Choosing a Career

As students progress to high school and college, they are confronted with the
important question on what career or profession they will pursue in life. In fact, some
even enter colleges still unsure about their career choices, and only some time later or
even years later they do realize their real passion or interest that define what they really
want to do for the rest of their lives. Therefore, as early as now, students must be able
to examine, determine, and align their needs and goals with their talents, and
personalities.

One’s interest or inclination may change over time. Triggered by different factors
and experiences, his/her abilities may surface only after some time. Thus, his/her skills
are works in progress. He/she continues to develop them through mastery and constant
learning. As he/she trails onto his/her chosen career paths, he/she should grow efficient

course. If one’s potential are aligned with his/her career choices , he/she will acquire a
worthwhile job, business , or livelihood and become a productive participant in the
economic development of the country. Renowed developmetal psychologist Howard
Gardner coined in 1983 the multiple intelligence theory, which explains that individuals
have different gifts and talents that need to be recognized. Knowing one’s unique ability
is crucial in one’s career choice. The following diagram shows the multiple intelligences
with brief descriptions. Take note that the existential intelligence, being the most recent
expansion to the theory, is not yet under study.

6
The following is a career chart inspired from Gardner’s multiple intelligences
theory. The term multiple intelligences was coined by developmental psychologist, Dr.
Howard Gardner in 1983, as a way to describe peoples natural inclination for learning
and engaging in the world.

Efren Peñaflorida of “Pushcart Classroom” By Nadine Postigo

Filipino Efren Peñaflorida is not your average teacher. He doesn't not teach
inside schools, but rather he brings schools to children all over the nation. It's no
surprise that Efren Peñaflorida became a sensation when his "pushcart classrooms"
became viral, which earned him the Hero Of The Year award from CNN in 2009.
The Kariton Klasrum project, or in English the Pushcart Classroom, was a collaboration
between the youth group Dynamic Teen Company and the community service
organization Club 8586. The project consisted of pushcarts that were stocked with
school materials, such as various books, pens, tables and chairs. The volunteers then
bring their mobile schools and create school settings in unconventional locations, such
as at cemeteries, parks or on the corner of a street: wherever the children were. This
initiative diverted poor children from joining gangs and instead motivated and supported
them to immerse themselves in education. They tried to make a difference in the lives of
the younger generation, to give them hope that there is a chance for a brighter future.

Efren Penaflorida was up against more than 9,000 nominees from over 100
countries. After weeks of online voting, CNN honored him as Hero Of The Year on Nov.
22, 2009. I personally loved and was moved by the speech he gave when he accepted
the award.

"Our planet is filled with heroes, young and old, rich and poor, man and woman,
of different colors, shapes and sizes. We are one great tapestry. Each person has a

17
hidden hero within. You just have to look inside and search for it in your heart. Be the
hero to the next person in need. So, to each and every person inside this theater, and
for those who are watching at home, the hero in you is waiting to be unleashed.

"Serve. Serve well. Serve others above yourself and be happy to serve. As I
always tell to my co-volunteers, you are the change that you dream, as I am the change
that I dream, and collectively we are the change that this world needs to be."

He became a household name in the Philippines after he received his award,

which in my opinion was well deserved. Peñaflorida humbly said that the award and the
title was significant because it gave him and his fellow volunteers the affirmation that
what they were doing was a worthy cause. Interest in helping, volunteering and
donating to his mobile classroom project poured in from all over the world. His pushcart
classroom project prompted other organizations to do the same in other parts of the
nation.
"Filipinos have become more aware of the need for these children to be educated,
fed and taken care of. Before, they saw a pushcart as a symbol of poverty. Now, they
see a pushcart as a symbol of hope and education."

According to Peñaflorida, as of 2015 there are already a total of 84 ongoing Kariton

Klasrum sites. He explains that the goal of the program is not to really replace traditional
schools, but more to entice the out-of-school youth to study again, to point them in the
right direction instead of letting them get lost in bad influences, and eventually to go
back to school and to finish their education. Korea.net Honorary Reporter

When you lack a sense of purpose, fear may slowly envelop your life. When you
are uncertain of what you’re doing, it is always a good exercise to revisit your vision,
mission, and purpose. By remembering the very reasons of your journey, you set the
boundaries of your choices and focus to what really matters in your life.

