I. Summary

Thank you for your purchasing and using of TANK Microwave

Digestion System. We appreciate your trust and will try our best to
serve you.
As a kind of sample pretreatment technology, microwave digestion
emerged in the middle of 1980s. Since the advantages of fast
heating rate, homogeneous heating, low blank and energy saving,
microwave digestion has been widely used in the heavy metal
element analysis of foodstuffs, environmental samples, human body
or animal samples, agricultural products, Chinese herbal medicine
samples, textiles, alloy, cosmetics and mineral samples.
Adopting double magnetrons of industrial grade and non pulse
frequency conversion control technology, TANK Microwave
Digestion System achieves rapid and complete digestion of
inorganic or organic samples under the condition of high
temperature and high press. Fiber optic sensor (FOS) guarantees
real-time feedback of temperature and pressure acts as the
monitoring index. Besides, other safety measures are adopted to
guarantee the system’s safe and steady operation.(This manual
applies to model PRO、Basic、ECO )

2. Assembly and connection procedures of control tank
1. the nut hole at the bottom of the tank cap and tighten it. Hold the
tank cap and shake gently the OFT to make sure it is tightened
properly without any sign of getting loose, or otherwise air leakage
will be caused.
2. Prepare a sample and put it into the inner tank. The sample must
be placed at the bottom of the inner tank to make sure it can be
completely submerged in acid. No sample shall be left on the inner
wall of the inner tank.
3. Add acid solution into the inner tank to make sure the sample is
submerged totally in acid. If there is any violent reaction, the tank
shall not be capped until the reaction quiets down.
Note: For the sample with unknown components, the sample easy
to be oxidized, and highly active organics such as alcohol, ketone
and glycols, it is necessary to leave the tank open for 15 min. for
pre-digestion.
4. Cover the inner tank with its cap and then top the brown elastic
sheet onto the tank cap.
Note: There is a small hole in the center of the control tank cap and
a connector used to connect pressure pipe near the vent valve. DO
NOT mix it with the standard tank.

- 18 -
TANK User’s Manual V1.0

5. Screw the vent valve to the vent and tighten it to prevent air
leakage.
6. Put the inner tank into a clean and dry outer tank, and then a
subassembly is formed. Install the subassembly to the tank rack.
Rotate the subassembly to make the vent valve face the front part of
the tank rack (marked). Make it accurately directed at the lower part
of the screw and the slot of the elastic sheet, and tighten the
fastening screw on the tank rack by hand firstly and then by torque
spanner. It will must immediately stop when it clicked.
Note: Please confirm that the preset torque of the spanner is 8N·M.
The device cannot be used unless there is a spacer at the bottom of
the tank rack.
7. Put the optical fiber through the screw of pot rack , and insert it
into the bottom of the fiber pipe carefully , and then covered it with
protection cover.
8. The turntable is installed in place with the crankshaft at the bottom
of the device. Connect the pressure sensor to the pressure
connector on the top of the device and make it tightened, and insert
the fixing column on the control tank rack into the slot marked with
“1”. Then, connect the temperature sensor to the optical fiber
temperature connector on the top of the furnace chamber, and
screw the pressure sensor to the pressure connector on the control
tank cap. Finally, make the turntable rotate for 2 or 3 rounds to
ensure the two sensors will not get entangled.

- 19 -

Fig. 3.2 Schematic diagram of tank assembly

3. Assembly of standard tank
1. Prepare a sample and put it into the inner tank. Make sure that
the sample can be totally submerged in acid. If there is any violent
reaction, leave the tank open for 15 min for pre-digestion.
2. Cover the inner tank with its cap and then top the brown elastic
sheet onto the tank cap.
3. Screw the vent valve to the vent and have it tightened to ensure
no air leakage.
4. Put the inner tank into a clean and dry outer tank. Then install the
formed subassembly to the tank rack, and rotate the subassembly
to make the vent valve and the front part of the tank rack point in the
same direction.
Note: The device cannot be used unless there is a spacer at the
bottom of the tank rack.
5. Use a spanner with its preset torque of 8N·M to tighten the
fastening screw on the tank rack.

- 20 -
TANK User’s Manual V1.0

6. Repeat the steps 1 to 5 to assemble the rest of the standard

tanks.
7. Mount the standard tank onto the turntable by inserting the fixing
column on the tank rack into the fixing groove of the turntable. Place
the digestion tank in a symmetric way as much as possible.

