• Ensure all substrates are thoroughly clean, sound, dry and free from any contaminants such as dirt,
salt, algae, fungi, lichens, oil and grease.
• Remove all loose, flaking and embedded rust, mill scale and paint by simply scraping it off with
abrasive tools such as course sandpaper, a wire brush, mechanical grinder, or sandblast (SA 2 ½ with
a 40 to 50 profile) for large areas.
• Finish with a fine grain sandpaper afterwards to smooth the surface. Bring metal back to a sound
condition.
• Clean substrate with Duram NS2 Galvanized Iron Cleaner as per instructions.
• Treat rust particularly in difficult, hard to reach areas with Duram NS1 Rust Buster as per
instructions.
• Apply Duram NS5 Metcote Etch Primer within 12 hours of surface preparation, and immediately for
coastal environments, to prevent contamination and oxidation.

UNPAINTED SURFACES - NEW OR WEATHERED

• Mild steel and stainless steel: Apply Duram NS5 Metcote Etch Primer direct to prepared surface.
• Aluminium, PVC and fibreglass: Sand with 220 grit sandpaper, dust off and wipe clean with Duram
Xylene as per instructions.

CHROMADEK, ZINCALUME OR ALUZINC

• Apply Duram NS5 Metcote Etch Primer direct to prepared surface.

PREVIOUSLY PAINTED SURFACES

• Remove powdery or loose, flaking paint completely with a wire brush, sandpaper or high pressure
cleaner. Abrade surface with coarse sandpaper to ensure good adhesion. Wipe down with a slightly
damp cloth and allow to dry. Spot prime bare substrate with Duram NS5 Metcote Etch Primer.

• Stir Duram NS5 Metcote Etch Primer well using a flat paddle.
• Thinning is not recommended.
• Apply one coat thinly with a brush or roller using long, smooth strokes. Apply at a uniform thickness
and avoid a thick coat. For air assisted spray, thin with 5 – 10% Duram DTM Brush Cleaner and
Thinners to a viscosity of 16 – 20 seconds in a Ford #4 Viscosity Cup.
• Drying time: 1 - 2 hrs.
• For optimal protection against corrosion, apply Duram NS4 Anti-Rust Primer within 12 hours as per
instructions, before applying the topcoat.

• Whilst every care is taken in manufacture, no warranty is given relating to use.
• Do not mix with water.
• Not suitable for ponding areas.
• Observe special precautions in aggressive environments such as coastal and industrial areas.
• Do not apply outside if rain is expected. Apply when ambient and surface temperatures are between
5°C to 35°C.
• Keep cool and protect against freezing.
• Donate unwanted paint. Dispose contents responsibly - do not empty into drains or watercourses.
Recycle empty container.

• Keep out of reach of children.

• Wear protective gloves and clothing.
• If swallowed: Immediately call a poison centre / doctor.
• If on skin: Wash with plenty of soap and water.
• Use in a well ventilated area. If experiencing respiratory symptoms: Move person to fresh air. Call a
doctor.
• If in eyes: Rinse with water.
• Flammable liquid and vapour. In case of fire: Use a fire extinguisher.
