The following Instructional Pack and its accompanying media has been created and compiled by
Bugler Chris Mace RM with the assistance of Lt. Cdr. (SCC) Derek Payne RNR.
The main aim is to improve the quality of the SCC Massed Bands by providing a comprehensive
resource for the learning of new repertoire, standardising existing repertoire and ensuring
consistency in all areas.
By combining written instructions, sheet music, visual and audio aids, it is hoped that everyone will
be able to use this pack, from junior cadets to national band staff. And if anything is still unclear
then we encourage everyone to ask using the chain of command. At no stage should anything be
made up. Whether you are a cadet or an Area Staff Officer, if in any doubt, ASK. This really is the
only way the quality of the SCC Massed Bands can improve.
The list of repertoire in this pack is not, by any means, exhaustive but will become the standard
repertoire for all SCC Massed Bands engagements. It is therefore imperative that all concerned
learn the parts exactly as they appear here. Many of the older, traditional pieces have morphed over
the years away from the correct parts and, in most cases, this pack will ensure a return to the
original score. Similarly, it is up to everyone to make sure that any new pieces are learnt accurately
to ensure that we achieve the aim of consistency across the board.

The Massed Bands of the Sea Cadet Corps
Parade Instructions
The following are generic instructions for Massed Bands parades. They refer to traditional
parades rather than rehearsed arena displays or Beating Retreat ceremonies. Most
instructions can and should be applied at unit band level. They do not replace any existing
published orders or instructions but should be used in conjunction with these, as a more
specific guide for the band’s involvement.
The Parade Instructions will be split into the following composite sections of a typical parade:
These sections are not exhaustive, may or may not be used on any specific parade and may
not necessarily be in the order stated. For example, at the annual National SCC Trafalgar Sunday
Parade at Trafalgar Square, the ‘March-Around’ section is relevant to the march to Trafalgar Square
as well as the march back down the mall after the parade. The ‘Receiving an Inspecting Officer’,
‘The Inspection’ and ‘The March Past’ sections are all relevant for the parade itself but on this
occasion there is no ‘Advance in Review Order’. Similarly at the Lord Mayor’s Show, the only
relevant section would be ‘The March-Around’.
• Firstly, on hearing ‘VIP Approaching’, ‘Flag Sir’ or any other predetermined alert from the
parade staff, a bugler from the band will play the ‘Alert’.
• The guard will then slope arms and, as the VIP approaches the saluting platform, the Drum
Major will give the command ‘Band Ready’.
• When the VIP is on the saluting platform, the guard will present arms. On the completion of
their drill movement, the Director of Music (DoM) will conduct the musical salute. The
Drum Major salutes with the general salute.
• The DoM then about turns and salutes.
• The guard will then slope arms. On their first movement, the centre bass drummer gives the
‘click-click-down’ signal with two beaters above the bass drum. The Drum Major and DoM
both return to the position of attention.
• Care should be taken to always use the correct musical salute for the VIP concerned. For
example, Her Majesty the Queen would be given one full verse of the National Anthem,
whereas a local mayor would be given the ‘Drum Ruffle’. See Appendix I for a full list of
musical salutes.
2. The Inspection
Incidental Music
• During the Inspection of the guard and the divisions, the band will probably be required to
play incidental music. There are no real criteria at this point as to what is to be played. Slow
marches, set pieces, ‘funnies’ etc. are all acceptable.
Drill
• If the DoM is not already in an offset position at the front of the band, they should take up
this position.
• Once the Divisions have been stood at ease (if necessary) and the Inspecting Officer has
begun inspecting the guard, the Drum Major will give the order ‘Band, Stand at Ease’. The
DoM can then walk through the band and tell them which piece he wishes them to play.
• When the DoM returns to the front of the band he will instruct the Drum Major to bring the
band up. The Drum Major will give the orders, ‘Band, Tun!’, ‘Band, Ready’
• The DoM will then conduct the piece.
• To finish the piece, the DoM will point at the bass drummer at the appropriate point and a
double bass drum beat will be played. The band then cut off with the DoM.
• The Drum Major will then give the order ‘Band, Stand at Ease’. The DoM can then walk
through the band and tell them which piece he wishes to play next. At this point the previous
routine will be followed again and repeated for as long as necessary.
• Before the Inspecting Officer approaches the band, it is the DoM’s responsibility to cut off
the band.
• The Band will remain at attention.
• The DoM will march up to meet the Inspecting Officer as they approach, halt a few paces
before them and report.
• The DoM will then lead the Inspecting Officer down the front rank of the band. This is the
only rank to be inspected.
• On completion the DoM asks permission to carry on and returns to his position at the front
of the band.
• The Drum Major can now give the order, ‘Band, Stand at Ease’
• Other than the ‘Band, Ready’, all other orders will come from the Parade/Guard
Commander.
• Unless on an exclusively ‘Marine Cadet’ parade (when ‘British Grenadiers’ should be used)
the Royal Navy Advance in Review Order, ‘Nancy Lee’ should be played.
• The band advance, playing, with the guard. The DoM marches in his position at the front of
the band.
• On the last beat a ‘pussers’ halt is executed with the guard (rather than a ‘musical’ halt). The
DoM about turns.
• The guard will give a general salute and the band will then play the appropriate musical
salute, conducted by the DoM.
