamed with an abscess.
- This infection is most likely to develop in people who
smoke and chewing tobacco.
- In addition to experiencing symptoms on both breasts, it
is common to notice nipple changes, such as nipple
retraction or unusual discharge.

2. Granulomatous lobular mastitis-

- This infection can cause a painful but noncancerous mass

to develop in the breast.
- People with this breast condition may have problems
treating the infection with antibiotics.

3. Peripheral, nonlactating infection-

- This is the most commonly occurs in people with existing

medical conditions, such as diabetes or rheumatoid

- Those who have a history of breast trauma or take
steroids are also at greater risk.
- This type of infection often leads to inflammation or a
visible abscess on the breast.
- Causes of skin infection include sebaceous cysts grow on

- People with large breasts or those with a history of breast
surgery or radiotherapy have a higher risk of this

 After breast feed, wipe the nipples and areolae with
sterilised cotton dipped in boiled, cooled water.
 At the end of a feed, allow breasts to dry naturally in the
air.
 Apply lanolin cream daily to the nipples and areolae to
prevent them for cracking.

2min Summarised SUMMARY

the topic.
In this lesson plan we have discussed, regarding definition
of breast abscess, types and causes, signs and symptoms,
pathophysiology of breast abscess, diagnostic evaluation and in
management, medical management, surgical management, nursing
management of breast abscess, prevention methods and their
complications.

2min CONCLUSION

After this lesson plan, I have concluded that breast abscess is

the inflammatory process caused by mostly bacteria. It can cure by
antibiotic therapy. In some cases, there will be the need of surgical
removal of abscess. Health education regarding prevention must be
given to lactating mothers.