Setting One’s Vision

Vision is how one sees the world—a mental image of what the future will or could
be like. In order to set a vision, one should have the ability to think about or plan the
future with imaginations or wisdom. What is your ultimate dream? How do you see
yourself in the future? A vision may seem to be unreachable star, an impossible dream.
Yet, as long as you are convinced with what you set o achieve, then you are prepared
to cross the road less travelled.

https://www.google.com.ph/search?q=setting+One%E2%80%99s+Vision+clipart&tbm

Knowing One’s Mission

Since a vision is only a mental picture of the future, mission is action plan that
one will take to accomplish his/her dream. Mission refers to the actual steps and
operations that will carry out a goal. For example, if one envisions becoming a globally
competitive citizen in 10-15 years from now, his/her mission is to equip himself/herself
with the necessary skills and competencies that may be required from his/her in the
future. To execute this mission, the person needs to take an action plan, which may
include acquiring a good education, maybe a master’s degree, or further training on
international standards. In shorts, mission is the series of specific actions accomplished
over time in order to get closer to a dream.
20
Determining One’s Purpose
Purpose is the reason for which something is done or created or for which
something exists. It gives people the drive to continue to continue on their quest even
when the odds are against them. It gives people the drive to continue on their quest
even when the odds are against them. It is also the continuous search for meaning in
what people hold dear and what do they do with their heart’s convictions.

Clarifying One’s Vision, Mission and Purpose

As early as now, one should contemplate on his/her purpose in life. He/she
should listen to his/her heart and determine the one thing that gives him/her a sense of
meaning. By doing so, he/she could firmly set his/her her vision on strong grounds.
He/she should believe that he/she is capable this dream. A person can only fulfill it by
clarifying his/her mission by means of strategizing on how he/she could get closer to
realization of his/her goal. He/she should ask himself/herself the following questions in
order to discover his/her mission in life:

1. What value do I hold dear? How do I see myself in the future (vision)?
2. What is my action plan (mission) to achieve my dream?
3. What are the specific steps or operations (strategies) I need to perform in order
to realize my mission?
4. How does this goal give me a sense of meaning (purpose)?

Making a Personal Mission Statement

A personal mission statement is an expression of one’s purpose or advocacy,

explicitly stating an individual’s goal or desire that will serve as personal guide in
achieving a dream. These are the key ideas to include in composing a personal mission

21
statement: vision, mission, and purpose. For example, a grade nine student may set this
as his personal mission statement: “ I aspire to be a globally competitive graduate
(vision) by enriching my 21st century skills (mission); thus, becoming an effective
communicator, efficient collaborator, critical thinker, and creative contributor to nation
building (purpose).”

DOLE CHALLENGES UNEMPLOYED YOUTH TO DEVELOP LIFE SKILLS

https://
www.google.com.ph/search?q=life+skills+clipart&tbm=isch

From the Department of Labor and Employment

With graduation drawing near, with tens of thousands expected to join the labor
market, and with hundreds of thousands more who are not in employment, education, or
training—or NEET, Labor and Employment Secretary Rosalinda Dimapilis-Baldoz, is
challenging young people to develop life skills to be able to jumpstart their careers,
either in wage employment or entrepreneurship.

“Let’s face it. While we see our youth as dynamic potential innovators and
leaders in the present-day world of work, surprisingly, they still compose almost half, or
49.1 percent, of the country’s unemployed population of 2.4 million,” said Baldoz.

“Skills gap, or the mismatch between labor demand and supply, is the culprit for
the high youth unemployment in the country,” she said, explaining that a considerable
part of the unemployed population consists of educated workers—most probably young
ones.

“44 percent of our unemployed have reached or graduated from high school;
35.3 percent, on the other hand, graduated from college,” Baldoz said.

And because it’s almost graduation month, the labor and employment chief said
graduates ought to realise that in the current situation, the school-to-work transition in
the Philippines is long.

26
“It takes a long time for young Filipinos who leave their schools or universities to
pursue careers in the labor market, simply because of the skills gap,” she said, pointing
out the results of the ADB household survey in Manila and Cebu showing that it takes a
college graduate one year to find his first job, and up to two years to find a regular job.

The study also show that the period is even longer for a high school leaver who
takes up to three years to find his first job, and four years to find a regular wage job.

