Method Statement On Bore Piling
Method Statement On Bore Piling
PURPOSE
This Method Statement aims to detail exactly how Bore Piling is done. The proper procedure is observed so that no
activity or inspection is neglected during the implementation of the project. That this Method Statement assures the
owner that Contractor is dedicated to the Quality of the finished Project to meet the demand of the owner.
SCOPE
This Method Statement includes piling bore, cage reinforcement, flushing, pile concreting, and Testing and Inspection.
PROCEDURE
1. Before the Bore Piling work starts, reviewing drawings is a must. If no available drawing is provided, then the
shop drawing has to be submitted to the Client for review and approval. The shop drawings must provide all
the details such as exact locations, pile dimensions, rebar sizes, load test, and compressive strength of
concrete.
2. Taking samples of materials is the very first thing to do before fabrication of Cage Reinforcement. Inform the
Construction Department to prepare all materials at the stockyard and warehouse for sample taking. When
the materials are readily available prepare RFIA for the Client Engineer to witness the taking of samples. After
all the materials had been sampled then they will bring to the approved Independent Testing Laboratory. Wait
for the results, if all the results have passed the National and International Standard then proceed to the next
stage of activity.
When taking samples here are guidelines to follow:
• Sand- when taking samples do it in a staggered manner, shovel in each corner from top to bottom to
assure that all the characteristics of sand had been sampled. Sample material must be at least half a
sack (25kg).
While the project is ongoing materials are to be monitored and recorded and if a certain volume is
used/consumed as per project requirements then it must be sampled again and tested to assure the
quality of the materials are meet until the end of the project.
For sand Quality Test, Grading Test and others that the project requires are to be laboratory tested
always.

• Cement – Purchase several brands of Portland Type I Cement and sample each brand. Here are
some tips to identify that the material is new and of quality:
a. Date of Packing
Take at least 3-5 kilos sample of every brand of Cement and to be witnessed by Client Engineer and
be brought at the approved testing laboratory. More than one Cement brand needs to be sampled to
assure the contractor that at least one will pass the project requirements and construction would
start. While work is going on, take other cement brand samples to the testing laboratory to verify if it
meets the project requirements. On projects it is better to use more than two brands of cement
because of the supply in the area.
And when brought to the testing laboratory mention the material name and Portland Cement Type
(Brand Name).
While the project is ongoing materials are to be monitored and recorded and if a certain volume or
bags is used/consumed as per project requirements then it must be sampled again for testing to assure
the quality of the materials are meet until the end of the project.

For cement Quality Test and others that the project requires are to be laboratory tested always.
• Rebars - Regarding deformed rebars only use what is mentioned on the drawing provided or project
specifications. In identifying the size, you have to check the diameter size engraved on the rebar itself
or by using a caliper.
Deformed bars must be sampled, cut at least 1m in length of each grade type and size and cut 3 pcs
each per size for Quality Test (tension, bending and chemical) or whichever project specification
requires and bring to the approved testing laboratory.
While the project is ongoing materials are to be monitored and recorded and if a certain weight is
used/consumed as per project requirement then it must be sampled again and tested while the
project progresses to assure the quality of the materials are met until the end of the project.

