Narrative Report On Soil Sampling

A student conducted soil sampling from 6 locations in a lowland rice field, mixing and pulverizing the samples. pH testing using litmus paper found the soil to be neutral. The student planted corn seeds in pots with the soil samples and will observe their growth.

Narrative Report on Soil Sampling

Date Conducted:April 16,2024
Lowland Rice Field Soil Sample 1 Pithole
Lowland Rice Field Soil Sample 2 Pithole
Lowland Rice Field Soil Sample 3 Pithole
Lowland Rice Field Soil Sample 4 Pithole
Lowland Rice Field Soil Sample 5 Pithole
Lowland Rice Field Soil Sample 6 Pithole
Collecting Soil Sample
Mixing all the soil samples collected from 6 pitholes of lowland rice field
Pulverizing the soil samples
Narrative Report:By digging 20-30 cm depth of the lowland rice field using a spade in downward
thrust and taking 2 to 3 cm thick layer of soil, and i put the samples in a clean container and
labled it,each soil sample is labled on what pithole it came from, after collecting all samples,i put
all the samples separately on each plastic bags with the number of their corresponding
pitholes.By mixing all the soil samples,i pulverize it using a wooden mallet,on a flat insulated
metal surface. While pulverizing and removing all the roots of weeds preventing it from growing
back when using the soil samples for planting corn seeds on pots. After mixing all the samples,it
is now ready for Soil pH determination by the use of litmus paper.
Soil pH testing using litmus paper.
Soil sample use for soil pH testing
2 grams taken from the soil sample and put inside the plastic cup,and adding 10ml water, mixing
the solution and to be set aside for 1 minute.
Narrative Report:After 1 minute ive test the solution by using red and blue litmus paper,as
stated that if the red litmus paper turns blue, means that the soil is Basic pH,and if the red litmus
paper doesn't change in color, that means that the soil sample is Neutral in pH.As for my
observation during experiment, there is no sudden change at all in the litmus paper,so therefore i
conclude that the soil sample in our lowland rice field is Neutral in pH,and so that's the reason
why napier grass is growing healthy on the field. The importance of this experiment is to prove
that the soil samples can germinate corn seed, right now,on my first pot with the samples, ive put
3 corn seeds, but only two growned, but i will continue observing on other 7 pots with
corresponding soil samples.
