Criterion 9: Industrial Linkages

Industrial linkages play a crucial role in the success of any educational program. They not only
facilitate the employment of fresh graduates but also enable the curriculum to be regularly
updated to align with industry demands. Furthermore, students benefit greatly from engagement
with the industry through various means such as industrial visits, internships, and projects. To
ensure effective industrial linkages, the LGU has established dedicated offices and bodies with
specific responsibilities in this area. These entities aim to foster collaboration between academia
and industry, facilitate industry-driven research, and provide guidance and support to students
seeking industry exposure. Through these initiatives, students are better prepared for the job
market, and educational programs are better aligned with the evolving needs of the industry.

9.1 Existence of an Active Industrial Advisory Board/Committee


LGU has an active Industrial Advisory Board which helps the university to keep its curriculum
up to date with the requirements of industry and social requirements. IAB is comprised of
industrial representatives and alumni members who update the department about the current
trends in the industry as well as advise the department on matters of educational objectives and
curriculum revision. The board members comprise of representatives from the industry, alumni,
Dean, HOD, senior faculty members, and department industry liaison officer. The IAB was
constituted on 28 Feb 2023 and further new members were included and the list of IAB member
was updated. The initial constitution and reformation notification along with updated list of
industrial advisory board members is attached as attached in Annex-9A.

9.8.1 Industrial Advisory Board Meetings:

The department of CS conducts IAB meetings on regular basis once per semester (Hard copies
of the IAB meetings held can be provided on demand).

The focal person writes to the IAB members for a possible date and timings.
• After finalizing date and timing, the department intimates the same to the faculty
members.
• An IAB meeting is held on campus venue as per schedule.
• During the IAB meeting, minutes are noted and are circulated to the faculty members as
well as to the industry members.
• The progress of actions suggested in the previous IAB meetings are presented as an
agenda point.
• Further new suggestion by IAB is noted as new suggested action.
• A DBS is held to discuss the follow ups and their recommendations, suggestions and
action recommended by to the industry.

9.2 The 2nd Industrial Advisory Board (IAB) Meeting

On 23rd Oct 2023, the Industrial Advisory Board (IAB) Meeting took place at 1100 hours. The
venue for the meeting was the Usman Shaukat Hall, LGU, and Conference Room, located
within the Lahore Garrison University (LGU). List of participants who attended the 2th IAB
meeting along with their attendance is attached in Annex- 9B.

9.2.2 Agenda of meeting

The meeting of Industrial Advisory Board (IAB) in pursuance of review of the Program Educational
Objectives (PEO) and their impact on students for successful careers in Computer Science. Following
are the PEOs of Computer Science Department that were approved by the Industrial Experts.

esteemed guests, for sparing time from their busy schedules to
attend. He explained the purpose of the meeting and shared the
agenda. The Chairman invited members to share their insights and
expertise related to the agenda.

improvements to the PEOs.

Dr. Arfan Ali Nagra suggested the placement of PEO 3 should


be at PEO 1, due to it highlights the introduction to the
technologies and PEO 3 applies the concept attained in subjects
to computing and emerging technologies.

Dr. Waseem Ahmad Khan from Shahruh Tec commented to


update PEO 4 such that PEO 4 provides problem solving skills
for advancing in higher studies.

Dr. Hadi Abdullah moved to plan an action to revise and update


current PEOs according to the suggestions provided by IAB
members.