• Water – The sample water source for PH level for any contaminants.
While the samples are being tested by the Independent Testing Laboratory ask for Calibration
Certificates of all equipment. Coordinate with the approved Independent Testing Laboratories and
take a copy of all their updated equipment's calibration certificates for the following:
3. Approval of Mix Design for Box Culvert, Invert, and wall lining:
• For concrete to be mixed at the site using a transit mixer, prepare a trial concrete mix and take samples
for compressive tests. The samples shall be brought to the testing laboratory for 7days or 14 days of
testing (compressive). If the trial mix passed the project requirement, then record the design mix, and
finalize it and submit it to Client Engineer for approval. If Client Engineer requires to make a trial
concrete mix before pouring, then prepare RFIA for them to witness the sample taking of at least 3
pcs cube/cylinder samples based on the design mix strength.
And if the sample reaches 7days or 14 days old then RFIA is to be prepared for the client to witness
the testing at the laboratory of the samples to verify the concrete strength submitted. The average
result must be 85% of the required concrete strength is meet.
• For Batching plant at site, the technician shall be responsible for monitoring the exact volume of sand,
gravel, water, and admixtures to the mixer as per the requirement provided by the contractor’s QA/QC
to meet the compressive strength. If site batching plant is to be used, then submit to the Client
Engineer the proposed mix design for approval.
Then prepare RFIA for them to witness the sample taking of at least 3 pcs cube/cylinder samples based
on the design mix strength.
And if the sample reaches 7days or 14 days old then RFIA is to be prepared for the client to witness
the testing at the laboratory of the samples to verify the concrete strength submitted. The average
result must be 85% of the required concrete strength is meet.
4. If drawings are available or shop drawings had been approved and materials had been tested, then excavation
and fabrication of Cage Reinforcement can proceed.
5. When the cage reinforcement is complete then inform QA/QC Department to prepare RFIA for inspection. The
QA/QC will inform the Client Engineer for the inspection for the pile rebars. If the pile rebars are inspected
and approved then the cage reinforcement can be installed in a finish bore pile.

6. While materials are being tested and shop drawings are approved or IFC drawing is complete then proceed
for excavation using the Bored Pile Drilling Rig. The surveyor needs to locate the location and level of the Pile,
the surveyor will make four reference points for each pile, making two lines perpendicular to each other should
be marked for checking the center of the bore pile during excavation and boring of the pile. The Site Engineer
must always monitor the centerline mark by the surveyor and reference point in aligning the auger before the
start of excavation.
7. Casing
Suggested requirement for pile boring casing if not mention on drawings or in project specification.

10. While the casing is being hammered checking the verticality must be closely monitored to assure the
alignment if boring is in progress.
11. After the casing has been installed living 1.0m-1.5m above the ground, surround the casing with a soil bund
wall so that if bentonite will be released then the water with slurry will not overflow in surrounding areas
maximizing the bentonite at a certain pipe bored.
12. Mixing of bentonite slurry with water and filling on the Tank or pool must be prepared before excavation.
Bentonite circulation channel will be made from borehole to bentonite tank and fresh bentonite slurry will be
pumped to the borehole through hose pipes. They must be mixed with the desired volume of water to attain
its required density to stabilize the sides of the borehole during drilling. Bentonite slurry of specified quality
should be circulated continuously during the boring process.
13. Bentonite slurry is pumped by high-pressure reciprocating pumps/ vertical pumps into the borehole and the
same is allowed to overflow on the borehole. The overflow slurry with bored mud/soil etc., that comes out
along with bentonite slurry will passed through channels and is collected in sediment tanks where sediments
settle and bentonite can be reused. If necessary, the bentonite may be passed through the de sander tank to
remove sand particles before it is reused.

14. While boring is ongoing the height and the soil and rock that is being excavated on boreholes is being checked
using the data from the Standard Penetration Test (SPT) level for Geologist to check the soil type and rock
type. The soil and rocks taken out from the area are closely monitored by the geologist to confirm the soil and
rock type on the data they had used during the design of bore pile height, diameter, concrete strength, and
rebar sizes. Using a long measuring tape with an additional weight attached at the tip of the tape is used to
measure the height bored.
15. The boring will continue until meeting the desired depth.

