Assignment # 3 Probability and Random Variables [EN-222] Total points:100

CLO-2/PLO-2/C3

(1). The daily amount of coffee, in liters, dispensed by a machine located in an airport lobby is a random
variable X having a continuous uniform distribution over the interval [7 10]. Find the probability that
on a given day the amount of coffee dispensed by this machine will be
(a) at most 8.8 liters;
(b) more than 7.4 liters but less than 9.5 liters;
(c) at least 8.5 liters. [10]

(2). If a set of observations is normally distributed, what percent of these differ from the mean by
(a) more than 1.3σ?
(b) less than 0.52σ? [10]

(3). Suppose the time between calls to a handyman business is exponentially distributed with a mean
time between calls of 15 minutes. What is the probability that the first call arrives within 5 and 8 minutes
of opening? [5]

(4). The time intervals between successive barges passing a certain point on a busy waterway have
an exponential distribution with a mean of 8 minutes.
(a) Find the probability that the time interval between two successive barges is less than 5 minutes.
(b) Find a time interval t such that we can be 95% sure that the time interval between two successive
barges will be greater than t. [10]

(5). What is the mean, variance, and standard distribution of a continuous random variable having a
uniform distribution over the interval [A B]? [10]

(6). Assume that two random variables (X, Y ) are uniformly distributed on a circle with radius a. Then
the joint probability density function is
1 2 2 2
𝑓𝑋,𝑌 (𝑥, 𝑦) = {𝜋𝑎2 , 𝑥 + 𝑦 ≤ 𝑎
0, 𝑒𝑙𝑠𝑒 𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒
Find the expected value of X. [10]

(7). Let X and Y be random variables with joint density function

4𝑥𝑦, 0 < 𝑥, 𝑦 > 1
𝑓𝑋,𝑌 (𝑥, 𝑦) = {
0, 𝑒𝑙𝑠𝑒 𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒
Find the expected value of 𝑍 = √𝑋 2 + 𝑌 2 [10]

(8). The joint distribution of the two random variables X1 and X2 is given by
6𝑥 , 0 < 𝑥2 < 𝑥1 < 1
𝑓𝑋1 .𝑋2 (𝑥1 , 𝑥2 ) = { 2
0, 𝑒𝑙𝑠𝑒 𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒
(a) Give the marginal distribution 𝑓𝑋1 (𝑥1 ) of the proportion X1 and verify that it is a valid density
function.
(b) What is the probability that proportion X2 is less than 0.5, given that X1 is 0.7? [10]

(9). The joint distribution of X and Y is given by

𝑥+𝑦
, 𝑥 > 0, 𝑦 > 0, 3𝑥 + 𝑦 < 3
𝑓𝑋,𝑌 (𝑥, 𝑦) = { 2
0, 𝑒𝑙𝑠𝑒 𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒
Assignment # 3 Probability and Random Variables [EN-222] Total points:100

(a) Find the probability 𝑃(𝑋 < 𝑌)

(b) Find the marginal PDFs of X and Y [10]

(10). A lawyer commutes daily from his suburban home to his midtown office. The average time for a
one-way trip is 24 minutes, with a standard deviation of 3.8 minutes. Assume the distribution of trip
times to be normally distributed.
(a) What is the probability that a trip will take at least 1/2 hour?
(b) If the office opens at 9:00 A.M. and the lawyer leaves his house at 8:45 A.M. daily, what percentage
of the time is he late for work?
(c) If he leaves the house at 8:35 A.M. and coffee is served at the office from 8:50 A.M. until 9:00
A.M., what is the probability that he misses coffee?
(d) Find the length of time above which we find the slowest 15% of the trips.
(e) Find the probability that 2 of the next 3 trips will take at least 1/2 hour. [15]
