Articles: a/an, the, no article

A / An The

We use a / an with singular countable nouns: We use the:

When we say what something is or what When we talk about something we’ve

somebody does. already mentioned.

The frst time we mention a thing / person. When it’s clear what we’re referring to.

In exclamation with What...! When there’s only one of something.

In expressions of frequency. With places in a town, e.g. cinema, theatre.


With superlatives
Ex.

It’s a nice house.


Ex.
She’s a lawyer.
I saw an old man with a dog. I saw an old man with a dog. The dog was barking.
What an awful day! The bell rang and my father opened the door.
I have classes three times a week. The children are at school.
The moon goes aroung the Earth
I’m going to the cinema tonight.

No article It’s the best restaurant in town.

We don’t use an article:


When we are speaking in general (with plural and uncountable nouns), e.g. I love flowers.
Compare: I love the flowers in my garden. (= the specific flowers in that place).
With some nouns, e.g. home, work, school, church, after at / to / from.
Before meals, days, and months.
Before next / last + day, week, etc.

Ex.
Girls often learn to read earlier than boys.
I never have breakfast.
Love is more important than money.
I’m going to the theatre on Tuesday.
She’s not at home today.
See you next week.
I get back from work at 5.30.
