Strategic Operations Management Assignment Topic

You are required to formulate a detailed, strategic plan to implement a revitalised


sustainable supply chain OR a re-engineered, sustainable business process (you
need to choose one or the other), for a selected service or product at your organisation or
within your department/division, provided that sufficient information can be obtained.

Important: ‘Sustainable’ requires consideration for financial effectiveness, as well as


social/human capital and environmental responsibility considerations.
Key Tasks:
• Provide an introduction to the organisation (and functional area/department, if that is
your focus) and the context in which it operates (so the reader understands the supply
chain or internal processes context);
• Include an introduction to the concept of sustainability (i.e. what aspects are considered
when discussing ‘sustainable supply chains’ or ‘sustainable business process)
• It is critical to evaluate the process or supply chain under review to compare and contrast
it with best practices, thereby establishing the need for it to be improved (in other words,
don’t fix something which is working well!).
• Develop a sustainable supply chain strategy plan or a re-engineered, sustainable
business process to interpret the practical operations, logistics and supply chain aspects
that are critical to the organisation.
• Include in this plan or process, evidence of life cycle thinking and risk management.
• Also include a short discussion on the role of sourcing/purchasing related to this
improvement plan or improved process.
• Describe and explain the best practice supply chain formulation or business process
using the tools and methods provided in the course. You can use multiple tools covered
in the course content or other academically-valid tools supported by the literature.
• Include some relevant benchmarks and examples of what can/has been done
associated with this improvement (in other words, contextualise and motivate the
opportunity by looking at what others have done). Ensure you use relevant literature
(academic journals, Google Scholar, etc.) to support your claims, approaches, etc.
• Conclude your assignment by discussing the benefits (short, medium and long-term) of
implementing these suggested principles within the organisation as a motivation to
convince top management to adopt the proposed practices.

The assignment should be 2400 - 2500 words (excluding relevant and adequate references) in
length and will be assessed by the course presenter(s).

Your assignment must start with an executive summary of around 300 words, which do
not count toward the maximum word count.

Please also ensure adequate checks are done for plagiarism/text-matching, as this is
checked for each assignment and severe penalties are instituted for
plagiarised/inadequately referenced content in line with the institution’s regulations.

SHOULD YOU NOT PASS AT FIRST – YOU WILL BE ALLOWED TO RESUBMIT WITHIN
TWO WEEKS OF RECEIVING YOUR FEEDBACK FOR A MAXIMUM OF A 50% PASS
MARK.
