About NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming)

NLP is worldwide accepted as Excellence Model. Neuro - Linguistic Programming is an extremely

powerful concept. It is said by many to contain the most accessible, positive and useful aspects
of modern psychology, and so can be helpful in virtually every aspect of personal and inter-
personal relations. NLP enables better awareness and control of oneself, better appreciation of
the other person's feelings and behavioral style, which in turn enables better empathy and
cooperation. NLP consists of a set of powerful techniques for rapid and effective behavioral
modification, and an operational philosophy to guide their use. The experience of undergoing
NLP training is a life-changing one for many people, and its techniques offer substantial
advantages to people performing most roles in life.

NLP – Neuro Linguistic Programming & Education *
The overall goal of NLP applied to education is to provide a
basic framework that is aligned with the empirical experience
of learning and training situations for the purpose of improving
the effectiveness and speed with which goal oriented learning
can take place (Dilts & Epstein, 1995). NLP relates words,
thoughts, and behaviors to goals and purposes by focusing on
effective communication with tools for taking perspectives on
issues (Craft, 2001).

NLP views education from the relationship of the fundamental

processes through which we acquire new skills and achieve
personal competence and excellence. This involves utilizing
skills for developing conscious and unconscious competence
through the establishment of new programs and strategies
(James, 1996). This covers a spectrum from learning disabilities and problems to exceptional and
accelerated learning programs. The content of learning is constantly changing and it is important
to develop skills that build on the how and why of learning to start developing such skills as early
in life as possible.

Dilts & Epstein (1995) suggest the following areas are covered by the application of NLP to
education:
 Basic principles of learning
 Fundamental Neuro-linguistic processes involved in learning
 Dynamic assessment and self-assessment processes
 Levels of learning and learning strategies
 Interactive learning and cooperative learning processes
 Types of skills and learning styles Learning tools and teaching tools

NLP applications in education provide fundamental tools and strategies to help people to
update, acquire, filter, and retain new information as a constant, ongoing process (James, 1996).
The basic applications of NLP to education revolve around the principles of dynamic learning
(Dilts & Epstein, 1995). Dynamic learning is about learning through experience. The process of
dynamic learning involves learning by doing, exploring different methods of thinking, and
acknowledges that the relationships between people are a key factor in learning (Dilts & Epstein,
1995). Dynamic learning tools emphasize the skills of cooperative learning, co-coaching, and
mentoring.

Dilts & Epstein (1995) list the following outcomes of application of NLP to education:
 Identifying and enriching personal strengths
 Enhancing memory and imagination
 Developing optimal learning states and strategies
 Dealing with resistances to learning
 Establishing beliefs that support learning
 Identify and reframe limiting beliefs relating to learning
 Management of multi-level learning interventions
 Transforming perceived failures into positive feedback
 Exploring interactive learning processes
NLP Applied in Schools *
Helm (1989,1991) has proposed that classes and possibly entire schools be established for
singular learning modalities so the modality strength of the individual can be optimally
enhanced. Rawlins & Eberly (1991) have suggested using NLP in test interpretation, interpreting
internal processes, noticing behavioral sequences, focusing on the processes of communication
instead of the content, and educating how to learn and not just what to learn. Stanton (1998)
has reported single session success with treating extreme examination anxiety with a
combination of hypnosis and NLP. Helm (1994) has suggested the use of NLP for school
administrators to use in establishing rapport with students, staff, and the community.

NLP can be used in classrooms to make use of different learning

modalities and strategies. It is important to discover each
student's combination of learning styles and talents to cater to it
while simultaneously encouraging the development of all
potential abilities (Dryden & Vos, 1999). Helm (1989, 1991) has
proposed dividing classes into preferred learning modality
sections. Using the eye calibration of modality techniques
presented by Bandler & Grinder (1979) it has been found that 80
percent of the population is normally organized with looking up
and to their left for visual remembered, left and middle for
auditory, and down to their right for kinesthetic. The rest of the
population is known as reversed organized and follow the
reverse pattern. Classroom application of this is when presenting
in front of a class stand to the left of the students when
presenting intellectually oriented information to speak to the student's right ear and left brain;
and stand to the right if your presentation involves right brain information and also to enhance
auditory learning (Helm, 1989; James, 1996). Generally for visual modality students, information
should be written up and to their left, auditory students should have information presented to
their middle left, kinesthetic students should have information presented to them down and to
their right (Bandler & Grinder, 1979). Modification to the general pattern can be made for
individual variations.

Conclusion *
Neuro-Linguistic Programming has demonstrated an excellent potential for improving
educational approaches. The positive and practical viewpoint of NLP makes it a desirable
framework from which to approach educational activities. Although NLP is still a very young
approach it has had a powerful impact in its short life. Researchers outside the NLP community
continue to validate the wisdom of the basic concepts of the theory, such as auditory, visual, and
kinesthetic learning styles. Further research needs to be conducted to validate the more
controversial views of NLP such as its view of learning disabilities and NLP interventions for
changing these ineffective learning strategies. NLP provides the tools and techniques with which
educational excellence can be achieved and maintained.

NLP in the Classroom

Learning is defined as the process of obtaining

knowledge. In order to obtain knowledge, we have
to process information, and NLP deals specifically
with the various ways in which we do that. The
‘representational systems’ of NLP – that is, the
way the mind processes and stores information –
broadly correspond to the main learning styles
identified by the theory of multiple intelligences,
so the transfer of NLP to the classroom is actually
quite logical. NLP gives teachers an additional tool
with which to identify the learning styles of their students, and helps them to understand how
the language and materials they use can influence students. This enables them to develop
clearer communication techniques which ensure that each type of learner has the best possible
opportunity to take in information. Today’s multimedia classroom, with tools such as the
interactive whiteboard, provides an environment conducive to every learning style as it actively
encourages use of all three senses.

