Fun Facts About Mars
– Did you know that Earth is 303,019,470 kilometers far from Mars.
– Did you know that the first rover to ever touch Mars was called the Sojourner rover.
– Did you know that Mars is the fourth planet from This is how it looks like
the sun.
– Did you know that 3.7 billion years ago Mars used
to be habitable planet
About Mars
Mars has a thin atmosphere, which is made out of 95% carbon dioxide, 3%
nitrogen, and 1.6% argon. The surface of Mars is orange and red, which gave it
the nickname the red planet. The name was created by Romans as their god of
war because of the reddish colour of Mars, which symbolised as blood and the
Egyptians called it “Her Dasher,” which means “the red one”.
Mars Suit
For people to even go on Mars, they need a special suit to not cause them to
suffocate. These special suits are called a Mars suit or a space suit. A Mars suit
comes with lights on the side of the helmet, a camera in the middle of the suit, a
disposable water bottle, a secondary oxygen pack, a communication atenea, and
others. These suits are what make astronauts walk on Mars and find out cool
information about Mars.
Martian Surface
The Martian surface is basically the surface of Mars, which is highly toxic. Even
with the suit on, you might get radiation exposure, which can kill you in a short
time. The Martian surface has a rocky surface with volcanoes and craters.
The Sojourner Rover (The first rover to touch Mars)
The Sojourner rover was a small vehicle, and it was sent to Mars on December 4,
1996. It reached Mars on July 4, 1997. The Sojourner rover mission was a low
budget test to see if a vehicle could even reach Mars and survive on Mars, and to
everyone's surprise, the Sojourner rover carried out useful science and sent back
fascinating pictures of Mars. The Sojourner rover was a path for high tech rovers
that we now see today thriving on Mars.
The Mariner 9
The Mariner 9 was a robotic spacecraft sent to Mars to be the first spacecraft to
orbit another planet, but the Mariner 9 wasn't the only spacecraft trying to become
the first to orbit another planet the Soviet Mars 2 was also trying to. The Soviet
Mars 2 had an 11 day head start, but the Mariner 9 wasn’t going to let its creators
down it managed to beat the Soviet Mars 2, and not only that, it managed to map
85% of Mars surface. The Mariner 9 was a successful mission that helped us find
out a lot more about Mars.
Conclusion
Mars is an interesting planet that you can learn a lot about. What I learned about
Mars is that it is the fourth planet from the sun and that the first rover to ever touch
Mars was called the Sojourner Rover.