16. Upon completion of the borehole, the bottom of the borehole is thoroughly cleaned with the cleaning bucket
before recycling the bentonite. Then the height toe is measured to confirm the desired height if it meets the
drawing provided.
17. After the toe is cleaned then an inspection RFIA will be raised by QA/QC to check the bentonite slurry retained
at the bottom of the borehole to be witnessed by the Client Engineer to check the Marsh Cone Viscosity, pH
Value, Sand Content, and Density. The testing laboratory must do or by qualified staff the test and be
witnessed by the QA/QC and Client Engineer.
Bentonite is used to stabilize the sides of the borehole to prevent collapse and to prevent sludgy layers building
up at the bottom of borehole. The density of bentonite solution should be checked during boring operation to
ensure that the density is about 1.05 g/cc to 1.10 g/cc, marsh cone viscosity 30 to 40, and pH value 9.5 to 12.

18. Prefabricated reinforcement cage prepared as per the drawings and approved depths, is brought and kept
near pile location while boring is in progress. The QA/QC Engineer will prepare RFIA for the Client Engineer to
inspect the cage reinforcement before inserting into a pile bore excavated.
19. After the borehole inspection is approved, the reinforcement cage will be gently lifted and lowered by
crane/manually into the bored hole. Necessary concrete cover will be obtained by using the circular cover
blocks already made of the same strength as of pile.

20. If the reinforcement cage is very long i.e., not possible to handle in one lift, the cage will be lifted one by one
and spot welded at the joints, and then lowered inside the bored hole. It is to be checked whether the
reinforcement cage has reached up to the bottom of the borehole pile by measuring from the top of the cage
to the ground level and verifying on the drawings.
21. If one length of cage reinforcement is not enough and it requires 2 or more lengths of cage reinforcement,
then it can be connected with welding, or whichever is approved by the Client Engineer or what is on the
project specifications. If the Client Engineer requires an inspection of each joint before laying down on the pile
hole, then RFIA will be requested. QA/QC Engineer will inform the Client Engineer to check/inspect the joint
connections by welding or by any means, if approved then it can be laid down.
22. A tremie line with a 200 mm diameter tremie pipes in suitable lengths are to be lowered in the hole. The
operation is done by lowering one tremie pipe after another and connecting them threading to maintain water
tightness throughout its length till the gap between the pile base and Tremie is between75 – 100 mm. the
tremie pipe is locked/supported from the top to maintain the level and funnel is attached on top.
23. The tremie head to be provided to the tremie pipe for the flushing activity. The bore is flushed by fresh
bentonite slurry through the tremie head. The pumping for flushing is done by using a mud circulation pump.
Flushing will be done to remove all the loose sediments which might have accumulated on the founding strata.
Further, the flushing operation shall be continued till the consistency of inflowing and outflowing slurry is
similar.

24. After flushing is done then the QA/QC Engineer will raise an RFIA for inspection of borehole and cage
reinforcement. The QA/QC will inform the Client Engineer to inspect the readily available work at the site. The
following are the items to check:
• Diameter of borehole or diameter of casing - by measuring with tape the diameter of the case.
• Depth or height of the bore - by measuring with tape the height of the bore made. And conforming
with the geologist the reach height of each borehole.
• Cage Reinforcement – confirming the longitudinal and transverse bars diameter, grade of steel, and
test reports. Checking the spacer provided if it is the approved material.
• Concrete Cover - checking the alignment of the cage reinforcement if it is in the middle providing equal
distance of concrete covers from the casing.
• Survey Report – mention the coordinates of the pile and finish level.
• Density of Bentonite – confirm the density of Bentonite to assure that it is lower than the density of
fresh concrete.
• Concrete Mix Design - verifying the required compressive strength.
25. Checking the density of fluid at the bottom is a must assure that the density is lower than the concrete density.
26. After the cage reinforcement and borehole inspection is approved then concreting may proceed. The Site
Engineer should plan for the traffic route of the concrete mixer going to the pile hole and exit way of the
concrete mixer and where the standby trucks are located while waiting for their turn. The QA/QC Engineer
will monitor the time covered by the truck from batching plant until pouring in the pile hole.
27. The concrete placing shall not proceed if the density of fluid near the bottom of the borehole exceeds 1250
kg/m3. This is done by comparing it to the sample taken after cleaning mud at the bottom of the pile.
28. After flushing is completed, the tremie head should be removed and the funnel should be attached to the
tremie pipe. The concrete operation will be carried out using the 200 mm diameter tremie pipes.
29. If the first truck arrived at the site, the testing laboratory technician or assigned staff will check the slump,
temperature, and time from batching plant to the site and take 3 concrete specimens for testing on 3 days, 7
days, and 28 days. The QA/QC Engineer and Client Engineer may or may not witness the activity of taking
samples of concrete before pouring.

