Vector Geometry & Linear Algebra Theorem-List

This document provides a summary of theorems covered in a math course up to Section 3.2, organized by chapter. It lists the theorems covered in Chapters 1-3 and some properties or proofs that were omitted. The document is intended as a study guide for the theorems covered so far in the course.

Math 1300, Section A03

Theorems up to Section 3.2

This is a guide to the theorems we’ve studied so far.

Note that this is only intended as a study guide, for your convenience. It’s not
intended to be definitive. Any material we discuss in class (whether explicitly
called a “theorem” or not) is testable material. Occasionally, the proofs of
certain proofs were explicitly omitted in class; you are not expected to know
the proofs for these cases.
As you study, ask yourself the following questions:
(a) Do I understand the definitions of all the terms in the theorem? It

(b) Do I understand what the theorem is saying?

(c) Why is the theorem true (i.e. proof)?
(d) Can I come up with examples illustrating the theorem? It is also helpful to
think about examples to which the theorem does not apply; i.e. examples
where the hypotheses of the theorem do not hold, and the conclusion doesn’t
hold either. Trying to come up with (counter)-examples will help with the
previous questions.
Chapter 1
• Theorem 1.2.1 and 1.2.2

• Theorem 1.4.1 (properties of matrix operations)

• Theorem 1.4.2 (properties of zero matrices)
• Theorems 1.4.4–1.4.7 (theorems on inverses)

• Theorems 1.4.8, 1.4.9 (properties of transpose)

• Theorem 1.5.1 (row operations and matrix multiplication), proof omitted.
• Theorem 1.5.2 (elementary matrices are invertible)
• Theorem 1.5.3 (big equivalence, 1st version)

• Theorems 1.6.1, 1.6.2 (# of solutions to a system of linear equation)

1
• Theorem 1.6.3 (AB = In implies A and B invertible)
• Theorem 1.6.4 (big equivalence, 2nd version)
• Theorem 1.7.1 (properties of triangular matrices); proofs omitted but are
straightforward enough that they are good exercises

• Theorem 1.7.2, 1.7.4 (properties of symmetric matrices); proofs omitted

but are straightforward enough that they are good exercises.
Chapter 2
• Theorem 2.2.1

• Theorem 2.2.3 (proof omitted)

• Section 2.3, equation (1) ; effect on det of multiplying by a scalar
• Lemma 2.3.2 (effect on det of multiplying by an elementary matrix)

• Theorem 2.3.3 ( A invertible iff det A ̸= 0)

• Theorem 2.3.4 and 2.3.5 (compatibility of det with products and inverses)
• Theorem 2.3.6 (inverse via adjoint matrix), proof omitted
• Theorem 2.3.7 (Cramer’s rule), proof omitted

• Theorem 2.3.8 (big equivalence, 3rd version)

Chapter 3
• Theorem 3.1.1 (properties of vector operations); proofs omitted but are
straightforward enough that they are good exercises

• Theorem 3.2.1 (properties of norms)

• Theorems 3.2.2 and 3.2.3 (properties of dot product)
• Theorem 3.2.4 (Cauchy-Schwartz) proof omitted
