SI

 Recently, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted a cyclonic storm, Cyclone
Michong, over the south-west Bay of Bengal.
 It is likely to hit the coastal districts of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.
 Cyclone Michong is the fourth tropical cyclone of the year over the Bay of Bengal.
S

What is a cyclone?
 A cyclone is a large-scale system of air that rotates around the centre of a low pressure area.
PC

 It usually comes with violent storms and bad weather.

 There are mainly two types of cyclones: tropical cyclones and temperate cyclones.

About Tropical Cyclone:

 Tropical cyclone is a seasonal phenomena.
 Tropical cyclones form only over warm ocean waters near the equator.
 Warm, moist air rises up and away from the ocean surface, creating an area of low pressure.
 This causes air to move from surrounding areas of high pressure to an area of low pressure.
 This causes the air to heat up and begin to rise, as the air rises and cools, the water in the air forms
clouds.
 This entire system of clouds and air rotates and rises along with the heat of the ocean.
 As the speed of rotation of the air increases, an eye forms in the middle.

Naming:
 Nodal Authority: World Meteorological Organization (WMO)
 Indian Ocean Region: Bangladesh, India, Maldives, Myanmar, Oman, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and
Thailand contribute to the naming of cyclones that occur in this region.

3. Merapi Volcano
 Recently, Mount Merapi erupted with massive gas clouds and avalanches of lava, forcing the
concerned national authorities to halt tourism and mining activities.

D
About Mount Merapi:
 Mount Merapi (Mountain of Fire) is one of the world's most active volcanoes, located in Indonesia.

IE
 It has an altitude of 9,551 feet and has steep slopes with dense vegetation on its lower banks.

Why are there more volcanoes in Indonesia?

 Indonesia is located on the Ring of Fire, a vast area around the Pacific Ocean.

IF
 It consists of more than 17,000 islands and islets – and about 130 active volcanoes.
 The Ring of Fire, also known as the Circum-Pacific Belt, is a path along the Pacific Ocean that is
characterized by active volcanoes and frequent earthquakes.
 The abundance of volcanoes and earthquakes along the Ring of Fire is caused by the movement of
tectonic plates in the region.
PL
 Throughout much of the Ring of Fire, plates overlap at convergent boundaries called subduction
zones. That is, the plate that is below is pushed down, or compressed, by the plate above it. As the
rock is pressed, it melts and becomes magma.
 The abundance of magma so close to the Earth's surface creates suitable conditions for volcanic
activity.
M
 An important exception is the boundary between the Pacific and North American plates. This
extension of the Ring of Fire is a transform boundary, where plates move past each other.
 This type of boundary produces a large number of earthquakes as stress builds up and releases in
SI

the Earth's crust.

4. Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI) 2024
 The Climate Change Performance Index was released by the German Watch organization during
the global climate talks (COP28) being held in Dubai.
 India has ranked 7th in the Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI) – 2024, underscoring its
significant role and contribution to the ongoing global efforts aimed at mitigating climate change.
About CCPI:
 The CCPI, published annually since 2005, is an independent monitoring tool to track countries'
climate protection performance.
 It is published by Germanwatch, NewClimate Institute and Climate Action Network
International.
 It points to the climate mitigation efforts of 63 countries and the European Union, which collectively
account for more than 90% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
 Performance metrics: The CCPI evaluates countries in four key categories: greenhouse gas (GHG)
emissions (40%), renewable energy (20%), energy use (20%), and climate policy (20%).
 CCPI 2024: No country performed well enough across all index categories to earn a very high overall

D
rating. Therefore the first three overall positions remain vacant.
 Denmark took fourth place, Estonia came fifth and Philippines took the top rank at sixth place.
 India's ranking in CCPI 2024: India moved up from 8th position in CCPI 2023 to 7th position in

IE
CCPI 2024. Interestingly, due to the absence of countries in the first three positions, India is
effectively ranked fourth in global climate performance.

India's scores and rankings in key categories:

 GHG Emissions and Energy Use: India ranks 9th in GHG emissions and 10th in energy use

IF
among the countries assessed, mainly due to its low per capita energy use, which is a factor
strengthening its climate position.
 Moreover, in the per capita GHG category, the country is on track to meet the below 2°C
benchmark.
PL
 Climate Policy: India ranked 10th in climate policy, showing moderate progress compared to its
performance in the previous assessment.
 Renewable Energy: India's performance was more moderate, ranking 37th and barely in the 'high'
performance category.
 This position represents a decline from 24th place in CCPI 2023.
M
 Global Context and Comparative Analysis:
 G20-Performance: Only three G20 countries/regions are among the high performers in CCPI 2024,
with India (7th), Germany (14th) and EU (16th) ranked.
 G20 members are responsible for more than 75% of the world's greenhouse gas emissions.
SI

 Developed Countries: Many developed countries, especially including the United Kingdom, United
States, Italy, etc., showed poor performance compared to the CCPI 2023 indicating lack of
adequate progress in combating climate change.