30. After 7 days, 14 days and 28 days the QA/QC Engineer will prepare RFIA for the Client Engineer to witness the
compressive strength testing at the Laboratory.
31. Initial charge of concrete should be given in the funnel using a plug. The total concrete quantity in the funnel
should be more than the volume of the entire pipe plus free space below the tremie. This will ensure a water-
tight concrete pouring through tremie.
32. Lifting and lowering are repeated keeping sufficient concrete in the funnel all the time. As the concreting
proceeds, the tremie pipe is to be removed one by one, taking care that the tremie pipe has sufficient
embedment in the concrete until the whole pipe is concreted. A sufficient head of green concrete shall be

maintained to prevent the inflow of soil or water into concrete. Placing of concrete shall be a continuous
process from the toe level to the top of the pile.
33. The concrete is poured into the funnel. As the concrete reaches the top of the funnel, the plug is lifted to allow
the concrete to flow corresponding to the placing of each batch of concrete.
34. The concreting of the pile is to be done up to a minimum of 300 mm above the cut-off level to get good and
sound concrete at the cut-off level.
35. After completion of concreting the tremie, funnel, and other accessories are to be washed properly and kept
greased in proper stacking condition near the next pile location.
36. After filling the complete height with concrete of the pile and bentonite slurry with mud are seen at the top
part area of the pile concreted then remove the bentonite slurry with mud until all are cleaned.

37. After concrete pouring, then casing may retain or will be removed considering the ground and groundwater
pressures and as per project specifications.
High Strain Dynamic - Dynamic testing of piles based on the analysis of the one-dimensional waves generated
when the pile was hit by a hammer. Strain and accelerometer during driving are measured using a strain
transducer and accelerometer. Two strain transducers and two accelerometers are attached to the upper part
of the tested piles (minimum > diameter from pile top).

The installation of two instruments for each measurement was intended to ensure good records and as an
additional measure in case one of the instruments is not working properly.
The measurements are recorded by ‘PDA’ and analyzed with the well-known ‘Case Method’, based on one-
dimensional wave theory.
a. If a permanent casing is not used to construct the shaft, then prepare a shaft top extension consisting
of a thin-walled casing or equivalent shall be used to extend the shaft by a length at least equal to two
and a half (2 ½) pile diameters such that the extended pile head is readily accessible by the testing
engineer at the time of the test. If the shaft top is below grade, then the Contractor must have
equipment available to remove surrounding soil (creating a safe working environment) to expose the
concrete. A shaft top cushion consisting of plywood with a total thickness between 2 to 6 inches (50
to 150 mm), or as determined by the Engineer. For cast-in-place piles, integrity testing shall not be
performed until the concrete has cured for a minimum of seven (7) days unless otherwise approved
by the Engineer. The pile head shall be free from water, dirt, or other debris. The concrete at the pile
top surface must be relatively smooth with sufficient space for both attachments of the motion
sensing device and hammer impact area.
b. To ensure flat, level (axial to the shaft), and sound concrete shaft top. Concrete should be on a level
with, or above the casing. Before the test, prepare four “windows” or as prescribed by the Client
Engineer
approximately size of 6 inches by 6 inches (150 mm by 150 mm) shall be provided at each quadrant if
the pile is with casing but if not then on the concrete pile wall. This is to be done by an independent
testing laboratory with experience in such kind of testing.
c. Install strain transducers at the neutral axis and accelerometers that are attached at the diametrically
opposite location. The strain transducers and accelerometers are attached to PDA Machine by
connecting cables which will record the force/velocity wave traces according to the reaction
of the pile.

