Course Description: The purpose of this course is to develop the English-language proficiency of
prospective elementary school teachers and to help them become confident in reading, writing, speaking,
and listening. Instead of teaching grammar in isolation and only at sentence level, this course is based on
developing the language abilities of students and teachers through an integrated approach that provides
opportunities to develop their listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. With a focus on social
interaction, the course draws specific attention to the accurate use of structures, improvement of
pronunciation, and development of active vocabulary in descriptive, narrative, and instructional texts.
Learning Outcomes
 After completing this course, Student Teachers will:
 Have improved their listening and reading skills in English
 Be able to communicate in written and oral English with peers and teachers
 Rely less on their first languages and increase their use of English informal and informal
situations
 Have a deeper understanding of correct English structures in descriptive, narrative, and
instructional texts.
 Plan and prepare speeches that inform, persuade, or fulfill the needs of a special occasion;
 Use presentation aids to enhance your speeches;
 Outline your speeches in a logical and thorough fashion;
 Conduct meaningful research on a variety of topics;
 Analyze your audience and design speeches to reflect your analysis;
 Evaluate speeches based on a variety of verbal and non-verbal criteria;
 Listen effectively, regardless of your interest in the subject matter

Course requirement:
 Students are supposed to study and review the material before the class, do exercises,
assignments and fulfill the project.
 You may be late for 15 minutes and it is Ok, but after that you are marked as absent.
 Inappropriate academic behaviors such as chewing gums, making phone calls,
laughing, and joking are not tolerated.
 You need to have the course material with yourself either in electronic devices or
printed book.
 2.5 Score is reduced from the total score for each session you miss.
 You can’t have more than 4 absent sessions.
 You need to do your assignments on time.
 Every one of you is requested to actively participate in classroom discussions.
 Everyone is requested to give at least 1 presentations (every presentation lasting 45
minutes) on the topics in the syllabus.
 Everyone is requested to design a sample chapter for one of the Speaking by
Speaking research areas (you will be presenting them from session 13 onwards).
