IA Planning Document - BIOLOGY IB

The document provides guidance for students choosing a topic for an IB biology internal assessment. It outlines identifying an independent and dependent variable, crafting a research question, and finding an appropriate procedure. Students are instructed to choose an interesting and relevant topic, identify what they will change and measure, develop a focused research question, and design a procedure to answer their question.

IB Biology Internal Assessment

Planning Document

Part A - Choosing a topic for investigation

Find a topic that is interesting to you and relevant to biology. This might be something within the
course content or beyond it.

Which topic have you chosen and why?

What is the real-world context/significance of this topic?

Part B - Identifying an independent and dependent variable

From your topic area, you will need to identify a variable that will cause a measurable change.

Example: We would expect that increasing intensity of exercise will increase the rate of
respiration, so we might consider altering the duration of exercise and measuring a quantifiable
change in CO₂ output. This would allow us to calculate the changes in respiration rate.

i. What will you change?

(independent variable)

ii. What will be impacted by changes to your

independent variable? (dependent variable)

iii. What raw data will you collect to calculate the

change in the dependent variable?

iv. Will this investigation require experimental

work, field work, or the use of secondary data
(simulations/databases/modeling)?

Part C - Crafting your research question

A focused research question is based on the following structure:

How does changing [independent variable] affect [dependent variable] through the
measurement of [the raw data measurements and technique used]?
Example: What is the effect of potassium ion concentration (ppm) on the initial day of
germination on the growth rate of water wisteria (Hygrophila difformis) as measured through
mass change per day (g/day) over a period of 1 week?

What is your research question?

To identify whether or not this question is appropriate for an IA, it is helpful to have a sense of
what the relationship will be. If your chosen topic is not one you have explored in class yet, you
may need to do a bit of research.

Which sources provide valid information on the scientific basis for your research question?
(include links for referencing later)

What might your final graph look like,

showing an expected relationship between
your two variables?
(a sketch is fine)

Part D - Finding a procedure

The initial outline of your procedure may come from in-class activities, websites or other
external resources. It is important to find a procedure that will allow you to directly answer your
research question. For a database or simulation IA, this will involve the selection of appropriate
sources of secondary data.
Which resources might be useful for designing your procedure?

Which steps might be important to include in your procedure?

(a brief outline is acceptable at this stage)

What are the safety, ethical and environmental issues related to your procedure?

Type of issue Hazards Safety precautions

Chemical
(relevant to specific
quantities,
concentrations and
forms)

Procedural
(relevant to
equipment and
processes used)

Ethical (relevant to
any potential for
harm to living
organisms or the
environment, also
including voluntary
participation and
informed consent)