d. The crane or equivalent equipment should be in position near the pile to be tested and the drop
hammer weight ranges from one and a half to two percent (1.5% to 2%) of the anticipated pile
capacity, or as determined by the Client Engineer. A guide allowing variable drop heights typically
between 2 to 3 m, or as determined by the Engineer.
e. The surveyor must be monitoring the pile settlement for each blow and recording the data. Usually,
2-3 blows are conducted or whichever the Client Engineer/ Project Specification requires.

f. The data report gathered will be prepared by an Independent Testing Laboratory Specialist who shall
submit a timely report of the testing results to the Contractor QA/QC Engineer and copy furnish it to
the Client Engineer. The field results from at least one (CAPWAP) analysis (case Pile Wave Analysis
Program) shall be submitted. The CAPWAP analysis shall be performed by an Independent Testing
Laboratory Engineer that has achieved an advanced or better level on the foundation QA examination
as a provider of PDA Testing Services. The report must also provide the following:
• Wave Equation analysis results obtained before testing.
• CAPWAP analysis result.
• For each impact the maximum measured force, maximum calculated tension force,
transferred energy to the gage location, corresponding stresses, and the Case Method bearing
capacity.
• Assessment of the test result concerning both pile capacity and integrity.
g. If a majority of piles are diagnosed as “inconclusive”, partial or even complete pile excavation or
another test method may be necessary for pile acceptance. If the pile top appears questionable,
further pile top cut-off and retesting may be advisable. If a majority of piles are diagnosed as
“inconclusive”, partial or even complete pile excavation or another test method may be necessary for
pile acceptance.
For rejected piles, the Contractor shall propose review and approval of the Client Engineer. Such
proposal shall include the necessary design calculations, the methodology he intends to implement,
equipment, and other items as may be necessary. Approval of these proposals however does not
relieve the Contractor of contractual responsibilities for any defects as a result of the proposals. The
cost of further tests required, remedial measures, and replacement of rejected piles shall be borne by
the Contractor.
Low Strain Dynamic Testing - Pile integrity testing by Low-Strain Dynamic Method shall conform to ASTM
D 5882. It is the so-called Low Strain Method, since it requires the impact of only a small hand-held
hammer and is also referred to as a Non-Destructive Method.
a. For cast-in-place piles, integrity testing shall not be performed until the concrete has cured for a
minimum of seven (7) days unless otherwise approved by the Client Engineer. The pile head shall be
free from water, dirt, or other debris. The concrete at the pile top surface must be relatively smooth
with sufficient space for both attachments of the motion sensing device and hammer impact area.

b. The test shall be performed using digital data acquisition equipment. The signal conditioning and
power supply must have very high signal-to-noise ratios since the reflected signals for long piles (or
piles in high friction soils) are often very weak. The analog to a digital resolution shall be at least 16
bits and the sampling frequency at least 40,000 Hz. Data should be stored such that additional
processing or further wave analysis is possible. The data must be displayed in the field for evaluations
of preliminary data quality and interpretation.
c. Fifty percent (50%) of all piles shall be integrity tested unless otherwise approved by the Client
Engineer.
d. Place the motion sensor near the pile head using a suitable, or temporary, thin layer of the bonding
material (wax, Vaseline, putty, etc.) so that is assured that it correctly measures the axial pile motion
(transducer axis of sensibility aligned with the pile axis).
e. The motion sensor is placed generally near the center of the pile. Additional locations for piles with
greater diameters.
f. If the motion sensor is placed in the desired location, then the Independent Testing Laboratory
technician will do the test and be witnessed by the Contractor Engineer and Client Engineer. A hammer
is used to beat near the sensor no more than 300mm and a signal will be generated on the Pile Integrity
Tester machine and recorded.
g. Motion sensor should be always perpendicular to the pile axis and do not place the sensor near the
edge of the pile to have an accurate test result.
h. Do 3 tests per pile and 3 blows per sensor location or unless otherwise approved by the Client
Engineer. The bigger the diameter of the pile the bigger the hammer to be used the smaller the pile
diameter the smaller hammer will be used considering the impact when doing the test.
i. The data report gathered will be prepared by an Independent Testing Laboratory Specialist appointed
by the Contractor who shall submit a timely report of the testing results to the Contractor Engineer
and be submitted to the Client Engineer for approval.
Such
proposal shall include the necessary design calculations, the methodology he intends to implement,
equipment, and other, items as may be necessary. Approval of these proposals however does not
relieve the Contractor of contractual responsibilities for any defects as a result of the proposals. The