Fig. 3.3 Schematic diagram of turntable mounting

4. Cooling and opening of digestion tank
1. The software system of the microwave digestion system (TANK)
is programmed with a cooling step. When the temperature is higher
than 80℃, the fan is activated to conduct forced-air cooling, and the
fan stops running after the temperature is lower than 80 ℃ . At this
time, the digestion tank can be opened.
Note: It is not suggested to put the digestion tank into water for
cooling. If the tank is immersed in water, it is necessary to put the
tank into a dryer for several hours before next use.
2. Remove the standard tank from the turntable and put it in a fume
hood, and then remove the control tank. Before the control tank is
removed, it is necessary to disconnect the optical fiber temperature
sensor from the connector on the top of the furnace chamber. Then,

- 21 -
TANK User’s Manual V1.0

hold firmly the tank rack with one hand to make it directed accurately
at the vent, and turn slowly the vent valve with the other hand in
anticlockwise direction to release the internal pressure. Do not turn
the vent valve in a quick and continuous way, which may otherwise
lead to air bleeding from the thread of the vent valve. After complete
depressurization, disconnect the pressure pipe from the tank cap,
take out the control tank (Note: cover the optical fiber temperature
sensor with a hand to avoid its collision with the upper wall of the
chamber) then take the optical fiber. After the fastening screw is
unscrewed with a spanner, remove successively the subassembly,
the outer tank and the tank cap in a careful and gentle way.
3. It is suggested to depressurize the standard tank in the fume hood,
with one hand holding the tank rack firmly and the other one turn
slowly the vent valve in anticlockwise direction to release the
internal pressure (the vent valve shall direct outwards without
pointing the operator).

Note:
1. Make sure the pressure has been released completely before
removing the inner tank and other related parts, otherwise the acid
will splash, even injure the operator.
2. Do not capsize inner tank to avoid spilling of the substance inside
it.

- 22 -
TANK User’s Manual V1.0

Fig. 3.4 Pressure releasing

5. Cleaning and checking procedures
5.1 Inner tank
TFM material begins to soften up when its temperature exceeds
320℃. Such a high temperature is not allowed during digestion (For
the device, the maximum allowable temperature is 250 ℃ , so it is
suggested that the set temperature shall not be greater than 210℃
if HNO3 is used as digestion acid).
The inner tank cleaning procedure shall be chosen based on test
and analysis results (%, ppm, ppb, ppt).
For analytical experiment on major elements, immerse the inner
tank after use in nitric acid with its concentration of 5% firstly. Then,
clean it with water and rinse it with deionized water. Finally, let it air
dry.
For analytical experiment on minor elements, it is recommended
that 8mL nitric acid shall be added for cleaning:

- 23 -
TANK User’s Manual V1.0

Heating- Hold
age Temperature Pressure
up Time Time

1 4 min 120℃ 350 PSI 2 min

2 6 min 180℃ 800 PSI 8 min

For analytical experiment on trace elements, cleaning can be

conducted repeatedly for several times according to the procedures
mentioned above.
After the pressure inside is released, remove the tank cap and take
out the acid in the inner tank. Rinse the inner tank and its cap with
deionized water and let all the parts dry totally.
Users can optimize the cleaning procedures according to specific
experimental conditions.
5.2 Tank rack
If the tank rack is severely corroded by acid, please do not use it any
longer, because it has been unable to bear high-strength pressure.
The following reasons can lead to ageing of the tank rack:
1. The tank rack is exposed to acid solution for a long time.
2. The fastening screw of the tank rack is over-tightened.
Note: Do not expose tank rack to acid solution for a long time. After
each use, clean the tank rack with hot soapy water, then rinse it
thoroughly with fresh water and finally let it dry totally.
5.3 Outer tank
1. Check visually whether there is any damage or deformation. After
completion of digestion for every time, use wet cleaning cloth to rub
the outer tank dry. If any peeling or damage is found, replace it.
2. Before digestion, it must be ensured that the outer tank and
spacer are completely dry.
3. Do not immerse the outer tank in water. The absorbed water may

- 24 -
TANK User’s Manual V1.0

damage the composite layer during heating.

Note: The service life of digestion tank varies from operating
conditions and operators’ standards. After each use, it is necessary
to check its wear conditions. For better performance and safety, it
must be replaced if any fracture or serious color deterioration is
observed.

