NLP – Neuro Linguistic Programming & Education *
The overall goal of NLP applied to education is to provide a
basic framework that is aligned with the empirical experience
of learning and training situations for the purpose of improving
the effectiveness and speed with which goal oriented learning
can take place (Dilts & Epstein, 1995). NLP relates words,
thoughts, and behaviors to goals and purposes by focusing on
effective communication with tools for taking perspectives on
issues (Craft, 2001).
Dilts & Epstein (1995) suggest the following areas are covered by the application of NLP to
education:
Basic principles of learning
Fundamental Neuro-linguistic processes involved in learning
Dynamic assessment and self-assessment processes
Levels of learning and learning strategies
Interactive learning and cooperative learning processes
Types of skills and learning styles Learning tools and teaching tools
NLP applications in education provide fundamental tools and strategies to help people to
update, acquire, filter, and retain new information as a constant, ongoing process (James, 1996).
The basic applications of NLP to education revolve around the principles of dynamic learning
(Dilts & Epstein, 1995). Dynamic learning is about learning through experience. The process of
dynamic learning involves learning by doing, exploring different methods of thinking, and
acknowledges that the relationships between people are a key factor in learning (Dilts & Epstein,
1995). Dynamic learning tools emphasize the skills of cooperative learning, co-coaching, and
mentoring.
Dilts & Epstein (1995) list the following outcomes of application of NLP to education:
Identifying and enriching personal strengths
Enhancing memory and imagination
Developing optimal learning states and strategies
Dealing with resistances to learning
Establishing beliefs that support learning
Identify and reframe limiting beliefs relating to learning
Management of multi-level learning interventions
Transforming perceived failures into positive feedback
Exploring interactive learning processes
NLP Applied in Schools *
Helm (1989,1991) has proposed that classes and possibly entire schools be established for
singular learning modalities so the modality strength of the individual can be optimally
enhanced. Rawlins & Eberly (1991) have suggested using NLP in test interpretation, interpreting
internal processes, noticing behavioral sequences, focusing on the processes of communication
instead of the content, and educating how to learn and not just what to learn. Stanton (1998)
has reported single session success with treating extreme examination anxiety with a
combination of hypnosis and NLP. Helm (1994) has suggested the use of NLP for school
administrators to use in establishing rapport with students, staff, and the community.
Conclusion *
Neuro-Linguistic Programming has demonstrated an excellent potential for improving
educational approaches. The positive and practical viewpoint of NLP makes it a desirable
framework from which to approach educational activities. Although NLP is still a very young
approach it has had a powerful impact in its short life. Researchers outside the NLP community
continue to validate the wisdom of the basic concepts of the theory, such as auditory, visual, and
kinesthetic learning styles. Further research needs to be conducted to validate the more
controversial views of NLP such as its view of learning disabilities and NLP interventions for
changing these ineffective learning strategies. NLP provides the tools and techniques with which
educational excellence can be achieved and maintained.

NLP in the Classroom
Teachers using music to create atmosphere and stimulate creativity, or using mime and drama
techniques to build confidence and add body language to speech acts are already drawing from
the NLP repertoire. Only recently, however, have classroom activities specifically and overtly
based on NLP been developed by ELT practitioners.
“By understanding NLP, teachers can build on the tools available to them by structuring lessons
so that they work for all students and help them to develop their ability to learn from various
stimuli at an early age. This allows students to develop a well-rounded representational system
which will stand them in good stead later in life.”
Anchoring is one of NLP’s most powerful techniques which can be used for any number of states
and contexts. It works by focusing on an external trigger which elicits a positive emotional
response. So, if a child is in a situation where they need to change their emotional state,
anchoring can quickly access the required emotion. For example, a pupil who suffers from exam
nerves can use an anchor to replace their fear with calm. Teachers too can utilize this technique
in the presentation of learning material, introducing key words or other stimuli when students
are at their most receptive to create an anchor that, consciously or subconsciously, will aid
students’ subsequent recall of the material.
The language we use in school needs to resonate with everyone. How we communicate and the
specific language we use is a key element of NLP, one which can be applied both in conventional
teaching but which also works brilliantly with the new technology now available to teachers.
Creating Rapport
Maintaining flow
NLP fits in nicely with, the notion that learning flows like water and that the best learning takes
place when uninterrupted. For the purposes of lesson planning, flow is achieved when there is a
balance of skills development and new challenges, clear task goals and the need for
concentration. Successful learning takes place when learners feel a sense of control over what is
happening in the classroom, do not feel self-conscious, and receive positive feedback from each
other and the teacher. In good lessons, time seems to pass quickly. There are clear messages
here about balance of activities, interest, attitude to errors, confidence building, learner training
and autonomy. Competitive and collaborative games, jokes, songs and anecdotes,
personalization and well-structured information gap activities all help to maintain flow.
A set of strategies requiring the listener to 'tune in', accept and correctly state the speaker's
point of view (pacing) before suggesting an alternative point of view (leading). Acceptance of an
argument will be accompanied by the listener's mirroring of the speaker's behaviour. Activities
involving listening without response, turn-taking, planning and decision-making are useful for
raising awareness of this process.
How can teachers use NLP techniques to help students learn better?
Use anchoring technique to Increase motivation and achieve goals by recognizing success
and putting it in the future and experiencing it.
Flexibility in your own behaviour so you can respond to any situation effectively and have
more choices.
Be able to manage issues – be in the other person’s shoe (student’s shoe) to understand
their thinking process
Be able to help students view failure differently and how to be in a win-win situation.
Understand the learning processes of your students so they can improve performance
and raise attainment levels.
Modelling techniques – Allow children to share how they do things so that they can
model each other.
Accept that there is a positive intention for every behaviour and separate the behaviour
from the child.(which is usually caused by fear) and uncover hidden gifts.
LIFE SKILLS FOR STUDENTS
LIFE SKILLS FOR STUDENTS
Our program is designed in 4 modules that cover different techniques of NLP and its application
for the holistic development of student.
These modules can be customized from 2- 3 days for students class VI and above.
1. Module One – Students shall understand their learning styles and their preferred modes
of learning & understanding. Working on VAKOG dimension.
2. Module Two – Dreams & Goals in Life. Through visual art forms, students shall discover
their dream and NLP based Outcome Thinking Model.
3. Module Three – Managing emotional state of mind and achieving desired state through
application of techniques like ‘Circle of Excellence’ to adapt to challenging situations,
examinations and performance pressures.
4. Module Four – How to enhance their retention spans and increase concentration
through Mind & Body Relaxation activities which they can implement in their daily life.
We also run special 2/4 days’ camp (2days, 1 night or 4 days, 3 nights) for the kids of the age
group between 10 – 18 years of batch size 40 with NLP. Where topics covered are
Besides the above we can customize the workshop based on School, Teachers and Parents
