Wow! 25 years of the Voice.

Congratulations to every one of you who has been involved with The Voice during
the past 25 years and beyond, in whatever capacity. We have some memories from
this time in the centre of this issue; how it has been developed and evolved.

25 years ago, we were all getting excited about the New Millennium. Tony Blair was
our Prime Minister. Football shirts, baggy-fit sweatpants and even full-on tracksuits
were all part of the 1999 wardrobe, not a 'skinny jean' in sight.

The Space Shuttle Discovery became the first vessel to dock with the International
Space Station and DVDs were the latest technology. HD TV was introduced, but too
expensive for most people! The Ford Focus and the Vauxhall Astra cars were the
ones to have.
I hope you enjoy this special edition of The Voice.

Coming soon!! Prescription Delivery Service

We endeavour to deliver the best possible service to all our patients, and we
understand that some people find it difficult to come to the surgery during
working hours. To combat these difficulties, we are developing several
initiatives to help you.

Firstly, we are implementing a repeat prescription delivery service for our

housebound patients and are in the process of contacting them with details of
how to register for the service. We plan to split the area into 4 regions and
deliver to one area each week. If we have a good response to our invitations,
we hope to have this service in operation by mid-June.
Initially this will only be available for our registered housebound patients, but
this may be expanded in the future.

We also have plans to install a dispensing machine at the front of the building.
This will enable patients to collect medication 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Information will be posted on our website and our facebook page
www.facebook.com/GrimstonMedicalC3ntre
giving more information as it becomes available.

We always welcome and value your comments and feedback. Please continue
to help us to help you by completing the NHS Friends & Family Test. Forms are
available in the surgery and online via our website.

TO ALL PARISHIONERS
TO ALL PARISHIONERS
Dear Friends,
Welcome to May, already into the fifth month of the year, summer is on
its way. We have two Bank Holidays this month, long weekends, a
chance to relax or have a holiday.
I have recently returned from Hong Kong, an opportunity for me to visit family. A long
flight, thirteen hours in the air! The flightpath now has to avoid Russia, Iran and
Israel, so it has been made even longer. The huge planes carrying around 300
passengers are always full and have facilities such as 'in-flight entertainment' on
individual seats. After watching two movies, I get a little fidgety and have to move
around, up and down the aisles getting some extra drinks, anything to distract me
from the remaining nine hours left on the flight. To be fair though I like flying, I love
travelling to 'far off' places. I love tracking the flight on the screen and seeing the
places we are travelling over at 38,000 feet in the sky, Northern China, the Gobi
Desert, Turkmenistan, Turkey, Bulgaria, Hungary …

What a wonderful world we live in! There are so many different places, huge
diversities and natural phenomena creating geographical sights of wonder and awe.
Hong Kong is a huge mega city, high rise buildings towering into the skies which,
during typhoons sway slightly (not visibly though!) as a means of safety. People's
lives are lived in close proximity both at work and in communities. Yet you don't have
to travel far to find beautiful beaches and hillsides covered with shrubs, where hiking
and walking are real fitness opportunities.
However far I travel though, I am always pleased to be home in Norfolk, my roots are
firmly in this place.

Our churches are a continuing presence in our villages, they have been here for
many hundreds of years, dating back to around the eleventh and twelfth centuries.
As you travel around our countryside you can see many of our church towers, a
visible presence of Christianity and a special place in our communities. Many of our
churches are open all day, so when you have a few minutes to spare do come
inside. They are places of rest and quiet, places where we can come together to be
with God. In our Christian year, at the beginning of May, we have Ascension Day,
when Jesus was taken back into heaven, after his resurrection at Easter. What better
news could we have that Jesus returned to show us the way to eternal life.
May is a time to look forward with hope and confidence of summer days, green
shoots emerging and our own lives fulfilled in love and peace with all. Hope you
enjoy the Bank Holidays. Rev'd Sue Martin

