X BIOLOGY - Worksheet III Our Environment

The document provides a biology lesson on ecosystems and the environment. It includes short answer questions about ecosystems, food chains, trophic levels, and human impacts such as ozone depletion and waste disposal. It asks students to identify processes in ecosystems, sequences of events, and effects of enhanced UV radiation. Students are asked to suggest methods to reduce waste and explain why aquariums need cleaning but ponds do not.

Very Short Answer Type Questions:-

In the following questions, two statements are given- one

labeled Assertion (A) and the other labelled Reason (R).Select the
correct answer to these questions from the codes (a),(b), (c) and (d )as
givenbelow:
(a) Both A and R are true, and Ris correct explanation of the assertion.

(b) Both A and R are true, but R is not the correct explanation of the assertion.

(c) A is true, but R is false.

(d) A is false,but R is true.

1. Assertion :An ecosystem is made of different types of community.

Reason :Ecosystem is community of different organisms that interact with each
otherand surroundings
2. Assertion: Polythene bags and plastic containers are non-biodegradable
substances.Reason: They can be broken down by microorganisms in natural simple
harmless substances
3. The two basic processes involved in an ecosystem are :
(a) cycling of materials and food chains
(b) energy flow and self-sustainability
(c) carbon cycle and biotic diversity
(d) cycling of materials and flow of energy
4. The role of fungi and bacteria in an ecosystem is to :
(a) increase the supply of nutrients
(b) increase the supply of energy
(c) release nutrients from dead organic matter
(d) increase the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere
5. Refer to the given events regarding thinning of ozone layer and arrange them
ina sequence.
I. Active chlorine is produced in presence of UV radiations.
II. CFCs are released in the air.
III. Ozone layer in the stratosphere become thin.
IV. CFCs enter from troposphere into stratosphere.
V. Use of CFCs in refrigerators and air conditioners as coolants.
VI. Active chlorine destroy ozone by converting it into oxygen
(a) (b)
V →→ II →→ I →→ VI→→IV →→ V →→ II →→ IV →→I →→VI →→
III III

(c) (d)
V→→ I →→ II →→ III→→VI →→ V →→ IV→→ II →→I →→ III →→
IV VI

ii) How Enhanced UV radiations would affect humans and other animals?

iii) Why is damage to the ozone layer a cause of concern? What steps
arebeing taken to limit this damage.

6. How can we help reducing the problem of waste disposal ? suggest any three methods.

7. (a) Draw an energy pyramid showing different trophic level. Explain why first
trophiclevel in a food chain is always a green plants.

(b) Decomposers are not given any space in the trophic level. Does it suggest they are
not needed in nature. Where can you place them in trophic level?

8. We do not clean ponds or lakes, but an aquarium needs to be cleaned. Why?

9. Given below is an energy flow diagram. Study it carefully and answer the following
questions :

a) How much energy (in units) will pass from grass to goat ?

b) How much energy (in units) will pass from goat to tiger ?

c) Which law operates during the transfer of energy from grass to goat to tiger ?

d) Why food chain is limited up to 3-4 trophic levels.

10. Your uncle has come from the village to renew the contract to supply frogs to the
laboratories of the colleges of the town. While talking to you, he mentioned that
cases of malaria have increasedin his village. In addition, population of
grasshoppers has also increased that are damaging crops. What could be the
