CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
A. Background
Evil character or vices have been a topic of interest to researchers in a
variety of disciplines, including psychology, sociology, and ethics. This
phenomenon involves behaviors that harm the individual or society as a whole,
such as lying, manipulation, aggression, and others. In the context of
psychology, evil character is often associated with internal and external
factors that influence the formation of a person's personality.
Negative behaviors such as arrogance, anger, and dishonesty not only
harm the individuals involved, but can also disrupt interpersonal relationships,
disrupt social stability, and even threaten the security of society. Therefore, a
deep understanding of evil characters is important in an effort to prevent and
overcome its negative effects.
In this study, various theories and research related to evil characters or
vices will be studied, both from a psychological and social point of view. The
main objectives are to identify the factors that influence the development of
evil characters, explore the psychological mechanisms involved in negative
behavior, and analyze its impact in social and cultural contexts.
With a better understanding of evil characters or vices, it is hoped that
effective intervention strategies can be developed to prevent and reduce these
negative behaviors. In addition, this research is also expected to provide new
insights into human complexity and the dynamics of relationships between
individuals in a complex modern society.

DISCUSSION
According to many opinions, the word "character" comes from the Latin
words "kharakter," "kharassein," and "kharax," meaning "tools for marketing," "to
engrave," and "pinted stake." This word began to be used in French as "character" in
the 14th century. When it entered the English language, this word "character"
changed to "charac-ter." As for the Indonesian the word "character" has changed to
"character". Linguistically character is character; character; Psychological, moral, or
ethical qualities that distinguish one person from another. In terms of character is the
main trait that is engraved and integrated in a person's thoughts, feelings, beliefs, and
behaviors that distinguish him from others1.
The term character refers to basic moral values such as caring, honesty, justice,
responsibility and respect for themselves and others2. In the context of moral creeds,
evil character or despicable morals are behaviors that must be avoided because they
can have a negative impact on both individuals and others.
A person's character can be defined as the good or bad qualities they belong to.
Morality has more to do with the qualities of human behavior or actions that can be
characterized as positive or negative. Ethics is a person's behavior based on his or her
personality values, which determine whether they act in a good or bad way. "Morals,
ethics, and morals all shape character The last conclusion is that morals are the state

of a person's soul or nature that can cause a good or bad deed directly without
planning3.
Although character and morals are still debated, according to the author, both
have values that boil down to immersing positive values / kindness. However, when
viewed in terms of terms, it certainly has differences, because morals basically come
from teachings revealed by God, while character comes from the results of human
thoughts and good values born from community habits. Thus, morality is universal,
eternal, and absolute, while character is local and relative. But both have universal
values that both emphasize the importance of the habituation process, so that now it is
not a matter of which one is more suitable because what is needed is not a term but
how to implement it optimally so that it produces the desired results.
1. Anger
The word angry in Arabic is gadab which comes from the word عضب – يغضب
غضباwhich means explosion of blood in the heart. Anger in the Great Dictionary
Indonesian defined as being upset, disgusted, irritated, and very unhappy because
oneself was treated inappropriately. M. Quraish Shihab argues that gadab is defined
as firm, immovable, hard and sturdy, then played by the perpetrator against an object
accompanied by emotion.
Anger is the power that Allah Almighty entrusted to man in the form of
demons. Signs of someone angry arise from the external human person, namely
changes in skin color, trembling limbs, reddish eyes, irregular speech and movements,
and uncontrolled actions. In addition, the impact of anger makes the body's nerves
4
stretch, blood churn and the tendency of the brain to be unstable. Thus, there is a need
for a form of self-control from the nature of anger even though in reality the nature of
anger cannot be eliminated perfectly because it has become a human instinct.
Al-Gazali said that anger is within man, to reject destruction and keep it from
destruction. Because, in it there is something cold and hot but the two are always
contradictory and hostile. The causes of anger are caused by external and internal
factors, which are as follows:
The desire to follow lust is human nature, so it can cause anger. Anger is an
emotion that has characteristics of high sympathetic nervous system activity and due
to the appearance of strong feelings of dislike due to a mistake. Anger occurs because
he cannot control and direct his own soul and cannot determine his will and reason.
Thus, some form of self-control is needed so as not to have a turbulent demon-like
nature.
2. Arrogant Nature
Satan was given power by Allah Almighty, namely the power of heaven and
earth, intelligence in thinking, even ruling the Persian and Roman seas that stretched
to the West and East. So it is this power that makes Satan such a proud creature.
5
Muhammad Hasbi ash-Shiddieqy argued that arrogance, or takabbur, is a trait
that a person possesses by hating others and feeling that he has a higher position4than
others. As for the causes of arrogance, they have differences from each other,
depending on each person. As for the arrogance effect, that is:
Apart from some of the points above, the impact of arrogance is also a soul
that is upset and shaken, blocks the truth, and is not total in remembering and
knowing. One of the ways that can treat his sense of superiority over others, is to
follow his will and bow his head before him. So, this influence will make him fall
into bad wishful thinking and result in it. The shock of his soul. According to Hasbi
ash-Shiddieqy that the impact of takabbur or arrogant nature is divided into 2, namely
outwardly and mentally. The mental effects are: 1) Anger, that is, insulting those who
are superior to him. 2) Spitting, that is, scattering his feelings when he sees people
lower than him getting help when he thinks they do not deserve this help. 3) Revenge,

which is trying to bring down those who have the opportunity to hinder the journey
they take. The outward effects are: 1) Zalim, which is trying to persecute someone
with his tongue and energy. 2) Behave haughtily and arrogantly.
3. Hypocrite
The word hypocrite comes from the word nifaq which means hypocrisy.
Hypocrisy is a term that refers to a person who looks different from the outside and
inside, or better known as two faces. Hypocrisy according to Muhammad Hasbi ash-
Shiddieqy is to do something in a public place so that people who see him can praise
him for doing good, so that the work done is not to gain the pleasure of Allah SWT.
Some of the important points that have been discussed are: anger, boastfulness
and hypocrisy are behaviors related to psychology. The development of psychology
can describe the cause of the emergence of diseases caused by the soul, which
actually the disease arises not because of organic factors of the body but because of
the condition of the soul that is disappointed, depressed, restless and the like and then
7
better known as psychosomatic (because the soul so that the body hurts). The causes
of mental disorders according to Sururin, are as follows:
a. Feelings: such as having fear, spite, worry, anger towards small things,
despair, not optimism and the like.
b. Mind: lack of thinking ability, forgetfulness, lack of thinking ability
and the like.
c. Behavior: lying, mischievous, tyrannizing oneself and others, and the
like.
d. Body health.
Satan has a great influence on the process of human life. The existence of demons in
the human body gives him the opportunity to control himself, thus giving birth to
despicable traits (such as arrogant, hypocritical, etc.) and will affect the body that can
have a negative impact on oneself or others. In addition, it can be seen that the factor
of the existence of demons around humans is even described as creatures flowing in
human blood can make humans have the same qualities as those possessed by
demons.
As is well known, arrogance and hypocrisy are one of several evil traits found
in human beings. As for these factors, they are caused by the mind, behavior, and
even the health of the human body. So it is very necessary to cleanse the soul
outwardly and mentally, from religious, psychological and medical aspects. Thus, it
is necessary to clear the mind so as not to be possessed by demons by remembering
Allah Almighty, doing good, and carrying out what is commanded by the Qur'an and
hadith. In an effort to free oneself from the evil influence Satan will cause.

values. First, it is important to realize that character and vices are not static; They can
be influenced by both internal and external factors.