The foodbank is no longer in operation but hopefully it will be restarted in September.
The Easter Hampers that were put together for our users, were lovely and generous
with every child getting an Easter egg plus plenty of other goodies, so thank you to
all our generous donators for your help and support in the 18 months that the
foodbank was running. All the leftover tins ,packets and jars were taken to the Night
Shelter where is was gratefully received.
We are still continuing the weekly breakfasts where you can have a full breakfast for
only £3.50 or a lighter option starting from just 50p. The community lunches will
continue on a twice monthly rota. I try to put on a varied menu but on request I'm
happy to make a vegetarian or vegan option just let me know a few days before the
meal you'd like to attend.
I’m not able to put on a Spring Fayre again this year due to my other commitments
and lack of help, but please, if you can spare some time, I'd love to do a summer
fete and a bingo night but, I really need some help. Please support your village
hall or there is a danger of losing it. Don’t forget, we have a super selection of books,
cds, dvds and jigsaw puzzles selling from 50p towards funds or free swaps
We live in a wonderful village and I thoroughly enjoy the company of the people who
attend the breakfast/coffee mornings and the community lunches , please come
along and you too could be making friends with a whole bunch of people that you
have yet to meet. Sandi Rose

Gayton Past Times
I read in The Voice that Gina has been trying to find out about the Tapestry of the
Last Supper, which hangs in Gayton Church. As to who where and what? Well I can
answer these questions!
In 1988 there was a newspaper article reporting that 2 Gayton ladies had collected
gifts and toys ,for the orphaned, handicapped and blind children at a school in
Jerusalem. One of the ladies was my Mother, Evelyn Dewing, and her friend Brenda
Croucher. They had a 9 - day trip to the Holy Land, organised by the Inter-Church
Travel group to deliver the gifts, and do some sight- seeing, I remember her telling
me about swimming in the Dead Sea which was quite an experience.
On her return she brought back the Tapestry of a picture of the Last Supper. This
hangs in the Church. Mother also had a brass plaque engraved with the details on. I
was going to fix this under the tapestry, but it got put in a drawer and forgotten about
until now!! It's now in its rightful place, although 36 years late. Mother would never
have forgiven me. Sorry mum. (I'm not sure I do either Ken! But lovely to have the
mystery solved! Thanks)
Newspaper article
TOYS GO TO NEEDY
This week two West Norfolk women are touring the heart of the Holy Land with suitcases filled with toys,
games, and books.
Brenda Croucher and Evelyn Dewing have left their
Gayton homes laden with gifts for orphaned,
handicapped, and blind children at a Jerusalem school.
Brenda and Evelyn, both members of Gayton church,
hoped to visit war-torn Beirut. But the trip organisers
thought it was too dangerous.
Both women support the Bible Land Society and
Brenda sponsors an Armenian Jewish child who lives
in Beirut. She sends him £8 a month to help pay for his
education and upkeep.
They have both been busy making and collecting toys
and games for weeks.
“We asked what things we could take over, but it
seems there's a real shortage of play equipment and
toys, such as Lego balloons and felt tip pens. We'll be
filling our cases with gifts to take over there,” said
Brenda, who is making her first trip abroad.
It is a visit both women have wanted to make for a long
time, and they'll be part of a large party organised by
the Inter-Church Travel Group and made up of people
from around the country.
The toys are not the only presents they have taken
with them. Before they left youngsters at the Seabank
Chapel at North Lynn presented Brenda with a cheque
for £150 raised during a sponsored run earlier in the
year. The money will go to the school for children
orphaned during the war.
During the nine-day trip the two will get the chance to see some of the historic parts of the Middle East
and will be taking a dip in the Dead Sea in between sight-seeing trips.
“I've wanted to go ever since I was a young girl at Sunday school. It's a dream come true,” said Evelyn.

Gayton Rangers are the senior section of Girlguiding for 14-18 year olds.
We meet for an hour a week and enjoy various activities. We spend some time
working on the Ranger Programme. There are 6 themes; Skills for my Future, Have
Adventures, Express Myself, Be Well, Take Action and Know Myself. Girls complete
Skills Builders, Unit Meeting Activities and Interest Badges in each theme to earn
badges and awards. The girls have almost completed their Have Adventures Skills
Builder where they have been exploring sustainable
travel.
We have completed many Unit Meeting activities from
creating Origami cranes to making CO2 fire
extinguishers.
The girls plan their own timetable each term and some
meetings are set aside for doing visits or activities that
they enjoy. Here is what one of the Rangers has to say.

