joints.
To design press-connect joints, Equations 3-1, 3-2, 3-3, 3-4 and 3-5 (see
section 3.2.6) can be used (also see Figure 3-1a).
(a) (b)
Example 3-1 shows use of the graphical method for rough calculation of the
minimum interference.

3- Press-Connect Joints
Solution:
1. First we find the ratio of inner diameter to outer diameter (a) for
both the shaft and hub:
𝑑𝑖 30
𝑎1 = = = 0.5
{ 𝑑 60
𝑑 60
𝑎2 = = = 0.4
𝐷 150
Then, we find the value of k0 from Figure 3-2.
2. On the top left horizontal axis which is for “steel and steel
𝑑𝑖
materials”, we locate = 0.5 and go up to cross the curve of
𝑑
d
=0.4. We go left to obtain the corresponding k0, that is:
D
k0 = 0.33
3. On the left horizontal axis of Figure 3-3, we select T = 40 kg.m and
go up to reach the curve related to d = 60 mm. From the point of
intersection, we go right to cross the curve associated with k0 = 0.33.
Then, going down to reach the right horizontal axis gives us the
minimum interference fit:
∆min = 10 μm

Figure 3-2: a graph for estimating the parameter k0 (The shaft is made of
steel and the hub is made of different materials as shown in the figure)
Note: If the roughness of the contact area between the hub and the shaft
is equal to Rz1 and Rz2 respectively, consider the minimum desired
interference equal to:
∆𝑚𝑖𝑛 = 10 𝜇𝑚 + 𝑅𝑧1 + 𝑅𝑧2
