Materials of Instruction:
● Ukuleles
● 4/4 Backing Track
● Composition papers from previous class period
● Lime in the Coconutby Harry Nilsson recording
esson Sequence:

Activity #1 Objective:By the end of this activity,students will perform their original 8-beat
ukulele compositions for the class while maintaining a steady pulse with the aide of a backing
track in 4/4 time.
1. To begin the activity, students will retrieve their composition papers that were completed
the previous class period covering ukuleles.
2. Students will be instructed to sit in a circle while the teacher sits in the center.
3. Students will be given 1 minute to rehearse their compositions on their own to refresh
their memories.
4. The teacher will turn on the backing track and encourage students to internalize the pulse
by bobbing their head to the beat.
a. T: “Listen to the backing track and find the beat. Move your head with the beat!”
5. Students will individually perform their compositions for the class, moving throughout
the circle once each student has performed.
a. T: “We will all perform our compositions for each other. As soon as the person in
front of you starts playing, be ready to start in 8 beats!”
Assessment:Students will be assessed through teacherobservation and through the written
composition papers.
● S tudents will be assessed on their ability to perform their original compositions while
maintaining a steady pulse with the aide of a backing track in 4/4 time.
● The teacher will collect the composition papers to formally assess the students’
comprehension of the activity.
Transition:
● Students will be instructed to return to their assigned positions in the room.
○ T: “Quickly, quietly, and safely return to your dots, and we are going to move on
to our next activity!”
● The teacher will lead the class in a strumming activity, referencing back to the first day of
ukuleles when the class strummed open strings with various patterns. The following
patterns will be rehearsed:
○ Down, Down, Down, Down
○ Down, Down Up, Down, Down
○ Down, Down Up, Down, Down Up
○ Down Up, Down, Down Up, Down
Activity #2 Objective:By the end of this activity,students will be able to perform a C7 ukulele
accompaniment to “Lime in the Coconut” by Harry Nilsson utilizing various patterns of
strumming while maintaining a steady pulse.
● Students will be taught the C7 chord, using verbiage such as “floors” and “rooms” to
reference the strings and frets.
○ T: “We’re going to learn our first chord! Everyone hold up your left pointer finger.
Put that finger on room 1 of floor 1 (bottom string, first fret).”
● The teacher will lead a call and response activity using this new chord with various
strumming patterns.
● The teacher will project the song “Lime in the Coconut” by Harry Nilsson. Before
beginning the song, students will be given three different options for strumming, leaving
them to choose based on their level of comfort.
○ 1. Down strum on beat 1 and 3
○ 2. Down strum on every beat
○ 2. Down, Down Up, Down, Down Up
○ T: “Let’s play our first song! Before playing, listen carefully to your strumming
options. You get to choose whatever is most comfortable for you.”
● The class will play through “Lime in the Coconut” all together.
