General Marking Guidance

• All candidates must receive the same treatment. Examiners

must mark the first candidate in exactly the same way as
they mark the last.
• Mark schemes should be applied positively. Candidates must
be rewarded for what they have shown they can do rather
than penalised for omissions.
• Examiners should mark according to the mark scheme not
according to their perception of where the grade boundaries
may lie.
• There is no ceiling on achievement. All marks on the mark
scheme should be used appropriately.
• All the marks on the mark scheme are designed to be
awarded. Examiners should always award full marks if
deserved, i.e. if the answer matches the mark
scheme. Examiners should also be prepared to award zero
marks if the candidate’s response is not worthy of credit
according to the mark scheme.
• Where some judgement is required, mark schemes will
provide the principles by which marks will be awarded and
exemplification may be limited.
• When examiners are in doubt regarding the application of the
mark scheme to a candidate’s response, the team leader
must be consulted.
• Crossed out work should be marked UNLESS the candidate
has replaced it with an alternative response.

Questions 21-25

Question Answer Mark

Number
If the candidate gives more than one answer and the correct answer is
present, mark it INCORRECT.
21 The only correct answer is A. 1 (AO1c)

B is not correct as the text states that the group is

‘running down a dimly lit subway’ and they pass
people on their running route.

C is not correct as the text does not mention

members being professional runners. It does state
that the group appeals to office workers.

D is not correct as the text states that ‘there is no

pressure to run quickly’, implying the runners all run
at different speeds.

22 The only correct answer is B. 1 (AO1c)

A is not correct as the text does not give this as a

reason for preferring night running in the winter.

C is not correct as the text mentions events that are

available over the winter months, but training for
them is not given as a reason for preferring night
running in the winter.

D is not correct as even though the text mentions

winter weather conditions, this is not given as a
reason for preferring night running in the winter.

23 The only correct answer is C. 1 (AO1c)

A is not correct as the text does not mention

individual group activities.

B is not correct as the text does not mention this

aspect of group activity.

D is not correct as the text does mention tiredness

but does not state that participating in group activity
makes you feel more tired.

24 The only correct answer is C. 1 (AO1c)

A is not correct as the text states ‘exercising in cold

temperatures actually helps you burn more energy’.

B is not correct as the text states that you should

start off by running more slowly and gradually build
up your speed, not run the whole route slowly.

D is not correct as the text mentions dressing in

layers when running in the winter, but does not state
that this has to be specialist winter clothing.

25 The only correct answer is D. 1 (AO1c)

A is not correct as the text does not state that this is

true, only that female runners may feel safer running
with a group.

B is not correct as the text mentions ‘a carefully

plotted, set route’.

C is not correct as the text mentions that the

volunteers are used to keep the running group
together, not to time them.