3. Awais Aslam recommended enriching the curriculum of
Professional Practices with practical insights. He
suggested introducing sessions on ethical considerations
in the digital technology industry, along with related case
studies. Additionally, he proposed analyzing the anatomy
of software houses and fostering discussions on the
professional environment prevalent in digital tech
companies.
4. M. Asjid emphasized hands-on learning in CSC 3910 by
focusing on practical exercises related to computer
vision. He suggested covering topics like ResNets and
guiding students through building their own Residual
Blocks from scratch. Furthermore, he recommended
incorporating projects involving video classification and
model deployment to reinforce theoretical concepts.
5. Umair Nasir proposed incorporating practical exercises
in CSC313 focused on data structures and algorithms. He
recommended including hands-on assignments covering
sorting algorithms such as Insertion sort, Quick sort,
Bucket sort, Radix sort, and Shell sort. His suggestion
aimed to reinforce theoretical concepts with practical
implementation, providing students with valuable
problem-solving skills.
6. Waqas Riaz proposed a practical approach to teaching
Cloud Computing in CSC382. He suggested including
modules on installing vSphere components, such as
ESXi, and configuring essential services. Additionally,
he recommended covering OpenStack deployment,
emphasizing management aspects like compute, storage,
and network, along with orchestration and image
management.
7. Dr. Waseem Ahmad Khan proposed integrating practical
exercises in deep learning for CSC390. He recommended
working with eXplainable AI (XAI) on platforms like
Kaggle with real-world datasets. His suggestion aimed to
provide students with hands-on experience in working
with advanced deep learning techniques.
8. Awais Aslam suggested enhancing the curriculum of
CSC394 with practical web development projects. He
recommended developing web applications using tools
like Visual Studio 2019 & 2022, focusing on converting
admin themes into Model-View-Controller (MVC)
architecture. Additionally, he proposed covering server-
side data submission using AJAX, along with concepts
like session management and cookies for secure login
modules.
9. Waqas Riaz recommended enriching the curriculum of
CSC368 with a variety of mobile application projects.
He proposed practical assignments such as developing
XML layouts for Android and creating applications like
the Dogglers App, Lunch Tray app, Amphibians app,
and Forage app. His suggestion aimed to provide
students with diverse hands-on experience in mobile app
development across different domains.

Dr. Arfan Ali Nagra thanked all the attendees for their valuable
contribution and feedback.

9.3 Formal mechanism for seeking feedback from the Industry and its analysis
for the attainment of PEOs.
A proper mechanism is in place through which feedback is collected from the industry, where
the industry can be from the IAB members and other industries linked directly with the CS
curriculum. Later, an analysis is performed, and corrective measures are taken periodically.
Organogram of a formal mechanism for seeking feedback is discussed in Criteria 1. A Process
to evaluate the Attainment of PEOs is described in Figure 9-4.

9.8.3 Disseminating Forms


A form is created which carries all the questions required to cover every aspect. The feedback
form is used for ease and convenience for industry as well as for Institution. After creating the
form, we reach out to the industry through request emails and disseminate the forms. After
request email to Industry personnel we again reach out through Text messages and Calls.

9.3.2 Collecting Feedback


Industry personnel fill up the provided form, give their feedback and is received by the focal
persons for CQI.

9.3.3 Analysis Performed


A thorough analysis is performed of the feedback given by the industry personnel. Every
question is taken into consideration and analysis is performed on every question. Top rated and
least rated attributes are identified through analysis.
9.3.4 IAB Suggested Corrective Measures
Corrective measures are taken on the areas/attributes identified in the analysis as well as IAB
meetings. We arrange seminars, workshops for the students to brief them about the areas where
extensive hard work is required and practical skill development workshops are arranged if
needed, identified in the analysis. Apart from the on-campus activities, industry visits are also
conducted as stated in Table below.

9.3.5 Alumni Affairs
The role of this department is to build and maintain lifelong relations with NUST Alumni
to seek active feedback from recent and experienced graduates. This is important not only
for supporting graduate employability but also for effective up-gradation of the course
curriculum. At LGU, the liaison office is dealing with Alumni Affairs.

9.3.6 Alumni Survey Form


The purpose of this survey is to obtain alumni input on the quality of education they
received at LGU. We seek Alumni help in completing the survey using Alumni Survey
Form.

9.3.7 Employer Survey Form


The purpose of this survey is to obtain Industrial Employer input on the quality of education
students receive at LGU. We seek employer help in completing the survey using google
form.

Industrial liaison officer sends these forms to the alumni as well as the employers. ILO
ensures maximum feedback from the employers and the alumni to carry out an analysis of
the different attributes.

9.4 KPIs for PEO Analysis and Related Assessment Tools

9.4.1 Program Education Objectives (PEOs)


The evaluation of our program's educational outcomes encompasses several key components,
including the employment history of our graduates, feedback from employers and alumni through
surveys, and input gathered during accreditation visits by the PEC team. We maintain and regularly
update records of our graduates' employment status to ensure accuracy and relevance.