• Again the ‘click-click down’ is given at the order ‘slope arms’
4. The March Past
• If not already in a suitable position, the band will position itself so that it is opposite the
saluting platform with enough space for the guard and divisions to pass between the band
and the platform.
• The Parade will be stepped off by the Parade/Guard Commander. The Band will remain at
the halt and play ‘Heart of Oak’ whilst the guard march past.
• The DoM will then give the cut off and rolls will be played into the next march. If more than
one further march is required, drum solos will be played in between each march.
• Once all the divisions have marched past, the DoM will cut off the band, conduct the first of
the three beat rolls and then place his baton under his arm on the first beat of the second.
This is the instruction to the band that they should now step off playing ‘Ready Aye Ready’.
• The band will wheel the opposite way to the divisions marching past and then, once clear of
the saluting platform, counter-march to follow them. The Drum Major and DoM will salute
the Inspecting Officer as they pass the platform.
5. The March-Around
Order of Music
• The order of the marches to be played will be decided by the senior Director of
Music/Bandmaster prior to the parade and will be relayed to the Massed Bands in the talk-
through at the venue. During this talk-through, musicians will arrange their march cards into
the appropriate order.
• A senior/reliable musician in the trombone rank will be asked to shout out the next march in
the gap between the first and second three beat roll of each piece.
• On a march-around where more than two marches will be necessary, drum solos will be
played between every march.
• If there will be a saluting platform along the route somewhere, the March Past of the Sea
Cadet Corps, ‘Ready Aye Ready’ should be played on passing it. This may be followed by
‘Heart of Oak’ and ‘A Life on the Ocean Wave’ at the discretion of the DoM. All
instructions for the execution of this should be explained at the talk-through prior to
stepping off.
Parade Orders
• Orders may come from the Parade Staff or the Drum Major. The Band should only act if the
words ‘Band’ or ‘Parade’ precede the order.
• Often, the step-off will be given by the Parade/Guard Commander. When the guard are at
the slope and are given the order to turn in the direction they are to be marching, the Drum
Major will give the order ‘Band, Ready’. The Drum Major should remind the band to work
off the Parade/Guard Commander’s order and about turn. The Band then step off on hearing
this order.
• The Drum Major will normally give all further orders to the band during the march-around.
At all times, if the band are playing, the orders will be given through a combination of
staff movements and bass drum beats. If the band are not playing, the Drum Major
will give the orders verbally.
• The Band should be prepared to be given ‘Halt’ and ‘Advance whilst playing’ signals from
the Drum Major throughout the march-around, particularly if there are other contingents
ahead of the band.
• The Cease Playing - The Drum Major will be responsible for all ‘cease playing’ signals
throughout the parade. It is, therefore, the Drum Major’s responsibility to cut off all
marches with his staff and all drum solos with his arm. At no point should the band
automatically finish at the end of a march. If the Drum Major does not give a ‘cease
playing’ signal, the band should return to the top of the march and keep playing until the
signal is given. On receiving the signal and finishing the march, the drummers should
automatically go straight into rolls for the next piece.
• The Final Cease Playing – If the Drum Major wants the band to finish playing altogether,
the normal ‘cease playing’ staff signal will be given, but in addition, the left hand will be
waived behind the back. This is the signal for the drummers that they should not proceed
into rolls when the staff is dropped and the current piece finishes.
• The Corps of Drums will normally be formed up with ‘combination’ players (i.e. those that
play both drum and bugle) at the front.
• During bugle marches, these combination players will play the bugle parts and the rear
rank(s) of drummers will play the drum part. Drum parts to bugle marches will be played
without stick work except where all the Corps of Drums are drumming together (i.e. if the
entire Corps of Drums are incapable of doing stick work because some of them are on
bugles, the remaining drummers play down).
• Bringing bugles up - During the two three beat rolls leading into a bugle march,
combination players will bring sticks down on the first beat of the first roll, come over to
bugles on the last beat of the first roll and bring bugles up in one on the first beat of the
second roll. Buglers not carrying drums will also come up in one at this point. The only
exception to this will be when the march that the parade steps off to is a bugle march when
bugles will be brought to ‘the ready’ with the rest of the band prior to stepping off. If bugles
are brought up during a march, they will be brought up in two as usual.
• Bringing bugles down – At all times, bugles will be brought down in two movements. For
combination players, if bugles are being played right up to the cease playing signal, bugles
will be brought down and sticks brought up over the two three beat rolls leading into the
next march.
• On completion of a march, the Corps of Drums will go into drum solos. Musicians, Bell
Lyres and Bugles should all come down on the second three beat roll. Bell Lyres and Bugles
will swing on the first beat of the solos but musicians have the first eight bars to change
their march cards (at the down position). Arms should be cut on the eigth bar and swung on
the ninth.
• Arms should be swung to waistband height.
• On completion of drum solos, the Corps of Drums will play the two three beat rolls into the
next march. Right arms are cut away on the last beat of the first roll and instruments brought
to ‘the ready’ on the first beat of the second roll.

