Electricity and Magnetism 1.31.4 Answer Key

The document provides a science worksheet on potential difference, series and parallel circuits. It includes questions about circuit components, current, voltage, and the differences between series and parallel circuits. It asks students to identify circuit types, explain what happens when additional cells or bulbs are added to circuits, and describe the differences between current and potential difference.

Science Worksheet
Topic: Potential difference, Series and Parallel Circuits

YR:8

1. Choose the correct words.

A series circuit has more than one/one loop. A parallel circuit has more than
one/one loop. If a bulb in a parallel/series circuit breaks the rest of the bulbs stays
on. If a bulb in a parallel/series circuit breaks the rest of the bulbs go out.

Complete the sentence below.

2. The potential difference of a cell or battery tells you the size of the _voltage__, and how
much _charge_ can be transferred by the charges.
3. You measure potential difference or p.d with a ___voltmeter__.
4. The ____rating______ on a bulb tells you the potential difference at which it is designed
to work.
5. Name the meter which you use to measure potential difference.
Voltmeter
6. State the unit of potential difference.
Volts(V).
7. State what happens to the total current as you add more branches or loops in a parallel
circuit.
The total current increases.
8. State what happens to the current as you add more bulbs in a parallel circuit.
The total current flowing through the circuit increases. This is because each bulb
provides an additional pathway for the current to flow.
9. Match each keyword to its correct meaning, then write down the keyword with its definition.
10. Identify the circuit type and find out the voltage
a) Series Circuit

b) Parallel Circuit
11. Write any two differences between series and parallel circuits.
Series Parallel
1. There is only one path for the 1 There are multiple paths for
current to flow through all the the current to flow through
components in the circuit. the components in the circuit,
with each component
connected across the same
voltage source.
2. The current flowing through 2 The current flowing through
each component in a series each branch of the parallel
circuit is the same. circuit can be different.

12. A student connects a circuit with a cell, an ammeter and a buzzer and listens to the
buzzer. She adds another cell.
a) What happens to the current?
The current in the circuit increases.

13. The cell has a rating of 1.5V. The bulb has a rating of 3V.

a) What will happen if a 2.5 V cell is used instead?

The total voltage across the circuit will increase.
b) What will happen if a 6V cell is used?
Voltage increases but the bulb to a voltage higher than its rating can cause it to fail,
such as burning out or exploding.

14. What is the difference between current and potential difference?

Current is the flow of electric charge through a conductor per unit time. But Potential
difference or voltage is the difference in electric potential energy per unit charge between two
points in an electric circuit.

15. A cell connected to two bulbs in a series circuit will last longer than if it is connected to the
same two bulbs in parallel. Explain why this happens.
In a series circuit, the total resistance is higher compared to a parallel circuit with the same
components.
16. Only one of Mr Patel’s headlights is working on his car. Are the lights series or parallel?
Parallel.

17.

Look carefully at this circuit:

a) Which switches have to be closed for bulb A to come on? _____A____
b) Which bulbs will come on if you press switches 1 &3? _____A and C___
