Experiment:
To behavior of Zener diode in regulator applications.

Objective:
In our daily life, the sources that we use for our equipment and appliances are subject to
fluctuations. There are different reasons for that such as transient change in load or fault in
the parent source. In order to save our appliances and equipment from these fluctuations in
voltages, we use a component known as Zener diode in order to provide a constant voltage to
the load, whatever the input. In this lab experiment, we will see its working and significance.

Equipment:
 Zener diode
 Resistor (1000Ω)
 Breadboard
 Power supply
 Connecting wires
 DMM

Procedure:
 Take the equipment from the lab attendant and connect the component with each
other as shown in figure.
 Firstly, calibrate the oscilloscope before use.
 Now connect the circuit with the signal generator and set the amplitude.
 Connect the oscilloscope across the resistor to study the behavior of diode as half
wave rectifier.
 The channel 1 shows the pure sine wave provided by the signal generator and the
channel 2 shows the wave without negative component coming out from the diode.
 The same process will be done on software.
 Make the circuit as made before using the values same used in hardware
implementation.
 The same waveform will appear in digital oscilloscope.
Test Setup:

Factors that create difference in calculated and measured values:

 Resistance of the connecting wires
 Environmental factors
 Tolerance factor of resistance
 Human error
Software Implementation:

Iz (Zener current) Vz (Zener voltage) Input Voltage

0.5 mA 5.93 6.5
1 mA 5.94 7
2 mA 5.95 8
3 mA 5.96 9
4 mA 5.97 10
6 mA 5.98 12
8 mA 5.98 14

Conclusion:
Zener diode finds its applications in safety equipment mostly in stabilizers. We observed its
most basic circuit. Although it is not simply used as this but we can get a good idea of how it
works. It is a very useful and well-known semiconductor device.