IMPORTANT
Please look at the parts in this pack for all of these pieces. Some existing repertoire
may be arranged slightly differently to what is presently being played. It is very
important that everyone concerned learn the various parts exactly as they appear in
this pack.
Performance Notes
All marches will be played until the ‘cease playing’ is given by the Drum Major (or
the DoM). On reaching the end of the march, if no signal has been given, repeat back
to the very start of the march (with the exception of ‘Heart of Oak’ where the
introduction is omitted after it’s first playing). To illustrate this point, on the
accompanying CD and DVD, the regimental marches and drum solos are all played
twice through.
All marches are written in the correct/original key with the exception of ‘Sarie
Marais’ (to coincide with simplified band arrangement).
The trio of ‘Ready Aye Ready’ is not usually played. The Drum part to this march has
been adapted for the Corps of Drums (it is standard practice even in RM Bands to
adapt the original percussion parts in this way).
In some instances the 2nd Bell Lyre part may be omitted if accompanied by a full
band.

Audio CD Playlists
This CD has been recorded one instrument at a time and then layered. Therefore, at times, the parts
are not perfectly in time with each other and there is a lack of the musicality that an ensemble
playing together could achieve. Please use this disc as a guide rather than an exact example of how
pieces are to be played.
The following two CDs break the pieces down into their composite parts. They are all electronic
‘midi’ recordings and so, whilst accurate, there is a lack of musicality and phrasing that should be
applied once the parts are learnt. Rests are played out in full and so there may be substantial periods
of silence within certain tracks, including at the beginning of some.

This DVD adds the visual component to CD 1. All stick drill should be followed exactly as shown
here, even if it differs from parts that are already known to ensure consistency across the Corps.
Stick drill for ‘Ready Aye Ready’, ‘The Huntsmen’s Chorus’ and ‘Youth in Blue’ are shown for
interest only as, usually, the majority of the Corps of Drums will be playing bugles and so any
remaining drummers will play the march down (as previously mentioned).
The ‘Drill’ section of the DVD is broken down into Drum Major Drill, MSD Drill, Bugle Drill and
Bell Lyre Drill.

• The Military Side Drum part is not the original. It has been adapted
to be more suitable for stick-work and more repetitive to make it
easier to remember. This adaptation of original snare drum parts is
common practice in RM Bands for these reasons.
• On reaching the end of the piece (as shown in these parts without
the trio), if no cease playing signal has been given, return to the
very beginning.

Heart of Oak
• On reaching the end of the piece, if no cease playing signal has
been given, return to Bar 9 with the anacrusis (i.e. back to the tune
after the introduction).
• If the cease playing signal is given at Bar 35, on reaching Bar 37,
jump straight to Bar 51 to play the longer ending. Likewise, if it is
pre-arranged that the ‘short version’ of Heart of Oak is to played,
again jump from Bar 37 to Bar 51 and complete the piece from
there.
• The Bell Lyre parts are written for A-A instruments. C-C
instruments should play the Bell Lyre I part only and put Bars 31-
34 and Bars 45-48 up the octave.

been given, return to Bar 9 with the anacrusis (i.e. the tune after the
introduction).
• The Corps of Drums should note that the last two bars of EVERY
eight bar phrase are played down with the exception of the very
last two bars of the piece after the cease playing has been given. At
this point Bars 47 and 48 (for the second time) should be played
UP regardless of which eight bar phrase is being played at the time.
• The Bell Lyre part can be played by both A-A and C-C
instruments.
