STA417 SPECIAL PROJECTS I

PROPOSAL FORMAT

The following elements must be included in the research proposal

1. Research Topic must be short clear and concise.

2. Introduction

• This is the introduction or background to the research problem or issue,

including an identification of the gap in the current research.
• Research question and, if possible, a research/thesis statement answering
the question
• Justification for the proposal research, i.e., why the research is needed

3. Literature review

• Preliminary literature review covering what others have already done in the
area
• Theoretical framework to be used in the proposed research
This forms the final part of the literature review section. It describes the
model that you are using in the research paper/thesis to demonstrate your
point.

It is the structure that can hold or support a theory of a research study. It

relates to how your arguments fit into existing theory(ies) in the specific
area.

4. Contribution of the research to the general area

An outline of how your research will make a change to an area of study.

Justification (in the introduction) explains why the research should be done.

It should explain how what you will do will lead to certain outcomes.

You need to outline:

• importance of the research outcome(s)
• practical or theoretical nature of the outcome(s)
• outcome could be the extension of a theoretical model to a new area,
or it could be something practical such as the development of a
checklist for managers.

5. Proposed research methodology

You do not have to describe the methodology to be used in great detail, but
you should justify its use over other methodologies.

For example, you could explain the reasons for using:

• a certain paradigm or theory
• qualitative or quantitative research
• a case study of a specific kind
• surveys, correlational experiments, field studies, specific statistical
measurements, etc.
• certain dependent or independent or moderating variables of a
particular sampling frame and the size of a sample

You could also explain how you are proposing to:

• have access to the data.
• analyze the data

You also need to provide operational definitions of key terms.

6. Expected outcomes

A brief description of anticipated outcomes (result directions) of the research.

Provide probable explanation for unexpected outcomes that may ensue.

7. Research plan and outline [Using a Gantt Chart]

Research plan or outline can go with a research timetable but have a different
function.

It lists what will be covered in each chapter or section of the proposed

report/thesis.

This helps the writer & the reader as it gives a framework for the direction your
proposed research paper/thesis will take. It also shows the reader the project is
well-organized and achievable in the time available.

You should provide one or two lines for each and chronologically.

8. Timetable of proposed research

This should indicate the weighting of each part of the proposed thesis in
percentage terms, the topics covered, approximate word limit and the
approximate length of time to complete them. This should be realistic to amount
of work in each activity and the time that would be required.

9. References [Harvard]

The refencing should be completed so the reader has confidence that you
actually accessed and read the material.
Note: Budget, although is a must to be included in a proposal, it will not be considered for
marking and thus remains an optional component.

The following are not expected (not normally included) in a proposal:

• ABSTRACT
• RESULTS
• DISCUSSION
• CONCLUSION
• SUMMARY
• CHAPTERS