V. Operating Steps and How to Use

1. Key steps of microwave digestion

1. Prepare and place sample and reagent
2. Assemble digestion tank
3. Mount the digestion tank onto turntable
4. Select an appropriate digestion procedure
5. Start the digestion procedure
6. Release the pressure and remove the digestion tank after
completion of digestion
7. Clean and check all parts of the digestion tank
2. Sample digestion (take soybean as example)
Take crushed soybean with its weight no more than 0.3000g, with a
precision of one ten-thousandth of a gram. Then, put the sample
into the inner tank. Meanwhile, add 8mL nitric acid with its
concentration of 70% and 1mL hydrogen peroxide. After all these
have been done, assemble the digestion tank.
Note: It is suggested that the weight of sample soybean, pastry,
flour or tea shall not exceed 0.3g. If it is higher than 0.3g,
pretreatment is necessary (put the sample on the hot plate with its
temperature of 120℃ for 20 min. then put the sample into the tank
for microwave digestion). The tea shall be immersed in nitric acid
firstly and leave it there overnight before it is put into the tank for
microwave digestion.
Put the digestion tank in which sample has been placed onto the

- 25 -
TANK User’s Manual V1.0

turntable.
Set the temperature of the digestion procedure to be 170 ℃ , the
ramp time to be 10 min., pressure to be 800 PSI and hold time to be
10min. Then run the procedure.
After completion of digestion, it is not until the temperature falls
below 80℃ that the standard digestion tank can be removed from
the device. It is necessary to unscrew the vent valve firstly to
release pressure and then open the tank cap after complete
depressurization. What’s more, the digestion tank must be opened
in fume hood. When doing this, the operator must wear
anti-corrosion gloves, goggles and a mask. The control tank shall be
removed according to the standard steps.
Transfer the digested sample into a volumetric flask. Rinse the
digestion tank cap and the inner tank with water for 2 or 3 times, and
the cleaning solution shall also be transferred into the volumetric
flask to fix its quantity for measurement (Some samples need
removing acid. The method of removing acid is: put the digestion
solution on a hot plate for evaporation until it becomes sticky and
then add distilled water to scale mark of the volumetric flask).

VI. Notes

1. All components of the reaction tank must be dry and free from
contaminants so as to prevent the excessive high temperature and
the damage to the tank as a result of the partial absorption of
microwaves by the tank.
2. Except the TFM inner tank and PFA lid, the cleaning of
components using any organic solvent or acid is prohibited. Do not
use a stiff brush to clean the inner wall of the lid or the tank in case
of scratching the inner wall, otherwise that may result in easier
adsorption of sample as well as the reduction of service life.
3. Prior to use of the digestion tank, soaked in 5% nitric acid is

- 26 -
TANK User’s Manual V1.0

preferable. Then it should be washed with water, rinsed with

deionized water and dried in air.
4. If there is any dirt or acid droplet on the outer tank, a damp cloth is
applicable to wipe and clean.
5. The sample weight of any unfamiliar organic sample or of any
unknown sample should be strictly controlled within 0.3g. The
sample weight of any general sample or simple sample should be
controlled in no more than 0.5g.
6. The volume of liquid in digestion tank must be controlled in
8-15ml.
7. To digest any unknown sample, a pre-digestion for at least 15
minutes must be performed in an open vessel (such as a placement
for some time with the tank open) to ensure that the volatile or easily
oxidized material can be fully released before seal-off of the reaction
tank.
8. When heating the alkaline or saline solution with microwave, the
salt may be precipitate and form crystal that gather in the inner wall
of the reaction tank and result in excessive high temperature and
damage to the tank due to the partial absorption of microwaves by
such substances.
9. Do not place the instrument in a fume hood. Acids and other
chemical fumes will damage to circuit and safety interlock door. .
10. Digestion of following substances in the microwave digestion
system is prohibited: explosives (TNT and nitrocellulose, etc.),
propellant (hydrazine and ammonium perchlorate, etc.),
perchlorates, glycols (ethylene glycol, and propylene glycol, etc.),
aviation fuel (JP-1, etc.), pyrophoric chemicals, acetylenic
compounds, ether (melting cellosolve - ethylene glycol phenyl ether,
etc.), acrolein, ketones (acetone, and methyl ethyl ketone, etc.),
alkane (butane, and hexane, etc.), and the two-component mixtures
(nitric acid and phenol, nitric acid and triethylamine, nitric acid, and
acetone, etc.), glyceryl trinitrate, nitroglycerin or other organic
nitrites and lacquers.