Cross Hole Sonic Logging Test - By sending ultrasonic pulses through the concrete from one probe to another
(probes located in parallel tubes), the Cross hole Sonic Logging ( CSL) procedure inspects the drilled shaft
structural integrity, and extent and location of defects, if any. At the receiver probe, pulse arrival time and
signal of the concrete affect’s strength. For equidistant tubes, uniform concrete yields consistent arrival times
with reasonable pulse wave speed and signal strengths. Non-uniformities such as contamination, soft
concrete, honeycombing, voids, or intrusions of foreign objects exhibit delayed arrival time with reduced
signal strength.
a. When the reinforcement cage is being assembled then a minimum of 3 pcs of PVC tubes or equivalent
with a diameter of 50mm to 75mm is attached and tied properly on reinforcement to be used when
CSL testing will be conducted after pile concreting with end and top cap to avoid water, concrete and
slurry will get inside the pipe. The external surface of the PVC tubes must be fully roughened by
abrasion before installation or tie on the bar reinforcement to ensure a good bond between the PVC
tube exterior surface and the concrete.

b. After 3 to 7 days of concrete test can proceed unless otherwise approved by the Client Engineer. In
the case that PVC tubes are used it is better to do the test as early as possible to assure the bonding
between the PVC and concrete is still intact. The Contractor QA/QC will prepare RFIA and be witnessed
by the Client Engineer.
c. The access ducts shall be exposed, and the protective top cap shall be removed during testing.
Preferably, use a weighted measuring tape to measure and record the access duct length. Assign a
systematic reference label for each access duct and prepare a reference sketch of the access layout
duct using a magnetic compass or plan diagram. If the access duct (PVC) is blocked, record the length
from the blocked access duct to the reference label set. Use another access duct if one duct is blocked
then continue the test if the Client Engineer has doubts then another test may consider.
d. Then the access duct shall be filled with clean water. On one of the accesses, ducts are the transmitter
and the receiver on the opposite access duct which is connected to the Cross Hole Analyzer (CHAMP)
machine. The experienced/trained Independent Testing Laboratory Technician will be reading and
recording the data transmitted by the transmitter and the receiver to the CHAMP machine.
e. Begin recording the ultrasonic pulses as the probes are raised. Pull both probes cable steadily and
simultaneously at a slow speed enough to capture the ultrasonic pulse for each depth interval
specified. If an ultrasonic pulse is not obtained for any depth interval, then the probes shall be lowered
to the point where the ultrasonic pulse cannot be detected and repeat the reading until gathering the
desired result. Data collection in some systems may proceed with one probe from the top and the

