ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION (MEANING, OBJECTIVES, PRINCIPLES AND

SIGNIFICANCE)

Introduction: Environmental Education is the new areas of study of the discipline of education.
With recent developments and advances, environmental education is virtually a new source of
concern for educators, teachers and students. As with the rapid development in each area, there
are problems- both internal and external ones- to be confronted and resolved.

Environmental Education (EE) is a methodology in which people pick up familiarity with their
surroundings and secure learning, abilities, values, experiences, and passion, all of which will
empower them to act – separately and aggregately – to take care of present and future
environmental issues. It is the study of relationship and interactions between natural and human
systems. In short, environmental education is provided so that people can have a better
understanding of the world around them and knows how to take care of it properly so that the
world can be a better place. It is also a process that allows individuals to explore environmental
issues, engage in problem solving, and take action to improve the environment. As a result,
individuals develop a deeper understanding of environmental issues and have the skills to make
informed and responsible decisions. Environmental education furnishes individuals with the
mindfulness required to build up organizations, comprehend NGO exercises, create participatory
methodologies to urban planning, and guarantee future markets for eco-business. All of these are
not only good for the environment, but they will also end up being very good for the economy as
well, so everyone gets to benefit from the efforts of those who are going through environmental
education. EE is taught in schools, communities and in centers like parks, zoos and museums.

The components of environmental education are:

 Awareness and sensitivity to the environment and environmental challenges

 Knowledge and understanding of the environment and environmental challenges
 Attitudes of concern for the environment and motivation to improve or maintain environmental
quality
 Skills to identify and help resolve environmental challenges
 Participation in activities that lead to the resolution of environmental challenges
Environmental education does not advocate a particular viewpoint or course of action. Rather,
environmental education teaches individuals how to weigh various sides of an issue through
critical thinking and it enhances their own problem-solving and decision-making skills.
MEANING & DEFINITION OF ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION

It is a process to promote the awareness and understanding of the environment, its relationship
with man and his activities. It is also aimed at developing responsible actions necessary for
preservation, conservation and improvement of the environment and its component

DEFINITIONS OF ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION.

 Mishra (1993)- “E.E. appears to be a process that equips human beings with awareness,
knowledge, skills, attitude and commitment to improve the environment”

 R.A.Sharma (1996) - “E.E. refers to the awareness of physical and cultural environment
and perceives its relevance for real life situation. The problems and issues are to be
identified. The imbalances of environment are to be improved in view of Sustainable
development.”

 Unesco seminar (1976)- “E.E is a way of implementing the goals of environmental

protection. It is no a separate branch of science or field of study. It should be carried out
according to the principles of life-long integral education”

Environmental Education is a learning process that expands individuals’ information and

mindfulness about nature’s domain and related difficulties, creates the vital abilities and mastery
to address the difficulties, instilled confidence and stewardship and cultivates demeanor,
inspirations, and responsibilities to settle on educated choices and make dependable moves in the
field that they are working with. It’s an inter-disciplinary field that integrates fields such as
biology, ecology, earth science, geography; atmospheric science and mathematics because
understanding how environment works and keeping it healthy require knowledge and skills from
many disciplines. It includes all efforts to make general public aware of the knowledge of the
environment and environmental challenges through print materials, media, brochures, bulletins,
videos, or other media techniques.

programmes of E.E.

SIGNIFICANCE OF ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION:

Environmental education provides important opportunities for students to become engaged in

real world issues that transcend classroom walls. They can see the relevance of their classroom
studies to the complex environmental issues confronting our planet and they can acquire the
skills they’ll need to be creative problem solvers and powerful advocates.”
Environmental Education Benefits Students by…

 Improving Academic Achievement. EE improves test scores by providing students with

engaging lessons about the natural world that can be applied to all subject areas and grades.
 Breaking the Indoor Habit. EE offers an antidote to the plugged-in lives of today’s
generation, which is the first to grow up indoors. Children who experience school grounds
or play areas with diverse natural settings are more physically active, more aware of good
nutrition, more creative, and more civil to one another.
 Improving Student Health. EE gets students outdoors and active, and helps to address
common health issues in children today, such as obesity, attention deficit disorder, and
depression.
 Meeting 21st Century Needs. EE emphasizes skills essential for succeeding in tomorrow’s
world, such as questioning, investigating, defining problems, analyzing, interpreting,
reasoning, developing conclusions, and solving problems.
 Cultivating Leadership Qualities. EE emphasizes cooperative learning with others, critical
thinking and discussion, and a focus on action strategies with real-world applications.
 Improving Focus and Cognition. EE increases the ability of students to focus and
improves their cognitive abilities. Children with attention-deficit disorder also benefit from
more exposure to nature–the greener a child’s everyday environment, the more manageable
are their symptoms.
 Creating Enthusiastic Students. EE offers opportunities for rich, hands-on, real world and
authentic learning across the curriculum. This relevance to students’ lives engages and
inspires them more than traditional pedagogy.
 Fostering Innovative Teacher-Leaders. EE gives educators the confidence to take
students outdoor and to design more dynamic, interactive learning experiences that spark
students’ engagement.
 Addressing Academic Standards. EE offers an engaging way to meet the content and
skills identified in Common Core State Standards in English Language Arts and
mathematics, as well Next Generation Science Standards and C3 Framework for Social
Studies.
 Saving Schools Money. When students investigate and take action to improve the
environmental performance of their school buildings and grounds, they often cut costs in
electricity, water, waste management, and more.
 Contributing to Sustainability. EE builds the knowledge and skills needed to address
complex environmental issues, as well as take action to keep our natural world healthy, our
economies productive, and communities vibrant.
 Conserving our Natural Resources. Higher levels of environmental knowledge correlate
significantly with a higher degree of pro-environment and conservation behavior. The more
people know, the more likely they are to recycle, be energy efficient, conserve water, etc.