“I really enjoy Rangers as it's a very welcoming and gives

girls a chance to carry on doing things after Guides.
Some of my favourite things have been going to Escape
Rooms with everyone and making pasta which we made gluten free so I could have
it. Just meeting up to talk and plan is really nice.
I love Rangers and recommend it to anyone who is in the age bracket to join. ”
You don't have to have been a Guide to join Rangers. If you are interested go
tohttps://www.girlguiding.org.uk for more information and register to join.

Gayton Football Club

The first team unfortunately saw relegation be confirmed to division

3 in April for the first time in 7 years. This was despite everyone’s
iinvolved best effort. The reserves finished 3rd from bottom in their
lleague as have the A team who are hopefully still in cup action by
tthe time of publication.

March's 100 club winner was Sam Barnes with April's yet to be drawn at the time of
writing.

The club have gone under a massive reconstruction over the last two years with the
club rebuilding still ging on after the previous regime. We are delighted to share that
Holly Meadows FC will continue to be a 'feeder' club for us as we create a pathway
into our adults team. This year we have seen a big rise in under 18s playing which
we are delighted with - this includes 4 that have made first team appearances well
done!

Off the pitch we continue to make progress, myself being promoted to joint first team
manager means that we'll have someone new come in to continue my work with the
reserves, a thankless task but we're hopeful of having the right person in to continue
the development of a young side.

We will be having a community day at Gayton Social Club in the next couple of
months. This is an annual event which has live bands, food trucks and kids activities.
A date is to be confirmed which will be out in the next issue.

We are also reaching out to new potential sponsors to contact the club, we have a
following across all social media platforms, roughly 3k, with a reach of around 25k.
Our packages start from £75 with a renewal price of £25, arguably the best and
cheapest price in local football. Sam Hewitt

Compost Corner.
May is the Whooosh month in the garden and greenhouse. It must
be the mega time for growth. It should be OK now to put out all your
bedding plants and half-hardy annuals. They are such a joy and so
colourful.
If you grew beans -Runner, French or Borlotti under glass and prepared the ground
with well- rotted manure or compost, you can now put them out. Most will need a
climbing frame and remember that they are hungry and thirsty plants, so keep them
well fed and watered in dry (ha ha) conditions.
Sweet peas, Cosmos and Sunflowers should be safe outdoors now. Let's have a
little competition for everyone – who can grow the tallest sunflower? You can send in
pictures or words to The Voice later in the year.

Take the side shoots out from the Tomatoes and watch out for whitefly. Those sticky
strips seem to be useful, pity we can't get them for slugs! Keep setting salad leaves,
lettuce and baby spinach plus herbs like Coriander and Rocket. One of those long
slim planters that fit onto a windowsill can look nice and be useful, set up with herbs
such as Mint, Coriander, Thyme, Parsley and Rocket. You can always buy a plant
from a supermarket, split it into a number of little plants, then plant into your trough
and put on a sunny windowsill. This will last for weeks, if kept watered.
Whatever you do, don't forget to take time to 'Stop and stare.'
When is it impossible to plant flowers? When you haven’t botany.

Gina's Page: a page of fun things

With these hot, sunny days - yes, I am dreaming - no time to

spend in the kitchen, so here is something quick and tasty

Nigella’s Instant Chocolate Mousse

INGREDIENTS
· 150 grams mini marshmallows
· 50 grams soft butter
· 250 grams good dark chocolate (minimum 70% cocoa solids) chopped into
small pieces
· 284 millilitres double cream
· 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
METHOD
1. Put the marshmallows, butter, chocolate and 60ml/¼ cup of freshly
boiled water in a heavy-based saucepan.
2. Put the saucepan on the hob, over heat, though keep it fairly gentle,
to melt the contents, stirring every now and again. Remove from the
heat.
3. While the chocolate mixture cools, whip the cream with the vanilla
extract until thick, and then fold into the cooled chocolate mixture until
you have a smooth, cohesive mixture.
4. Pour or scrape into 4 glasses or ramekins, about 175ml / ¾ cup
each in capacity, or 6 smaller (125ml / ½ cup) ones, and chill until you
want to eat. The sooner the better!