“The benefits of understanding and utilizing sensory-based learning and representational

systems in the classroom will change the face of education. The knowledge of NLP allows the
teacher to have an amazing set of tools to get the best out of their class.”

Teachers using music to create atmosphere and stimulate creativity, or using mime and drama
techniques to build confidence and add body language to speech acts are already drawing from
the NLP repertoire. Only recently, however, have classroom activities specifically and overtly
based on NLP been developed by ELT practitioners.

“By understanding NLP, teachers can build on the tools available to them by structuring lessons
so that they work for all students and help them to develop their ability to learn from various
stimuli at an early age. This allows students to develop a well-rounded representational system
which will stand them in good stead later in life.”

NLP learning strategies

NLP techniques shift the focus from simply memorizing information to

using and developing fundamental sensory processes. A simple
example of this is teaching spelling: rather than just learning how to
spell a word using a conventional mnemonic technique, the student is
encouraged to look at the word from right to left as well as left to
right. This takes the focus off the words themselves and places it on
the process of learning instead, allowing the student to understand
rather than just remember how the word is spelt.

This method is shown to give students more confidence in their ability

to learn, which in turn generates better results.
Visualization and Metaphors

These NLP techniques give teachers an alternative way of handling

situations. The technique of visualization is widely used by sports
psychologists to improve athletic performance, but it is equally
useful as a tool to help achieve specific learning outcomes; the use
of metaphors encourages pupils to think differently.

Both techniques are a powerful means of providing positive

messages which can change a student’s mind-set, so they can be
very useful way of replacing limiting beliefs, engendered by lack of
confidence or external factors such as bullying, with positive
messages and suggestions.

Reframing (Changing States)

Reframing is an NLP technique which develops ownership,

empowerment and flexibility in behaviour. In its most basic
form it could change a negative idea like, “It’s horrible when it
rains as I can’t play football at lunchtime,” into a positive one
such as, “When it rains it means I can make the most of the
indoor equipment and play volleyball with my friends in the
hall.”

Anchors (Creating Positive States)

Anchoring is one of NLP’s most powerful techniques which can be used for any number of states
and contexts. It works by focusing on an external trigger which elicits a positive emotional
response. So, if a child is in a situation where they need to change their emotional state,
anchoring can quickly access the required emotion. For example, a pupil who suffers from exam
nerves can use an anchor to replace their fear with calm. Teachers too can utilize this technique
in the presentation of learning material, introducing key words or other stimuli when students
are at their most receptive to create an anchor that, consciously or subconsciously, will aid
students’ subsequent recall of the material.

The language we use in school needs to resonate with everyone. How we communicate and the
specific language we use is a key element of NLP, one which can be applied both in conventional
teaching but which also works brilliantly with the new technology now available to teachers.

Creating Rapport

Rapport is the sense of ease that develops when people

are interacting with others they feel comfortable with, and
is essential for meaningful communication to take place.
Rapport is most likely when like-minded people interact. In
the classroom, mingle and 'getting to know you' activities,
as well as continuous negotiation between teacher and
students foster rapport, while communication gap activities and group work reinforce it.
Mirroring

One way of establishing good rapport is to mirror the

behaviour of those we wish to influence or to be influenced
by. Mirroring of posture, gestures, facial expressions and
even breathing can easily be practiced in the classroom,
while simple drilling achieves the same results with
phonological features of connected speech and key lexical
phrases. To achieve natural communication, verbal and
non-verbal aspects need to be combined in communicative
activities. Learners may be asked to mirror the behaviour of characters on television before
mirroring each other and the teacher.

Maintaining flow

NLP fits in nicely with, the notion that learning flows like water and that the best learning takes
place when uninterrupted. For the purposes of lesson planning, flow is achieved when there is a
balance of skills development and new challenges, clear task goals and the need for
concentration. Successful learning takes place when learners feel a sense of control over what is
happening in the classroom, do not feel self-conscious, and receive positive feedback from each
other and the teacher. In good lessons, time seems to pass quickly. There are clear messages
here about balance of activities, interest, attitude to errors, confidence building, learner training
and autonomy. Competitive and collaborative games, jokes, songs and anecdotes,
personalization and well-structured information gap activities all help to maintain flow.

Pacing and Leading

A set of strategies requiring the listener to 'tune in', accept and correctly state the speaker's
point of view (pacing) before suggesting an alternative point of view (leading). Acceptance of an
argument will be accompanied by the listener's mirroring of the speaker's behaviour. Activities
involving listening without response, turn-taking, planning and decision-making are useful for
raising awareness of this process.

How can teachers use NLP techniques to help students learn better?

 Use anchoring technique to Increase motivation and achieve goals by recognizing success
and putting it in the future and experiencing it.
 Flexibility in your own behaviour so you can respond to any situation effectively and have
more choices.
 Be able to manage issues – be in the other person’s shoe (student’s shoe) to understand
their thinking process
 Be able to help students view failure differently and how to be in a win-win situation.
 Understand the learning processes of your students so they can improve performance
and raise attainment levels.
 Modelling techniques – Allow children to share how they do things so that they can
model each other.
 Accept that there is a positive intention for every behaviour and separate the behaviour
from the child.(which is usually caused by fear) and uncover hidden gifts.
