Diesel Lubrication and Fuel Delivery System
Diesel Lubrication and Fuel Delivery System
The lubrication system of a diesel engine is almost the same as that of a gasoline engine. But a
diesel engine generates more carbon particles during combustion that is why it has a specially
designed lubrication components, because its operating temperature is generally high moving
parts are subjected to greater stress and friction.
LUBRICATES
Engine oil lubricants metal surface in the engine by forming a film of oil over them. This oil film
reduces friction between metal surfaces and minimizes wear and power loss.
COOLING
Combustion of fuel generates heat, and engine parts become extremely hot. This will lead to
engine seizure unless something is done to lower the heat. Aside from water, engine oil
circulates around the engine parts and helps to lessen the heat of the engine.
SEALING
Engine oil forms a film of oil between the piston and the cylinder. This serves as the seal to the
cylinder wall to prevent loose of engine power.
CLEANING
Sludge and carbon are deposited on engine parts. This increase friction and blocks oil passages.
Engine oil washes this deposits away to prevent their accumulation inside the engine.
COMPONENTS OF LUBRICATION SYSTEM
OIL PUMP
A device use to suck oil pan and distributes the oil
to all engine moving parts through oil passages
provided on the engine.
OIL STRAINER
A screen use to strain oil coming from the oil pan
before the oil reaches the oil pump.
OIL FILTER
This traps all the dirt’s and sludge that goes with the oil.
The equipment use to force fuel from the combustion chamber is a very important part of
diesel engine. It must be precision made, not only must it meter the quantity of fuel required
for each cycle of the engine, but it must develop the high pressure instant of the operating
cycle.
FUEL TANK
Storage of fuel
FUEL LINES
Special piping made of metal tube or hose made of
special plastic material, wherein the fuel flows from
the tank.
A B C
FEED PUMP
A single acting pump that draws up fuel tank and
force it through the fuel filter to the injection pump.
FUEL FILTER
It strains dirt and dust that goes with the fuel.
WATER SEDIMETER
A device like fuel filter that traps and separates the
water from the fuel.
INJECTION PUMP
A device in the diesel fuel system that pressurizes
meters and control the amount of fuel to be
injected to each engine cylinder.
GOVERNOR
A device in the injection pump designed to control the speed of the engine within specified
limits.
TYPES OF INJECTION PUMP
A. Common rail
B. Unit injector
C. In-line type (multi-plunger)
D. Distributor type (rotary type)