25 YEARS OF THE VOICE
PLUS A BIT OF HISTORY
Back in the 1980's – 40 plus years ago, there was a Church magazine called “Unity”
that served just Ashwicken and cost 8 pence.
Later, in 1997, it all changed again, as East Winch was added to the Churches
Group and West Acre was placed with Narborough Group.
This all happened as Revd Ian Whittle was appointed and Doris Collins of Birch Rd,
Gayton was the editor.
What these had in common was that they were produced within the Rectory without
any computers at all.
Articles were hand written or typed and then literally cut and pasted onto a master
sheet. If it was necessary for something to be enlarged or reduced, Doris would
catch the bus to Lynn where it could be done by 25% or 33% only. This master sheet
was then collated with others to form a set of pages that were printed on an old
photocopier in the Rectory – one side of a sheet at a time – so 12 page copies one
side then turned over to be 12 page copies the other side and 1200 sheets of each
copy – 28,800 photocopies.
It could sometimes take 8 hours and was dreadful in hot weather as the ink was very
sticky. Jim Cross of Gayton Thorpe was the chief printer – a hero.
The collation was originally done in the gun room at Gayton Hall with a group of
people circling a table, picking up one sheet at a time until reaching the other side
they were all stapled together.
Twenty five years ago, in 1999, things changed again when I gradually took over as
editor from Doris using a desk top computer.
“The Voice of the Villages” was launched as the free parish magazine, delivered to
all the homes in the area. It carried news from our Parish Councils, Schools and
Societies along with Church news.
As computers improved so did the quality and ease of production and, after 7 more
years, Sarah Renwick took over as editor and the magazine was then professionally
printed and collated by Minuteman and a colour cover was introduced for the first
time.
Throughout all this time, we have been very fortunate in being supported by all our
advertisers some of whom have been with us 25 years and more.
Likewise our volunteer distributors have been the
backbone of the distribution – in rain or shine - or Covid.
Thanks to all of them. Steve Williamson
25 YEARS OF THE VOICE
PLUS A BIT OF HISTORY
How amazing that “The Voice” has been going for 25 years, I remember when it first
started and the hard work everyone put in to getting it together. It has always been a
village magazine with something in it for everyone.

In the early days it was produced in the Rectory at Gayton with our dear late friend
Arthur Rippon manning the photocopier with the occasional trip out into the garden
for a quick fag while waiting for all the sheets to be printed.

We have been blessed with great editors who have taken on the challenge of
patiently getting all the information and sometimes having to chase some of us up
who run to the deadline!!
In the surrounding villages all our churches have had work done to enable them to
be centres for the whole community.
The magazine is something that binds us together and is so useful for people moving
into the villages as a source of reference for advertisements and very informative in
showing all the things happening in the villages.
Here's to the next 25 years Joy Smith Licensed Lay Minister

A bombshell hit me the other day when I opened an email from Gina. Twenty-five
years? And Gina retiring too? She asked me whether, as a contributor from the days
when East Winch was part of the Gayton Benefice, I'd write something for the
commemorative issue.
I enjoyed getting The Voice. Here in the Manchester suburbs, the church I go to does
splendid things, but there ISN'T A MAGAZINE!
The reports from village organisations, especially the parish councils in particular
kept us up to date with what was going on.

The distinguishing feature of the magazine is its cover. Way back, when the A5
format was adopted, the cover featured all five churches from East Winch to East
Walton squashed onto the same page. After that, a different church would be
featured each month. Gina put her mark on this by widening the scope of the
pictures to include lovely countryside views. I think she does all the camera work!

Cont’d overleaf
25 YEARS OF THE VOICE
PLUS A BIT OF HISTORY
It really is a team effort though. The rector's bit, gardening notes, jokes - across the
years contributors have tried hard to produce information and entertainment before
the deadline.

Apart from the contents, there's more work getting bundles of the mag out to
distributors, who put it through the letterboxes, come rain or shine.
Have you ever given a thought to the considerable amount of work involved in
getting the adverts right? It's really important because without them the mag
wouldn't be free, and they also bring in extra income for the churches. Steve
sweats away annually to bring them up to date, fit them in, and collect the dosh.
Vive La Voice! Nell Steele
The Voice of The Villages
(TVOTV)
You will remember that this was what The Voice used to be called. It was put together by
Val and Jim Cross then photocopied on to A3 sheets in the vicarage. A team of ladies
from the parish helped out every month with stapling each magazine.

