Chapter 7 Numerical Problems
Chapter 7 Numerical Problems
1. The time period of a 500-kg satellite circulating the earth at a height ℎ = 150 km above its
surface is 90 minutes (See the figure below). The earth’s radius is 6400 km. Find
(a) the orbital speed of the satellite.
(b) its centripetal acceleration.
(c) the centripetal force acting on it.
2. A small object of mass m is suspended from a string of length L. The object revolves with
constant speed v in a horizontal circle of radius r, as shown in Figure 6.4. (Because the
string sweeps out the surface of a cone, the system is known as a conical pendulum.) Show
that
𝑣 = √𝐿𝑔 sin 𝜃 tan 𝜃
3. A car has to move on a curve of a flat road of radius 40 m (See the figure below). The
coefficient of static friction between the tires and the road is µs = 1.0. Will the car follow
the curve, or skid if its speed is 90 km/hr?
4. Mr. Muma, a civil engineer by profession, wishes to design a curved exit ramp for a
highway in such a way that a car will not have to rely on friction to round the curve without
skidding. In other words, a car moving at the designated speed can negotiate the curve
even when the road is covered with ice. Such a ramp is usually banked; this means the
roadway is tilted toward the inside of the curve. Suppose the designated speed for the
ramp is to be 48 km/h and the radius of the curve is 50 m. At what angle should the curve
be banked?
5. A pilot of mass 75 kg in a jet aircraft executes a loop-the-loop, as shown in the figure
below. In this maneuver, the aircraft moves in a vertical circle of radius 2.70 km at a
constant speed of 225 m/s. Determine the force exerted by the seat on the pilot
(a) at the bottom of the loop.
(b) at the top of the loop.
6. A particle moves in a circle of radius 4 m. Its speed change from 0 to 6 m/s in 3 seconds.
After 3 seconds, find
(a) its tangential acceleration,
(b) its centripetal acceleration.
(c) the magnitude of its resultant acceleration.
7. During a solar eclipse, the moon, the earth and the sun all lie on the same line. The
distance between the sun and the moon is 1011 m. The distance between the moon and
the earth is 4×108 m. Given that; 𝑀𝑠𝑢𝑛 = 2 × 1030 kg, 𝑀𝑒𝑎𝑟𝑡ℎ = 6 × 1024 kg and
𝑀𝑚𝑜𝑜𝑛 = 7 × 1022 kg. Calculate the net gravitational force on the moon. Neglect effects
of other planets.
8. Mount Everest, the highest mountain on earth is 8848.9 m above the sea level. How does
the magnitude of the acceleration due to gravity change between sea level and the top of
Mount Everest?
9. A remote sensing satellite of the earth revolves in a circular orbit at a height of 250 km
above the earth’s surface.
(a) Find the orbital speed and period of revolution of the satellite.
(b) If mass of the satellite is 1000 kg, calculate its kinetic energy and gravitational
potential energy relative to the earth.
10. Communication satellites are placed in “geosynchronous’’ orbits around the Earth. This
means the satellite must have the same orbital period as the Earth (24 hours). At what
height above the surface of the Earth must one place such a satellite to archive
geosynchronous?
11. Estimate the mass of the sun from the following data: Mean orbital radius of the earth
round the sun = 1.5×108 km, period of revolution of the earth = 365.25 days.
12. A body is launched with velocity 75% of its possible escape velocity from the surface of
the earth. How high does it go?
13. Period of Saturn is 29.5 years. Calculate the average distance of Saturn from the sun. The
average distance of the earth from the sun is 1.5×108 km.