other from the bottom, or both probes will be from the bottom or the top. In some cases, it is
advantageous to place probes at different levels during pulling.
f. For Single Hole Sonic Test, the transmitter probe and receiver probe shall be fixed at each other at a
preset vertical separation. The vertical separation may be increased to scan a larger radius around the
access duct. This will, however, reduce the measure of profile length and detection resolution.
g. Place the probe cable pulley guide into a single access duct (PVC or equivalent). Insert both probes
into this duct, then if the choice of the Client Engineer will start recording the result from top to
bottom or from bottom to top. Do the same by pulling or releasing the cable slowly and recording the
ultrasonic pulse detected by the CHAMP Machine.
h. The data report gathered will be prepared by an Independent Testing Laboratory Specialist appointed
by the Contractor shall submit a timely report of the testing results to the Contractor Engineer and be
submitted to the Client Engineer for approval.
i. If a majority of piles are diagnosed as “inconclusive”, partial or even complete pile excavation or
another test method may be necessary for pile acceptance. If the pile top appears questionable,
further pile top cut-off and retesting may be advisable. For rejected piles, the Contractor shall propose
other method of testing and submit to Client Engineer for review and approval. Such proposal shall
include the necessary design calculations, the methodology he intends to implement, equipment, and
other items as may be necessary. Approval of these proposals however does not relieve the Contractor
of contractual responsibilities for any defects as a result of the proposals. The cost of further tests
required, remedial measures, and replacement of rejected piles shall be borne by the Contractor.

Static Pile Compression Testing - This test load shall consist of the application of incremental static loads to
a pile and measuring the resultant settlement. The loads shall be applied by the hydraulic jack acting against
suitable anchorage transmitting the load directly to the pile, or other methods designated by the Plans or by
the Client Engineer.
a. Assemble the testing set up using the Kentledge system as shown in the diagram with sufficient care
when stacking and placing the I‐beams the geometry of the arrangement should also aim to minimize
interaction between the test pile, reaction system, and reference beam supports. Allow a 10% to 20%
margin on the capacity of the reaction against the maximum test load. Install two or more reaction

piles, or anchors, for the reaction frame after the installation of the test pile. For driven piles, locate
these reaction piles not less than (3 m) or the sum of 5 reaction pile diameters and 5 test pile diameters
(whichever of the two criteria is the greater distance) from the test pile or reference beam supports.
For drilled shafts or micro piles, locate these reaction piles, not less than (3 m) or 5 reaction pile
diameters (whichever of the two criteria is the greater distance) from the test pile or reference beam
supports. These distances are measured between the faces of the test pile and reaction piles. Anchors,
if used, must be designed with sufficient free length so as not to interfere with the load test pile or
the reference system. Design the reaction frame and reaction piles to resist four times the pile design
load indicated in the contract documents without undergoing a magnitude of deflection exceeding 75
percent of the maximum travel of the jack.
b. A hydraulic jack reacting against a set of steel beams tied to anchor piles is placed.
c. Fix (4 or 2) nos. Dial gauges on an independent ‘frame’ to measure the pile head displacement.

d. When the frame and the floor support are set start loading with concrete blocks with known weight
value per block or equivalent on top of the frame. Loading capacity shall be based on the project
specification. Attached is table ASTM D1144-07 to follow on how many percent is to be added to the
designed load of the pile.
e. When the concrete blocks or equivalent are loaded on top of the frame on a certain percentage the
QA/QC will submit an RFIA to the Client Engineer to witness the testing. For sandy soils, the test may
last for a day, and for silt soils or soft clay, the test may last for a month or whichever project
specification requires or as the Client Engineer may require.
f. Movement of the pile head shall be measured using the dial gauge and checked with a leveling
instrument and scale rules fixed to their holders. The scale rule shall have an accuracy of 1mm, visually
interpretable to 0.5mm.
g. All testing equipment shall be protected from unnecessary disturbance before and throughout the
load test.
h. Records shall be kept promptly throughout the testing period. A copy shall be extended to the Client
Engineer at the end of the test for review and approval.

39. After finalizing which pile testing will be used and the equipment’s and tools are set in the site area then RFIA
will be raised for Client Engineer to inspect a pile set for testing.
40. If the pile testing is satisfactory then proceed to the next activity.