Mike Chamberlain informed me one evening that Iain Thompson was prepared to look
after the advertisements and that I had to be the editor. Some 'orders' are just
impossible to refuse! Sid Verber managed the accounts and we became a happy team
of three.

The photocopier in the vicarage became too old to cope and that's where Minuteman
Press came in. They helped us to modernise the magazine including a colour front
cover and, despite lots of hiccups and frustration with the software initially, it worked out
in the end.

Don Bristo set up deliveries and sensibly divided the parish into 'delivery zones' and his
efficient band of volunteer deliverers enabled everyone to receive a magazine. I took
over from Don and John Currey is now doing a grand job with overseeing distribution.
Thank you to everyone who has delivered The Voice to us over the years.

It is a really a great parish magazine which is reflection of the hard work and dedication
of all those who have contributed to it over the years. Many thanks to Gina, our outgoing
editor, for all her hard work.

Sarah Renwick
25 YEARS OF THE VOICE
PLUS A BIT OF HISTORY

I've been involved with the Voice for 10 years - 9 as editor. By this time the present
format was established and my one request was that I could do the front covers.
Steve was my tutor and there were times when he despaired that I was not up to the
job, but I knew I was, so we battled on and I have to say since then he has been
supportive in so many different ways.

Sarah Renwick had always championed me through my tough times. To start with I
had an old, heavy laptop, that consistently collapsed, so I would lose a lot of work.
One such day saw me storming round to Sarah's house in high dudgeon that 'I was
out of here -better things to do with my time…' I will always be grateful to Sarah for
immediately setting in motion and achieving, getting me this brand new, superb state
of the art laptop, that will serve The Voice for many years to come.

Covid changed The Voice and a lot of our lives, but I am proud that we kept it going
through the troubled times and only missed one edition, which I was livid about. Of
course I lost most contributors because groups weren't meeting up and some people
were scared to socialise.

It soon became apparent that I would have to do some recruiting. A couple of people
turned me down flat, one will only do ad hoc articles. One only for a short time,
Rachel at Gayton school, despite her own traumas of home schooling etc, kept up
articles, so with a bit of diversity we kept going.

Now we are blessed with regular articles from some great contributors. The Pastoral
letter, The Parish Councils, The Village Hall, Gayton School and sometimes
Ashwicken, The Football Club, The Cricket Club, The Guides, Joy’s Church Services
and Stan’s Church News and of course, Kenny's Past Times and more recently Met
Matters. All making it worth while picking The Voice up and having a read.

Thank you to our supportive advertisers, Deliverers and the Distribution Team and
Minuteman Press, especially Dan and Sam. Congratulations and thank you to all
involved in the Voice and it's fore runners. Cheers! Gina

25th May - 2nd June
This year we are lucky to have 11 local
artists thing part in the NNOS event.
NNOS is an artists cooperative made
up of over 100 artists and makers and
this event allows us to showcase our
work.

Between the 25th May and 2nd June we will be opening our studios and
workplaces to visitors so you can meet and chat with the artists and have an
opportunity to buy direct from them. This is a totally free event and is a rare chance
to gain a behind the scenes perspective of what goes into producing the artwork.

Our local trail follows a route from Blackborough End, Pentney, East Walton (that is
me), West Acre and Castle Acre. Some will be in their gardens and some studios
and others in their homes. Many of us will be offering refreshments and here at
East Walton any donations for these will be going to St Mary's Church East Walton.

Copies of the North Norfolk Open Studios brochure and our trail details will be
available to pick up in local shops & Pubs.

We would love it if you were able to pay us a visit, it is the only major art trail
happening in Norfolk this year so pop the date in the diary and we look forward to
seeing you. Chrissie Lines