Criteria 1 provides a detailed overview of the mechanisms and Program Educational Outcomes
(PEOs).

➢ Annual alumni surveys are conducted regularly, and the data is analyzed to identify areas
for improvement in our processes.

➢ Both employers and alumni are encouraged to participate in surveys to provide valuable
feedback on whether the program objectives are being achieved.

➢ We organize Industrial Advisory Board (IAB) meetings to gather insights from industry
representatives, which helps us refine our curriculum to meet industry needs.

➢ Open house events are held annually, providing industry representatives with opportunities
to offer feedback on final-year projects and conduct interviews with graduating students
for potential employment.

➢ A yearly analysis is conducted, and any suggested enhancements are discussed within
relevant departments and subsequently integrated into our program.

9.4.2 Latest PEOs

PEO-1: To introduce technology-oriented courses, facilitate research, promote new business ideas,
and enhance computing skills.
PEO-2: To inculcate presentation, communication, entrepreneurial, and leadership skills along with
moral and social values.
PEO-3: To comprehend and apply concepts of various subjects in integration with computing &
emerging technologies to design and implement robust solutions of complex real-world
problems.
PEO-4: To develop critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving capabilities for pursuing
higher studies.

9.5 Existence of Industry Linkages Office:


The LGU Industrial Linkages Office (ILO) is responsible for establishing and nurturing
connections with the industry to facilitate the integration of LGU graduates into various sectors.
Additionally, it plays a pivotal role in identifying suitable industry partners for ongoing research
initiatives at LGU. By assessing industry requirements, the ILO can suggest pertinent industrial
challenges to LGU institutions.
Key Functions of the LGU Industrial Linkages Office (ILO) include:
• Facilitating connections with industry partners for ongoing research endeavors at LGU.
• Assessing industry needs and proposing relevant industrial challenges to LGU institutions.
• Direct involvement in commercialization activities to bridge academia-industry collaborations
effectively.
9.5.1 Job Placement Bureau Office:
The Job Placement Bureau offers a range of programs and services designed to guide students in
making informed career decisions and navigating their professional paths effectively. Regularly,
the bureau shares career opportunities with both current students and alumni. It organizes Career
Development Sessions and Recruitment Drives to facilitate connections between students and
potential employers. These initiatives not only help students build professional networks but also
assist employers in meeting their recruitment needs. The bureau provides various avenues for
personal and professional development, supporting students in achieving their career goals.
Internship opportunities are available to all students, with optional participation for those in their
first, second, and third years, while fourth-year students are required to undertake internships as
part of their curriculum.
9.5.2 Job Placement Bureau Dedicated ILO:

Within the Job Placement Bureau, a central Industrial Linkages Officer (ILO) holds a pivotal position. This
central ILO acts as a vital intermediary, bridging the gap between the industry and the Job Placement
Bureau, and facilitating communication and collaboration with external ILOs.

Key responsibilities of the central ILO include establishing and nurturing robust connections between the
industry and the Job Placement Bureau. This involves organizing and promoting various activities such as
conferences, seminars, recruitment drives, and industrial visits, all aimed at enriching the educational and
professional experiences of students within the Job Placement Bureau. Through effective coordination of
these initiatives, the central ILO ensures that students of the Job Placement Bureau have ample
opportunities to engage with industry professionals, gaining valuable insights and practical experience in
their respective fields.

9.5.3 Internship Feedback Form

The Internship Feedback Form is a crucial resource for employers to assess and evaluate students
who have completed internships within their organizations. Through this form, employers can
provide constructive feedback on various aspects of the intern's performance, including their skills,
work ethic, communication abilities, and overall contribution to the workplace. By completing the
Employer Feedback Form (Annex-9E), employers can share insights and observations regarding
the intern's strengths and areas for improvement. This structured framework enables the
educational institution and the student to glean valuable insights, thereby enhancing the
effectiveness of the internship program.

9.6 Guest Speakers and Seminars:


The ILO/Job Placement Bureau Office, in collaboration with the department, organizes seminars
and invites industry experts as guest speakers. These professionals, renowned in their respective
fields, provide valuable insights to educate students about the latest technologies and concepts
utilized in the telecommunications industry. Hard copies of invited speakers and their presentations
are readily available for reference.
