LESSON NEURAL AND SOCIAL NETWORKS

Hello Senior High learners! In this lesson, you will learn to:
1. compare the neural networks with social networks; and
2. establish linkage between self and the social network one belongs to.

Hi there, before we proceed, let us first take time to reflect on this question.

 Does human brain functions like social networking?

The above question makes you ponder if our brain has the same function with
social networking. Try to remember your lesson in Neural Networks about connections
and networks; and connections and relationships to help you understand better about
this lesson.
With the rise of technology specifically computers, mobile phones, iPads and
the like makes a way for people to do their tasks easy, can communicate instantly and
do more on networking. In this day where we live in the world of computers, connecting
and socializing to people is within the click. Daily movements, even plans, materials
acquired, businesses, travels, goals and almost everything are put into their social
networking accounts like Facebook, as the most popular used social networking site.
This is the trends and the lifestyle that we have today and the years to come.

Discussion
What is Social Network?
A Social Network referred as virtual community or profile site is a website that
brings people together to talk, share ideas and interest, or make new friends. Thus,
social networking is an activity where people establish relationships with others
through accessing social networks to stay connected with family, friends, colleagues
and old classmates. Social Networking does not only limit to connecting to people but
there are other purposes of networking like marketing and promoting a business.
Some examples of the known sites that we use today are:
Facebook-most popular social networking website. Users create personal profile
and can connect with people, upload and share pictures, videos and
movies.
Instagram-a social networking platform for sharing photos and videos.

Twitter- enables someone to post short messages (tweets).

YouTube- largest user-driven video content provider, a platform for disseminating
multimedia information.
Viber-can be used for instant text and voice messaging and also share photos and
videos.
Skype- a communication-based social networking site that allows you to connect with
people through video calls and text messaging.

Relationship of Neural Networks with Social Networks

If we are going to analyze the social structure of social networking,
humans are the main component while neurons are for neural networking. The
human interacts and connects with other people using devices through social
networks. Neurons do the same like humans, as neurons have to send off
dendrites and axons to emit and receive messages. The human brain functions
as the control center of the human body. If the brain stops functioning, then our
body will stop and die. If humans do not play its role as the agents of networking,
there will be no users and no communications at all. Each neuron have their
owns function in the body same goes as well that every human has a role and
functions in the society which is to work together, maintain connections,

collaborate, share ideas and information and above all to build good
relationships to one another.
As the adage says’ “No man is an island” is very true to us that an individual
cannot live alone by his own but by the help of other person. Interaction and
interconnectedness are important factors in living this world.

What social networking can give us?

There are different social media platforms that internet can offer. While social
networking maintains our social relationships, take note that there is also negative
impact it brings.

Advantages Disadvantages

1. connect with the people around 1. Bullying on-line/cyber bullying.

the world. 2. Strong public reaction or opinion
2. make new friends on something.
3. can advertise products and sell 3. Susceptibility for identity theft.
4. communicate instantly 4. Susceptibility for invading
5. discover news and information person’s privacy.

Social Network and Yourself

Everyone has the right to connect to other people all around the world. The idea
seemed to be impossible before. But now it is within reach of everybody. While people
enjoy the beauty of the internet with its fully glory, only few are aware of the
disadvantage it creates. By the power vested on technology with social media
accounts as weapons, almost everyone has the power to abuse the use of freedom of
expression. This abuse has pushed through judgement, bashing statements, edited
photographs and merciless criticisms that fall into the area of cyber bullying.

The relationship built between oneself and social networking sites have found
a way into seeking self-validation through reactions from the other people. Take for
example you upload your picture in social media that tends to show reactions from
people by liking or disliking it and giving undesirable comments. They are into thinking
of some standards of beauty that is impossible for a normal person to achieve hence,
falling themselves into depression.
Establishing connection between oneself and social network is not bad, but one
should set limitations for what is real and for what is expected. Use the social media
wisely and use those links that can uplift your well-being and go through life normally.
