ACTIVITY 1
GE SEMINARS

Instructions: Carefully read each problem provided and ensure thorough

understanding before proceeding to solve. Present your comprehensive solution neatly
and clearly. Enclose your final answer within a box.

1. A camera has a field of view of 87.5° and focal length of 145mm. What is the dimension of
the square format expressed in millimeters?
2. What is the focal length of a camera if it has a format of 250mm and field of view of 120°?
(in mm)
3. A vertical photograph shows a valley having an elevation above sea level of 1040 ft. and a
hill which is at elevation above sea level of 900 ft. The photograph was taken at an altitude of
9500 ft. above sea level using an aerial camera with a focal length of 153mm. Determine the
scale of the photograph of the valley.
4. A photograph shows a parcel of land with a width of 62.75mm and length of 80.61mm which
is at elevation above sea level of 195m. The photograph was taken by a plane at an elevation
of 2950m above sea level with an aerial camera having a focal length of 210mm. Compute
the actual area of the tract of land in hectares.
5. The relief displacement of a radio station tower measured 0.55cm on a vertical aerial
photograph taken on an observation plane from flying height of 965ft above the ground. The
radial distance from the center of the photograph to the displaced image of the top of the tower
is 0.87cm, compute the height of the radio station tower and its horizontal distance directly
below the plane. The focal length of the camera used is 0.3cm. Express your answers in
meters.
6. Aerial photography is to be acquired over an area of 18.5km wide and 22.75km long. From
map scale and accuracy requirements, it has been determined that photos must be an average
scale of 1:5000, the photo format is 240mm by 240mm. End-lap and side-lap are 60% and
30%, respectively. Determine the minimum number of photos needed.
7. Determine the absolute numerical scale to replace an equivalent scale of 25mm = 20km.
8. On a map with a scale of 4mm = 2m, the distance between point 1 and point 2 is 15.70cm.
What is the corresponding map distance if a scale of 1:2500 is used?
9. The distance between two contour lines in a map with 15m contour interval is 7.8cm. The
scale of the map is 1:35,000. What is the slope of the ground in grade? Degrees? Radians?
Mils? Grads?
10. On a map, the horizontal distance between control points X and Y is 18cm. If the elevations
of X and Y are 672.27m and 650.22m, respectively, how far from X will a contour line with an
elevation of 665.25m will cross line XY?
11. A man’s eyes 1.80m above sea level can barely see the top of a lighthouse which is at a
certain distance away from a man. Determine the following:
a. Elevation of the top of the lighthouse above sea level if the lighthouse is 25km away
from the man.

b. Distance between the lighthouse and the man in meters if the top of the lighthouse
is 15m above sea level.
c. Height of the tower at a distance 18km away from the man that will just be visible
without the line of sight approaching nearer than 1.80m to the water.

12. If the latitude and longitude of the point of intersection of the

extreme west meridian and extreme south parallel of the
cadastral map are 12-15-00N and 121-01-00E as shown in the
figure, what is the cadastral number of the Sectional Cadastral
Map in the scale of 1:250 at the top right as shaded in the figure?

13. If the latitude and longitude of the point of intersection of the

extreme west meridian and extreme south parallel of the
cadastral map are 13-55-00N and 121-45-00E as shown in the
figure, what is the cadastral number of the Sectional Cadastral
Map in the scale of 1:250 at the bottom right as shaded in the
figure?

14. Below is the current meter notes for a river.