“The ADB study is seminal. It cited that educational attainment, social status of family,
and job search behavior are significant factors influencing the length and quality of the
school-to-work transition among young Filipino jobseekers,” said Baldoz.

To speed up the school-to-work transition, Baldoz said young people should take
note of what employers’ have said: entry-level employees lack life skills—and do
something about it.

In particular, they need to improve their attitudes towards work and in the work
place. They need to enhance their presentation and communication skills, she said.

Noting that very few youth undertake skills training during the transition from
school to work, she urged NEETs to train on life skills.

“That’s the only way they can improve their prospects in the labor market,” she
said.

1. Why does having too many graduates seem to be a problem in the country?

2. Why so many young graduates remain unemployed?

______________________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________________

3. Why is it important to align one’s goal with the local and global world demands?

______________________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________________

Trading Economics, an online source that provide accurate information on the

economic behaviors of 196 countries worldwide, reported that as of October 2015, 22.6
percent of unemployed Filipinos were college graduates, 13.3 percent were college
undergraduates, and 43.6 percent were high school graduates. This goes to say that
educational attainment is not the only guarantee to landing a job, let alone a good job, in
the future. One’s career track should also be aligned with local and global work
demands so that one remains relevant by time he/she completes his/her educational
preparation and is ready to face the world of work.

Local and Global Work Demand

The local and global markets today require skills and competencies that respond
to changing, multitasking, and highly demanding work environment. The competition for

28
job search is high especially when there are more aspirants than opportunities. There
are several factors that job seekers pay attention to in order to successfully land good
jobs.

 Educational. In a world turn by information, education is one of the keys factor in

acquiring employment that will offer competitive benefit package and intrinsic
reward. The higher one’s educational attainment is, the higher his/her opportunity
to get employed. A few years ago, local businesses like malls, food, chains and
the like only require a high school graduate to serve a as cashier or store
attendant. Nowadays, most employers prefer applicants with at least one or two
years of tertiary education. What more for high-paying jobs? Some big
corporations favor job seekers with impressive educational background in their
curriculum vitae because of the presumption that schools have trained them in
time management, effective communication, collaboration, or team effort, and
acquisition, organization, and application of information. Therefore, students
should invest in learning, for educational is considered one of the world’s most
expensive assets.

 Employability. It is not enough that one finishes a degree. He/she is expected to

possess the skills required for a given position. There are instances when some
candidates are rejected by employers because of the disparity between
educational status and training and skills required for actual jobs. An applicant
may be classifies as overqualified if his/her are insufficient for the job or
overqualified if his/her skills are overwhelmingly exceed the minimum
requirement. Any undue qualifications may discourage employers since they are
looking for the right match. Hence, students should understand the nature of
careers they wish to pursue so that they land in jobs that fits them in the future.
Special training, past employment experiences, and other unique qualifications
can also bolster one’s employability since employers favor well-rounded
candidates. Nonetheless, there are transferrable skills, which can be used in
almost any work such as:

 Basic literacy skills—reading, writing, and arithmetic: and
21st century skills—can be summarized as 4Cs—communication, collaboration,
creativity, and critical thinking.
Aside from education and employability, there has to be motivation on the part of
an applicant. Income may be the major consideration in seeking employment but
one is half-hearted on a given career, he/she will mostly end up unhappy or
unsatisfied. Know your passion. Take time to research on job trend. Study
Company profiles. Update your resume and write a good cover letter. Be
confident during interviews and present yourself in the most pleasing manner.
Most importantly, do not slack off when opportunity knocks.

important that you update yourself with accurate information on local and global
work demands so that you can prepare yourself in choosing the right academic
course or technical-vocational track crucial to your success and societal
progress. Understanding the bigger picture of how job opportunities change in a
given milieu will affect you choice, making your skills, training, and educational
attainment relevant in the future.

LEARNING ACTIVITIES:

Activity #2: When you were younger, you probably wanted or dreamed of different
careers. Perhaps you wish to be an astronaut, then later a firefighter, and so on.
Without giving much thought about what you really wanted to become, you already had
some dreams. Now, think about those early ambitions. Are they still the same or have
they changed over time? Use the space below to write or illustrate your dream career
then and now.

What I wanted to be then and why…

What I want to be now and why…
