WASTE NOT, WANT NOT
Kaitlin, why is food waste such a problem?
It’s a problem both because unused food could help reduce hunger worldwide, and because the growing,
harvesting and disposal of food which is never used produces huge amounts of greenhouse gases. Recent
figures show that around a third of the world’s agricultural land is used for the production of unused food.
The resulting carbon accounts for about a third of the emissions from the world’s biggest polluters, which is
a big problem for all of us!
What can people do to help?
One of the most innovative ways of dealing with food waste is through the use of food-sharing apps. These
apps connect people and businesses who have extra food to individuals who can make use of it.
Can you give us an example of how such an app works?
Say a friend in the country has given you a large box of apples which you can’t use, or perhaps you’ve bought
too much food for a party and don’t want to throw it out. You can post your spare food on one of the apps, and
within a short time you’re likely to have a taker. It makes both parties feel good about saving food from the bin
and helping to reduce carbon pollution. And you might even make a new friend when you go to hand over
the food.
Aren’t people embarrassed to use leftover food?
Interestingly, the way we look at so-called second-hand food seems to be changing. My theory is that concerns
about the environment are having an effect on the embarrassment that is normally associated with eating
other people’s waste food. All it takes is a small adjustment in attitudes to begin to see someone’s extra food
as a gift both to you and to the planet.
1 Kaitlin says that about a third of the world’s agricultural land is used for __________.
2 Food-sharing apps are __________ food waste.
3 Kaitlin mentions a box of apples to ____________ the kind of food you might want to share.
4 Kaitlin mentions the __________ as an added bonus to using a food-sharing app.