Met Matters Back by popular demand!!
144 Picadilly was a 100 room mansion at the junction of the Mall and Piccadilly
overlooking Hyde Park Corner. It had been empty and semi derelict for years and in
September 1969 was taken over by hippy squatters. Their numbers quickly
increased becoming quite organised and gaining a lot of publicity. The building was
surrounded by a dry moat. The squatters constructed a wooden drawbridge which
was the only means of access, pulled up to deter invaders.
2 am saw me on night duty with colleagues at Albany Street police station when an
Emergency call via the teleprinter states “CD require urgent assistance at 144
Piccadilly” CD being the code for West End Central C division. Any urgent assist call
was attended speedily by whatever means. All of us exited swiftly into the station van
and made our way as fast as possible.
Rounding the corner at the end of the Mall there were several loud bangs on the side
of the van. Roger Wood, riding shotgun with Brian Hooks driving said “?... me Brian
let's get out of here.” We parked by Wellington Arch behind a large crowd of people
and then joined our many colleagues. It turned out that the building had been a
storage facility with thousands of coloured plastic balls, slightly larger than a cricket
ball, filled with water, which with a plastic carrier and smaller ball, made up a Boules
game. When thrown from on high they bounced beautifully hence the noise of them
hitting the van, which bore the dents for ever.
There was not a lot we could do as we were hopelessly outnumbered with nobody
seemingly in charge. A flurry of balls would come raining down from the ramparts,
with us and the crowd ducking, not always successfully, a few wounded were carted
off to A & E. A large section of the crowd were skinheads and during the lull gathered
up the balls, charged and threw them back, odd ones scoring direct hits, made
apparent by the sight of a squatter collapsing with blood pouring from a head wound.
At this point we were confronted by a very attractive young lady who said with a posh
accent “ I think this is utterly disgusting. You are standing around laughing and
joking doing absolutely nothing.' A Pc from C division standing beside me replied
“That's rich coming from you. Bearing in mind your history you can ?...OFF”. She
went bright red and her partner dragged her away still protesting. As I had less than
a year's service at the time and wouldn't dream of swearing at a lady. I said “ How
the hell do you get away with that?” He replies “ Don't you know who that was?”
“Haven't a clue I said”. He replied “That was Christine Keeler”.
And now for a history lesson for the many of you who weren't around in the early
60's. Christine Keeler and Mandy Rice Davies were two 'ladies of the night 'who
plied their trade amongst the upper echelons of society. Their procurer, was Steven
Ward, a “masseur” to the gentry. He was jailed for living off immoral earnings and
committed suicide whilst in jail. Keeler was a regular favourite of John Profumo, the
minister for war in the Tory led government of Harold Macmillan. At the same time
she was also seeing a Russian, based at their embassy. The fear was secrets might
have been exchanged during pillow talk. Profumo resigned and it subsequently
brought down the government. John Dale

St Mary's Church East Walton Book Exchange

St Mary's, East Walton, has managed to find a suitable bookshelf to start a
Village Book Exchange in the Church. The Church is
always open and the shelf has been placed just by the
door.

The idea is that we can all donate books we believe others

may enjoy - only novels, biographies and children's books
at this stage please. We don't want to get overfull -
perhaps 5 shelves for adults and one shelf for children. If
the shelves are full - please do not leave more books.

If visitors wish to borrow a book, please return

it within 2 months. If you want to keep one the
idea is you should swap it for one of your own.
Either way - small voluntary donations in the
wall box next to the bookshelf are always
welcome for the upkeep of our special Saxon
church.

Grimston Cricket Club

Grimston CC Chairmans Report

As Chairman for over ten years now it is my pleasure to serve the club and be a part
of a very exciting time for us.

The club continues to grow at a phenomenal rate, with our adult's cricket provision
increasing by 300% - we now have teams on Saturday, Sunday, and a Ladies Team.
The youth cricket offering has also increased so we are now fielding teams at U9,
U11, and U13 – not to mention the fantastic ECB All Stars programme we are proud
to deliver for 5-8 Year Olds.

Once again local businesses have stepped up to help us, with The Three
Horseshoes sponsoring the whole club for this season – we are proud to see every
team turning out each week in their Three Horseshoes kit, and would encourage the
whole village to get behind this fantastic local business.

We are also very lucky to have CB Gardens as primary sponsor for the Ladies Team
– Charlie is a local man and has thrown his
support behind the burgeoning ladies
section.

We are always looking for new sponsors,

volunteers, and players, so please get in
touch if you would like to be involved,
whether running the BBQ or playing on a
weekend!
Once again, I would ask you to join me in
getting behind the players and volunteers
who are making it all possible.

We are proud to be a community club, and look forward to seeing lots of you at the
cricket ground during the summer.
Kind regards. Tim.

And Finally....
Why was the batsman's delivery left on his doorstep?
He was out!
