MUSIC 6
LEARNING MODULE
PREFACE
A blessed Academic Year 2023-2024! In line with the COVID-19
pandemic and the consequent shortened academic year, the Music
Area of Grades 1-10 has prepared learning modules that were designed
primarily to ensure learning continuity to meet the standards of the
most essential learning competencies (MELCs) set forth by the
Department of Education (DepEd). This set of competencies is aligned
with the national standards or frameworks, content areas, and
applicable to real-life situations. This Music Learning Module is
anchored to the different learning competencies in Music providing
cultural literacies, artistic expression, and skills necessary in acquiring
knowledge, and integrated with the school's Vision-Mission, the Ten
Hallmarks of the Benedictine Education and the Sustainable
Development Goals.

This also consists of synchronous and asynchronous activities that

take in the form of virtual discussions, pre-recorded video lessons or
demonstration videos as well as music listening through online links to
enhance musical skills. These activities aim to inspire the learners to
understand the concepts of musical elements such as rhythm, melody,
harmony, texture, dynamics, tempo, timbre, and musical form in
engaging and meaningful ways. Likewise, these activities will also help
the learners in developing their appreciation of music as a way of
expressing themselves while developing their creativity. The group
activities in their performance tasks will enhance their social skills and
sense of responsibility as to answer the school's theme for this year:
"A Synodal Culture through Prayer and Integral Education.”
INTRODUCTION
Hello Grade 6!

This module features two concepts in music

which are Beat and Rhythm

How can you perform the steady beat? How can you
demonstrate accurate rhythm? What are the important
characteristics of a conductor or leader? How about a
good listener and a creative performer? These
questions will be answered as you explore, learn and
perform throughout the lessons which include diverse
musical learning activities and experiences. Get ready
to read, write, listen, sing, create, move and play.

This is the steady pulse in music that

we call as the BEAT
It is called the steady beat because it does not go
fast or slow. We can perform the steady beat using
different instruments or even hand gestures

Here We Go!

A conductor performs the beat using a baton or just

his or her hands. The role of the conductor is to lead and
guide a group of musicians and singers in performing.

The beat can be grouped into 2s (twos), 3s (threes) or

4s (fours). METER is the musical term which refers to
the grouping of beats. The musical symbol for the
grouping of beats is called TIME SIGNATURE in Music.

can be found on the first beat and then

are not accented. Pieces such as "waltz"

DUPLE METER

Now I Know! Answer the following questions.
Write your answer on the space provided.

1. What is the musical term which refers to the grouping of beats?

2. True or False. A triple meter has 3 beats, the first beat is strong and
the two beats are weak.

3. What do we call to the symbol we use to indicate the grouping of

beats?
4. True or False. The upper number of the time signature tells the
number of beats per measure.

Listen to your favorite songs and identify the time signature.

Practice More! You can conduct while listening to the song to help you identify its
time signature.
Make a list of your songs together with its time signature. See

How can we represent the sounds that we hear?

In Music, we use symbols to show how long or short the

sounds are. Like the pizza slices, the sounds are “sliced” or
divided and musical symbols are used to show different
note values or how long or short the sounds are. The
organized pattern of notes is called RHYTHM in Music.

Look at the symbols used for whole note, half note,

quarter note, eighth notes and sixteenth notes.

Let's Practice! Can you recognize the different note values in the piece below?
Encircle the quarter notes, underline the sixteenth notes, put the
half notes inside a box, and cross out the eighth notes.

We can use words as guide to perform different note values. Read the following fruit
names assigned for each note value. Notice how many hearts or beats each note value
receive with the help of the beat marker.

For the half note, it occupies two beats, on the other hand quarter note only receives
one beat, while the pair of eighth notes contain two sounds on a beat.

Practice the pattern of note values below. Use your knowledge of fruit names to
accurately perform the pattern. Fruit for whole note, pear for half note, grape for

We learned that the organized pattern of note values is called

RHTYHM in Music.
The note values represent sounds in Music. In the previous
listening activity, we were able to see unfamiliar symbols that
represent pause or silence in Music. These are musical symbols
for Rests. Rhythm can also be defined as the combination of
organized sounds and silence in Music.

Patterns can be seen everywhere.
It can be represented by repeating objects or shapes.

In music there can also be repeating patterns that we hear.

These repeating patterns can be written with the use of different
note and rest values.

Repeating pattern in music is called OSTINATO.

Ostinato can be played with instruments or even with body

percussions such as clapping, stomping, and tapping of body parts.

The Repeat Bar is used to indicate that the pattern is to be repeated.
